Once a fierce critic of the Springboks, former Scotland, Leinster, and Waratahs coach Matt Williams has shifted gears, now commending the South African team's evolution into a more dynamic playing style. Central to this transformation, according to Williams, is young fly-half Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, whose influence on the team's tactics has been pivotal.

In a recent DSPN podcast with Martin Devlin, Williams expressed his revised view on the Springboks, suggesting that their newfound flair on the field is largely thanks to Feinberg-Mngomezulu's prowess. "I’ve been praising South Africa for weeks, saying what a great side they are," Williams noted. However, he emphasized that his past criticisms were often overlooked in favor of his more positive comments. "They only hear the first part," he lamented.

"But if you happen to say they didn’t play attractive rugby in the last couple of World Cups, but now they are, they don’t listen to that second part!"

Williams highlighted the fly-half's comprehensive skill set as a game-changer for the team. "He is such a complete athlete. He is the real triple threat. He can pass, kick, and, unlike previous South African 10s, his individual running game is what sets him apart," Williams explained. He likened Feinberg-Mngomezulu's impact to rugby legends like Dan Carter and Richie Mo’unga, noting how these players not only excel individually but also elevate the entire team's performance.

The coach's praise didn't stop with the fly-half. He drew comparisons between the current Springboks and the legendary All Blacks teams of the past. "I think this South African team can, they’re getting close right now, a couple of years out from the World Cup, to challenge that (All Blacks) side, they are just so good," Williams asserted.

"Like when that New Zealand side was exactly what you said, they were two to three tries a better team than anyone on the planet."

Williams also commended the Springboks' ability to integrate traditional strengths with their new, expansive gameplay. "This South African side has got a great scrum, a maul that’ll put you in the car park, and a kicking game that’s superb," he said, emphasizing that their complete game makes them formidable opponents. "Their line-out, their maul, their scrum, their go-forward attack, and their defense is better than anyone on the planet. So that’s a frightening scenario."

As the Springboks continue to evolve, the influence of players like Feinberg-Mngomezulu and the strategic shifts by the coaching staff suggest that this team is not only challenging the norms of South African rugby but also setting a new standard on the international stage.
