Well, he should be back in the Bok team any time now, he must be in shape. Clevermike, Beeno and Saffex will be overjoyed. Well not really but perhaps Moz will, and all kiwis of course, lol

We live in hope ForeverAZ, lol
It amazes me that there is so much controversy over the selections of the Bok players, this is not the case with the ABs. I think the main reason is we bring new players in slowly and integrate them. The Boks are making more major changes as they are also trying to change the style of rugby + integrate old and new.

I am a Bulls fan and I can't fathom why either the Bulls or the Boks would possibly want Matfield. Even the last 3-4 years of his career he was lazy and pretty worthless. Stupid notion!

Especially considering the Bulls have some depth at lock in Flip, Willemse, Jacques du Plessis, David Bulbring, Dennis Visser, Grant Hatingh and Ernst Herbst

For the Boks, we have locks to burn.....the list of quality depth is endless

Matfield was way past his best by the time he retired, although he was still the best line-out forward in the world and was solid at kickoffs.
Their was a time when Matfield used to to chase possession like a loose forward and was highly mobile.
A past it Matfield would have been better than Juandre Kruger who was pathetic in the line-outs and kick off's in 2013.
The line-outs were so bad for much of the time that Juandre played, that the boks lost the ability to create driving mauls from line-outs our key attacking weapon.
It is probably the first time I have ever seen an All Black line-out truly better than the Boks line-out.
For years I have watched the All Blacks do quick sneaky throws in the line-out , like the hooker pretending to pick his nose or look at the referee and then just quickly throw the ball.

David Bulring, Lood de Jager, Ligtoring somebody else.....hahahahahahahaha. Victor could still play these guys with his hands tied behind his back....despite months on the Atkins diet, red meat, the only respectable diet for a rugby forward!

Lets just hope Meyer wakes up to Lood this year instead of this pathetic investment in 34 year old Bakkies and 36 year old Matfield........its a joke

No Dave, Quinn is the man. He has some....er maybe a game or two....NH experience. Lood still thinks Paris is on the Vaal not the Seine. And lets not forget CJ Stander when it comes to loosies. The way that guy approaches bench play is just awesome!

Yep if Meyer had any insight he would have CJ Stander on board but the man is too conservative and only sees what's in front of him or is stuck in a time warp involving players like Kirchner, Aplon, Fourie, Jean, Morne, du Preez, Pienaar, Steenkamp, CJ v/d Linde, Heinke v/d Merwe, Bakkies and shortly Matfield, Schalk, Juan and Spies.......it is all looking a little silly.

As for Quinn ahead of Lood.......no, Lood should be our bench lock.........but the aggressive 125kg Quinn would have been a handy enforcer for the Stormers........far better than the pretender Steenkamp........and Coetzee wonders why his Stormers fared so poorly?

Mostly I'd say they fared poorly last year because Coetzee made poor calls in recruiting Jantjies and Taute, because Etzebeth was lost for the first half of the S15, and because they played the utterly useless Louis Schreuder at scrum half.

There was one thing Matfield was good in years ago it was line out jumping.   for the rest he was no good in tight phases of play - preferring to moonlight amongst the backs and frustrating the backline players many times.

Joe good is he still.  Always a lightweight lock - his playing weight was 107 kgs - it I doubtful whether he would survive in the present era where the locks are  routinely as tall as him - but 10 to 12 kgs heavier.   He is likely to be outmuscled with considerable ease and stay in the backline where he can do a lot of damage to backline play.

If he does play in Super 15 - we would soon see whether he will be worth it.   I do not think he would meet requirements at all.   he younger fitter and mire athletic players will play the fool with him.

The Stormers was poor last year because of two players - Jantjies and De Jongh,   Jantjies was a liability in all components of the game - De Jongh in defence.

Taute virtually never played and he had no impact on any game - since he had virtually no playing time bcause of the Jantjies fiasco and injury.

