Ewen McKenzie is sharpening his axe, forecasting changes to the Wallabies side massacred by the All Blacks at Eden Park.

Injuries to hooker Nathan Charles and winger Pat McCabe will bring at least two new selections but more are in the offing following Saturday night’s 50-21 drubbing.

McKenzie confirmed he would look closely at promoting several squad members “itching to get a go” for Australia’s next Rugby Championship clash, against South Africa in Perth on Saturday week.

He earmarked powerful Brumbies centre Tevita Kuridrani for a return that would likely see Adam Ashley-Cooper move back to the wing spot left vacant by McCabe (neck).

Halfback Nic White is under immense pressure from Nick Phipps and Bernard Foley is also demanding a recall, while McKenzie is considering tinkering with his outmuscled pack.

James Horwill and Ben McCalman are two abrasive forwards waiting in the wings and set to be granted auditions in next Sunday’s NRC match in Perth between the Perth Spirit and Brisbane City.

Will Skelton, Scott Higginbotham and Ben Alexander all came off the bench as New Zealand ran up a 44-point scoreline by the 60-minute mark in Auckland.

“I said it last week, there are some good players who aren’t playing so we’ll revisit that,” McKenzie said on Sunday.

“Selection is a one-game contract.

“We don’t tend to change things on one game but we like to see improvement and there’s good players missing out.

“I’ll give you an example, Kuridrani came on and did a good job at the back end of the game.

“There’s players itching to get a go and we recognise that.”

NSW Waratahs playmaker Foley has done nothing wrong all year and provides a major quandry to McKenzie after Kurtley Beale and Matt Toomua failed to fire in their two games together at 10 and 12.

The Wallabies coach’s biggest disappointment was his side’s passiveness in defence – allowing quick, front-foot ball to the hosts – and laxity in reacting to their own turnovers.

Both Julian Savea and Kieran Read finished breakout tries from mistakes while Australia was hot on attack.

A total of 19 tackles were missed as the All Blacks split the defensive line for nine breaks.

“I felt we were a metre off the pace in attack and defence the whole way,” McKenzie said.

It’s now been 12 years since Australia last retained the Bledisloe Cup but All Blacks skipper Richie McCaw said he never got tired of holding it up.

The pressure is on the Wallabies, unbeaten in their previous eight Tests, to immediately bounce back in the same way the All Blacks did from the 12-12 draw in Bledisloe I.

“We have to respond after that,” McKenzie said. “We’ve enjoyed winning over the last period of time and we’ve been competitive so it was a massive disappointment.

“We created some expectation there and it’s not as though we came up short, we came up a long way short.”

Many of us thought he made some poor selections anyway so we will see who he comes up with this time.

What lost it for the Aussies ? Don't think they know what hit them but obviously it was totally awesome. From what I've read the Aussies are saying it's a mental problem. They are now seeking mental relaxation after suffering 'trauma'.

But there also maybe a problem with leadership after the captains curse struck the team. James Horwill (hamstring), David Pocock (knee) and Will Genia (knee) all captains in the past two years.  Michael Hooper is basically a fill in and the 22yr old surfer dude may be out of his depth in the captains role.

Australians are also looking sideways at the coach for subjecting their proud nation to what was a humiliating record loss. McKenzie has a long way to go to matching Robbie Deans record as Wallaby coach. At least Deans could boast wins against the All Blacks , South Africa and England .

This is not news. Anyone knows that the Aussies will pick their biggest side for the Boks and judging by the Argies pack, them too!! Aussies know if they are to beat the All Blacks, they must select their best playmakers and tacticians. Against the Boks, it's all just physical. You can be as tactical as you want at the breakdowns but when you getting smashed by big men all day long, you do need to match that physicality somewhat. Not saying the AB's don't have that physicality because they certainly do but the AB's are superior both tactically and physically over Aus so Aus need to try be smart!
Boks are more dominant physically over the AB's which is why we are often leading test matches against them through 60 mins but when we tire, they pull through with rugby smarts!
Aussies will have all their biggest guys in and around the squad on match day. Hell, fat Mkenzie is probably trying to get clearance from IRB for Jacques Potgieter to play for Aus too!!

Surely Foley will get his chance this time around. In his combination with Phipps our back line will have some stability which was a wee bit lacking. Beale just does not look the all round number 10 Link was hoping he would be. Maybe Beale in the centres with Toomua and AAC on the wing. Should be used to each others play as it is almost the Waratah back line. Hooper is doing a good job as captain by leading from the front. He certainly stood out in a well beaten pack. I can see him being a constant pest for some of the bigger Bok forwards. Our depth or lack thereof is certainly being shown up in certain areas.

The question is will the Aussies panic and throw the baby out with the bathwater making wholesale changes. Or will McKenzie take a conservative approach and play it cool with minimal changes thinking the Springboks could be ripe for the picking after two subpar performances against Argentina?

