***DAMMIT. I WAS LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING HOW JANE GOES!!***

Injuries continue to haunt veteran All Blacks Richie McCaw and Cory Jane, who have both been ruled out of the third Bledisloe Cup Test against Australia in Dunedin on Saturday.

Captain McCaw won't play his 121st Test and world record 32nd against the Wallabies after pulling up with a tight calf muscle late in training on Thursday.

He has been replaced by openside flanker Sam Cane, with Steven Luatua coming onto the reserve bench.

Keiran Read takes over the captaincy, resuming that role after leading New Zealand in five of their nine Tests this year.

Jane suffered a hamstring injury and is replaced on the right wing by Charles Piutau, who will make his first Test start after not being named on the bench initially.

It is a disappointing outcome for Jane, 30, who was poised to make his return to Test rugby following eight months of recuperation from a knee reconstruction.

McCaw, 32, has also been troubled by injury since returning from his six-month break from rugby.

After two reserve bench appearances for the Crusaders in Super Rugby, he has played just four Tests. He was unavailable for the June series against France, then a knee injury ruled him out of Tests against South Africa in Auckland and Argentina in La Plata.

It is understood 43-Test veteran Jane also suffered his injury at the Thursday training session.

His absence has the potential to be disruptive to an All Blacks backline already missing injured first five-eighth Dan Carter and centre Conrad Smith, who has begun a four-month break from rugby.

Piutau played every minute of the Blues' 16 Super Rugby games this year at fullback.

He has looked sharp coming off the bench in six Tests, including his debut against France in New Plymouth.

Coach Steve Hansen was to clarify the status of both injured players at a media session on Friday afternoon.

Hansen will announce a 36-strong squad on Sunday to play Tests in Japan and Europe in November.

All Blacks: Israel Dagg, Charles Piutau, Conrad Smith, Ma'a Nonu, Julian Savea, Aaron Cruden, Aaron Smith, Kieran Read (capt), Sam Cane, Liam Messam, Sam Whitelock, Jeremy Thrush, Charlie Faumuina, Keven Mealamu, Tony Woodcock. Reserves: Dane Coles, Wyatt Crockett, Ben Franks, Brodie Retallick, Steven Luatua, Tawera Kerr-Barlow, Beauden Barrett, Tom Taylor

If there is one certainty in rugby - it is that the older players become - the more likely it is that they get injured and the longer it takes for them to recover.   McCaw is 32 and shows the same tendency and Jane at 30 is also an example.

Take for instance the case of McCaw.   He went on his sabbatical and came back - being  well above his normal playing weight and played in two tests - where he did show that his main attribute was donation of penalties to the Wallabies.  He got injured in the third test.   Was it the effect of the sabbatical or was age a factor?   What is clear that his age and apparent lack of prime match fitness was a sure recipe for injury.   He came back for the Ellis Park test - but this time around he missed tackles like it was unbelievable - despite the AB supporters protestations to the contrary.   Was he really ready to play after his sabbatical and his previous injury?   I really don't think so - but the latest injury most likely has more to do with age than anything else.

I always rated Jane is a top wing - but he is also on the wrong side of 30 and he was out with an injury for nearly a year.   Come back and even before his first match - another injury problem.   Is it again the result of the effects of what I referred to in the first paragraph above?  Most likely - so we will have to wait and see what happens in future.

ABs will be just fine. Cane is a proven commodity;  Piutau has x-factor but is scary talented. With Smith moving to center there is increased risk for the outside backs but IMO the team will be fine.

Have no problem with the team - rather with the injury of older players issue - and that is a problem we have to face in all teams throughout the world.  I am a great admirer of cane in any event.

Good news imo Jane did not earn his way back in and was average in his two games for the Wellington Lions. Frank Halai should be there as he was in this years wider training group, and has been a standout in super rugby and the itm cup.

And the more minutes for Cane in games against the likes of Australia the better.

Last year I had front row seats that let me see Jane working up close ,and wow I mean anyone who can position themselves perfectly under the high ball under lights ,crowd screaming opposition thundering in for the kill  and make it look soooo easy deserves kudo's !

So carol jane and wee macaaaaw will be missing. Tough luck Oz as it would have helped having these guys in the wee ab side.
But Oz have there own injury problems. Just remember that the abs are there for the taking as the Boks demonstrated this year. Their luck will evaporate come 2014. However never write of the abs and their very supportive refs! Is that about to change given the widespread objections?

Jeebers wept you talk some tripe beaner .Is refs all you saffas think of ? Is it some sort of inferiority complex you guys have developed after countless beatings by the Darkness ? Do saffa daddys sit their kids on their knee and drum into them the " Boks never lose to other teams only to Referees " mantra?