Ah yeah Taute, the guy who hardly played and happens to be a Bok.......good one.

Useless Coetzee did not know how to play Jantjies, having him lie deep, when his forte is lying flat and asking questions of the defences as he did on his return to the Lions.

Coetzee cocked up by having no grunt in his pack thanks to Steenkamp at lock, playing a lightweight hooker in Scara and Fourie, a lightweight tighthead in Cilliers and cocking up the loosetrio balance.

He completely cocked the backs up by ignoring the talents of de Allende, v/d Heever, Pat Howard and Tim Swiel.......imagine selecting de Jongh, v/Aswegen and Coleman ahead of these guys

This is why Coetzee failed......he is a very poor coach who has a gift for overlooking talented players

 Saffex

At times you see non-existent things.   When Jantjies was playing for the Lions he was lying deeper in the pocket than even Morne Steyn.   Coetzee did not tell him to do that - it was the way he played over the pat two years.   If you did not see that - you must have been blinded by prejudice.

I do not expect Jantjies will last long in Super 15 as the Lions flyhalf - he will be placed on the bench sooner than you think.    He is bloody useless.

However, I agree with you about the rest of your comments about Coetzee cocking up selections and there will be no difference this year.

Incidentally - Jantjies showed squat on his return ti the Lions.   He was so bad in the dirst game - he was put on the bench  and only played in later  games at flyhalf.  His only reasonable performances were kicking at goal - nothing else.

I am amazed you cannot se through the real va lue of Jantjies after two years of poor performances.

Thank heavens Victor did occasionaly moonlight among the backs ....when Mathew Tait went past Fransie as if he wasn't there a Pom try could have turned the RWC07 final. But Victor stopped him on the goal line.

I have spent countless nights watching Victor Matfield's games for both the Boks and the Bulls. His lineout proficiency remains unmatched in my opinion. Not only was he excepcionally good at providing quality line-out ball himself, but he also read the whole system like nobody else. He clearly studied his opponents' line-out to the core, to the point where it seemed as if he was calling the throws. He also understood that being the sole recipient come line-out time is not viable long term, so he often opted for alternatives to keep rivals confused.

He was not the enforcer-type of lock, that's quite obvious. His style was more befitting of an Australian lock, with great mobility and handling. Such style was at times detrimental to the Bok gameplan (always based on physicality and forward dominance), but back then the Boks had guys like Os du Randt, Bakkies Botha, Juan Smith, Schalk Burger, Danie Rossouw, Bismarck & Jannie du Plessis in the mix...

Similar criticism was thrown at Robbie Deans' selection of Pat McCabe (a tough, physical and solid, albeit a bit "limited" centre) in place of a playmaker-type centre, which somewhat hindered the Wallabies from fully exploiting the talent of their backline.

As for Matfield's return to SupeRugby, I am happy, yet still somewhat concerned. Happy because a player of his caliber is always a sight to behold, yet still concerned because the Bulls are -- in my opinion -- not getting their priorities right. One would think the Bulls, boasting such a infrastructure, would focus more on developing their young talent and giving them gametime to prove themselves. But maybe the Management want to do with him what Saracens did with John Smit. He was there to enjoy himself and in the meantime, bestow the youngsters around him with experience and the nous required to play this game.

Talking about locks, I really hope to see more of Jacques du Plessis. I believe he has serious potential.

Very nicely reasoned piece Ole. To me what Victor did so superbly was rapidly place the ball where the scrum half could best get his pass away. But it's interesting to  read your analysis of his tactical role and how he related to the Bok game plan. Like you I also have doubts about Victor coming back, two years is a long time to be away at any age, let alone your late thirties.

Spot on Ole, Jacques du Plessis looks a great prospect. He looks to be another Etzebeth and Steph du Toit.

He threw the javelin for SA at school level

Sadly the Bulls are currently wasting him at flank......he is far too big and tall for flank
