I think Matfield has put all doubts about his abilities to rest with that stellar performance tonight. The Chiefs only managed a draw after he left the field.

Definitely a contender for the Boks squad this year and the RWC 2015.

Hearing that he missed a fair few tackles has me swaying the other way, squad maybe but not on the team sheet. Much rather Flip starting and someone else on the bench!

meyers track record of selecting the players from the bulls and Boks yesteryear, plus matfileds performance to date, especially in the lineouts where he has regained his status as the king, its a safe bet to say he will be playing for the Boks in 2014.
IMO lineout is the only place where hes been a standout, between the cheetahs 2nd row, flip and lady elizabeth though, theres no reason based on merit to include matfield to the Boks, not yet anyways.
i would like to see him back though, whitelock and retallick would have their work cut out for them lineout wise when baron von viktor is around.

He has proven he can still perform well in the line out & recieve kicks well. Plus he has leadership qualities but if this is enough to be a bok only time will tell. It will also depend on how the young guys develop.

Lol Beeno, yes we would like to see all of your "golden oldies" in the bok team. It is like music to our ears. Matfield has so much to give (kiwis).

In addition to proving he is still the best lineout forward in the world, Matfield is also very effective at the kicks offs. These are core functions of a numbrer5 lock.
Matfield's organisation of the lineouts, will also make it easier for the Boks to launch their best attacking weapon- the driving maul which often result in penalties and tries. (in 2013 this was a major problem for the boks, where the lineouts and kick offs were the worst ever, and this impacted on the ability to get the driving mauls started). The boks scored more tries by their backs in years, which was positive.
In 2013, most balls were thrown to the front of the lineout, where it is hard to get a driving maul going, especially when the opposition is expecting it to got to the front of the lineout.
Matfield also has a decent tackle count and is still fast around the park and must still be very fit.
He must however get out of the backline on attack where he is a waist of space.

He is an average scrumager, but then he never has been very good in this area.
With Frans Steyn on the pitch combined with Matfield at the lineout, South Africa can beat any team at the territorial game. When a team has a good kicking game and is dominating the lineouts, they are hard to beat- as the Sharks found out last week.
Players like Fourie Dupreez and Matfield are like having coaches on the field. They understand what Meyer wants and this counts in their favour.
South Africa just needs to win the scrums, lineouts and mauls and have a good kicking game, then we have a good chance of beating all teams. The end of year tour last year showed the potential of the Boks, and with Matfield in the team I am sure that we will be even stronger.
Teams are probably scared to kick the ball out with Matfield and Frans Steyn the team because every one of them is a chance to setup a driving maul, and from this a good chance of the Boks making lots of territory and maybe getting a penalty. Frans Steyn will just step up and bang them over from 60 metres out.