Sorry warped dud until things change the world wide protests we saw will continue. Time the kiwis came clean. Until you do expect more of the same. We do of course expect bent and delusional kiwi bird brains to vigourously protest against any atte mpts to dismantle their ref system.
One senses a change of season - one can't dominate like we are doing against the wee abs and continue not getting the result.
From a ref point of view Nigel was a breath of fresh air and perhaps marks the begining of the end of the ref in pocket nz system. We shall see.
As I said Oz and SA need to get their houses in order, stand firm against the nz ref in pocket sytem and we shall see the abs at number 3 in the world - where they belong - unless its 4 as the poms could be getting a taste for hammering the wee abs? Hahhahahahahahahhahaha - can I plead with all rugby fans to get a good pair of ear muffs. No I am not referring to the bleats that are bound to arise as a consequence of this thoughtful post of mine but the extremely loud bang that is going to occur when the huge ab bubble bursts.

OPINION: Take a chill pill, people. Steve Hansen's got this, and there can be no doubt that he knows what he's doing.

Ben Smith at centre, Cory Jane back off just a game and a bit to start on the right wing and Jeremy Thrush getting a deserved shot in the second row . . . these are all good things for All Blacks rugby.

There are no negatives when you're 9-0 for the year, you've swept France without breaking a sweat, sashayed through a second straight Rugby Championship without dropping a test and just won the game of the decade at Ellis Park when you had every excuse not to.

In fact, the only thing more impressive than the All Blacks' form at the moment, is their unprecedented depth. And that's just about to get even better.

The longer this dream run of the All Blacks under Hansen continues, seemingly the more depth they are building. There's a lot to be said right now for the theory that the only team capable of beating New Zealand is New Zealand.

Since Hansen took the reins following the epic, but painstaking, World Cup victory on Eden Park, the All Blacks have won 21 of their 23 test matches, with the 18-18 draw in Brisbane last year and the season-ending defeat to England at Twickenham the only blots on the copybook.

That's some record.

But even more remarkable are the options now available to the big cheese at the selection table.

Dan Carter goes down, Richie McCaw too. No biggie. Jane misses the entire year till now. So? Even old reliable Owen Franks tweaks a groin and up steps the next option.

Life goes on, and so does the test win tally.

This is the All Blacks circa 2013, where no player is irreplaceable - well, maybe Kieran Read, but we won't go there - and where the show rolls on seemingly regardless of the personnel.

Work through the All Blacks and there's not many, if any, positions where you wouldn't feel comfortable with option No 2 stepping up. At hooker there's still a reliance on a couple of old soldiers, but, geez, they're still so good it's stretching it to call it a problem position.

Wyatt Crockett is a perfectly able deputy on the loosehead, and at tighthead they're queuing up for a chance. At lock, once Luke Romano and Dom Bird are fit again, the cupboard's full; and in the loose, well, let's just say the emergence of Sam Cane and return of Jerome Kaino create an embarrassment of riches.

Same at halfback, same at five eighth. And same in the back three where unless you're world class you can forget about getting near an All Blacks squad. A fit-again Jane is going to leave some big calls to be made next year.

Midfield is probably the only truly skinny area, but, hey, that's where this week comes in. Suddenly Ben Smith becomes a viable option and then suddenly things aren't so bad. All we need is Francis Saili to continue his progression and Sonny Bill Williams to return and in a flash that too becomes a logjam of possibilities.

That's why it's hard to understand why people are questioning the decision to move Ben Smith from the right wing, where he's been the best back of the Rugby Championship, and risk undermining his confidence, form and momentum.

Are you kidding? The kid is playing so well he'll probably have a blinder on Saturday night, solve one problem and maybe two if Jane makes any sort of a successful return from his spell out with injury. If not, well at least we know Smith's a heck of a right winger.

Is there a downside to developing depth through this squad? None whatsoever.

Especially when you can keep winning, the way Hansen has managed to do since he took charge of this remarkable team.

So what should we expect Saturday night?

A remarkable world record-equalling 30th successive victory on home soil? Goodness gracious that would be a pretty special number.

But I believe All Blacks fans are perfectly entitled to expect a continuation of their winning way. This is a team that should make short work of the fallible Wallabies if their minds are anywhere near on the job.

After last year, surely they don't slip on the same banana skin. Fool me once, and all that.

I truly believe the perfect test year - never attained in the professional era - is a goal this group is motivated to cross off. That will require a top tour, but that's well within the reach of these guys.

It's the sort of task a team with ambitions of becoming the first to go back-to-back in World Cups, the first All Blacks side ever to win the Cup on foreign soil, should lap up and ask: "What's next?"

We set very high standards for this group of men. Almost unreasonably so. But the most remarkable thing of all is that they continue to meet them.

Couch Potato, Jane has 1 thing Halai doesn't and thats proven test match greatness. Jane would never have been dropped in the first place if not for injury so to be fair, he was not displaced by a better player. He just go injured. Not his fault.
In hindsight not the worst thing as we knew what Jane can do, but it allowed NZ rugby to give Smith an extended run and in turn, unearth a massive talent . Now you have 2 great wingers in Jane and Smith and Savea is playing great rugby too. What to do? Unfortunately, it looks like it has to be between Smith and Jane for the 14 jersey and I dont see Smith being dropped and rightfully so but then again, one cant forget the aerial abilities of Jane or that massive hand off/fend he possesses. Smith is also pretty useful under the high ball too though so it could really be a toss of a coin. They could play ching chong cha/ rock paper scissors to see who starts and who benches and either way, the coach is smiling ;-)

Yes he is proven but when you've had a long injury layoff you don't need to be rushed back in. And he also at least needs to play decent rugby in the itm cup to get some match fitness and some playing form. His form for Wellington was very poor he seemed to lack a yard in pace. No doubt he class but making sure he was 100% and getting some match fitness via a weaker competition should've been goal.

Agree fully. I guess that was the big reason I was keen to see him play. Could not believe he was back in the run on side with almost no rugby under his belt to speak of, of late.
I wanted to see if he puts that black jersey on if it sparks something in him and he picks up where he left off.
Must be shit for Piutau and co hey. I mean, he is starting now by default but he was overlooked by Hansen and co for a player that has not been there all year. He must be dying for a start but more importantly to be given that chance, not have it come like this!
ps..What you talking about "weaker" opposition. Its the 2013 Aussies..Thats as weak as it gets. He would have to warm up against the Aussies to take on North Harbour ;-)

Use to get good entertainment value from Beeno's comments, but now it seems he's lost his relevance. It's the same old, "next year Boks will demolish wee blacks" post in post out, either dementia has set in accounting for the repetitive postings or is it just an indication of a desperate fan yearning for yesteryear when the Boks were an almost unconquerable rugby force or someone who just hates New Zealanders, maybe its a little of all of it.

we must be the envy of every nation to lose the likes of McCaw and jane, only to have cane move of the bench and get in form steven luatua on the bench and also get piutau in the starting line up, lolz,
oh its good to be an All Black fan,

i think McCaw has proven that if ur the goods, then ur the goods, he returned to test rugby with about as much time as jane and was one of the best easy.

no point in arguing about the McCaw factor, but everybody in NZ knows and most of the rugby experts around the world knows his worth, all the wallaby legends were singing McCaws praises after the two wallaby tests, even sharpie said, its not a stretch to say that only McCaw can be away from the game for so long and come out and have such an impact on a game.

ive watched every All Black test in 2013 at least 10 times, and thats not including the video analysis i often do in every match, and i can assure all the doubters, McCaw has been phenomenal.
im very close to finishing my McCaw homework, where ive analysed every 2013 RC/4nat All Black test and made a detail log of every looseforwards workrate,
so far not only is McCaw on top, but hes on top by a country mile.

Is Carol Jane really a big loss, when Israel Fagg is at 15? NewZealand allways like to have at least one imitation Lomu's in the back three.

Sharkbok: Lomu is hard to imitate but Savea is more Lomu like of the three starters in the back 3. Piutau and Dagg have different styles. We have some real talent back there even without Cory Jane.

McCheat obviously surrendering to the FACT hes just old now and Hooper would have OWNED him again and again... RE Jane was always big ask for the tranny looking character from wellington - him and Nonu might be having a lovers tiff....

Anyway what does Rene Ranger have to do to get into the AIGs clearly one of the best backs in the whole rugby world... maybe he disagrees with the AIGs policy of paying the refs kickbacks....

Not holding too much hope out for Wobs as depth sorely tested and big travel schedule in the last 4weeks...

Hoping QC has a breakthrough game and Matty Toomua smaashed the the certified tranny nonu...

I understand competitiveness and it is great if you don't cross the line, but some of you people's comment's are crossing the line, the nickname's you are giving some of the nz player's degrading. And apart from your consistent whining about how the ref's are in the the ab's pocket's which is not true, that is an opinion and a allegation, I am not saying the ab's don't give away penalties, all team's do but just seem's from what I have seen here, is this consistent continuity of referencing the ref's so called favor of the abs. Just the nature and context of people's post's here is never constuctive, always the same thing about oh the abs are in the ref's pocket'sm oh whine whine whine, maybe with considering all the factor's in the world it's just the Ab's are on another level right now, so you have choice but to resort to the nearest common denominator? As for Mccaw scared of Hooper lol you cannot be serious, Hooper is a good player albiet a tad overrated, but Mccaw has played all the great 7's I am sure him making the decision to sit out the test, had nothing to do with Hooper, same thing with Pocock but after Mccaw dominated him the wc semi case closes. Even if the wallabies haden't travelled, like the ab's haven't, your last comment about tranny nonu illustrates my point JMO.

Most of the time I take such ramblings from Redsman, Beeno, etc. as a joke (they are just having a good whine) but once and a while we have to straighten them out.
Hope we get a good game against Oz. Let's see how the three changes go. Like the way we are building depth but we need to see someone put their hand up at hooker.

Hey Cloudy good to see you on here  . Thanks for the tip. I was just checking the sites for the best feed.
Some positive news on the wife, meds are working.
Hope to see some real running rugby in this game. There is always something to be excited about when the ABs are playing. If it's a close game I love it (more if we win though), if it's a run away score for the ABs I love it as you get to see some great play. If they lose it just fuels the interest in their preparations and adjustments. It's a no lo se situation for us fans, lol