Plenty of flying Fijians at Links disposal to spice things up even without Speight .Another Fijian Kuridrani also tipped to start. Beale should retain a place in the team, not sure where but Foley and Phipps more likely to be the new halves.

Changes harder to predict in the forwards. Liam Gill or Matt Hodgson could be joining Hooper on the flanks. Aussies really need to find their mongrel again . They were like possums caught in headlights on Saturday night. Totally mesmerized by a relentlessly awesome ABs team. Time to snap out of it Australia.

Deans castigated? We loved him. We are a tough crowd when it comes to coaching. Mind not as tough I would say as some Saffas.

Its simple really, Ewen needs to get mongrel in his pack and has the players but needs to select them. Everyone realises, or should do, that he got it wrong and made the abs look good.Phipps, Foley, Beale KudraniAAC, Speight Folau
Better backline than the abs. Get the mongrel in the pack and there shouldn't be much problem in beating the wee abs in their third bledis low trinket sideshow. Which on the rugby played would then make it 2-1 to OZ.

Even JW knows that Ewen got it wrong. What a great pity as Oz lost a great chance to down the wee abs.
Now we will clearly have a much better Oz side to contend with.
I trust the P umas still have some fight left in them to take on the abs. This could be fun!

Beeno: glad to read that you think the Boks are capable of lifting their game - your optimism is to be commended.

Yes, I also agree that the Boks should be able to do better than being shunted all over the park by the 12th ranked team in the world.

We look to see a much improved game when you play the decimated wobblies. They are very dispirited so go easy on them. Scoring 50 points against them should be achievable n'est-ce pas.

Admidst all the articles on the Roar I found this gem by Russ Adams. Here are some of his thoughts.

"The ARU, in NSW alone, is grappling with the NRL, AFL and football. They need the bums on seats to stay alive so they don’t mind giving their public false hope in order to get the cash, and hey, they can always roll out some new flashy ads before the next home Test to scrub away the sense of betrayal."

" Australia expect to win and are quick to seek third-party excuses for losses. Criticism for one’s own team is common because the idea that we were outplayed simply does not occur in the Australian mind."

"I was born in 1985, and as a youngster coming up during the 90s I watched doe-eyed at images of Kieren Perkins, Mark Taylor, John Eales toting medals and trophies all to the sound of our anthem. A decade of Aussie glory book-ended by our two Rugby World Cup wins. Success was frequent and in time, became taken for granted."

" Read the Aussie media in the build up to a Bledisloe and then again after a loss, and what you’ll see is a great deal of hope mongering, and then a lot of finger pointing."

 @cloudy,
beeno doesn't worry about all the other teams, he's just worried about the AB. He talks about how to improve the aussie backline wishing it happens and thinking only in their match agaist the AB in 2 MONTHS time from now but forgetting that the next match the aussies play is against the boks. More than a boks' fan he looks like an anti-AB fan, otherwise it would be completely schizophrenic that a boks' fan would like the aussies to improve when they have to play SA.

@beeno,

"Believe me the Mighty Boks are very capable of lifting their game quite some way. They are big match players kbbs. Time to go orc (I mean ) wee ab hunting! "

After what we've watched of the RC, how do you dare to write this? wee ab hunting?
Man, your ability to escape the reality is only comparable to your ability making excuses. Yeah, the boks can improve and tomorrow can rain froggs. I mean, everything can happen but the only thing that we have to make an anaIisys is what has already happened. And in the 2 first matches of the RC what we've seen is an AB team that after a bad day bounced back to their best and this means to be the benchmark team at world level.
This has very little to discuss, all the anaIysts from all the media have been unanimous:

"how wrong could I have been"......."The stuff about them losing their aura is just nonsense"..... "when you see All Blacks counter-attacking from their own goal-line and going the length of the field, it's stuff you just don't see from other teams. No one has excitement mixed with that much ability.". Andrew Merthens

"It has not been a good week for your beleaguered columnist. Pilloried by the masses for a gross error in observation last week, the All Blacks - with Richie McCaw leading the charge - piled into my criticism of them last week with gusto, disproving pretty much every word I wrote".  Planet Rugby Editor Danny Stephens

"New Zealand produced rugby from another planet" and "If you thought New Zealand were a fading force, think again". Ben Coles. Planet Rugby

And I could continue endless...........

On the other hand we have the springboks who not only played crap but they were outplayed for the most of the 2 matches by the 12th in the world.

"Salta provided evidence that the creaks that started to show themselves in the South African game in the second test against Wales may not have just been an aberration".......... "he (Meyer)would have to admit that in both instances (against Wales and Arg.) the opposition lack of self-belief and consequent inability to close out the games is all that stood between them and defeats that could have been by humiliating margins." Duncan Johnstone

"A lead was thrown away by naivety and inexperience. Two of the tries the Springboks scored were gifts, as was the winning penalty". Planet Rugby Editor Danny Stephens

And what can be worst for the boks is that some very worrying issues were clearly showed.

"Taking their heads out of the sand and admitting that there is a massive problem with the scrum would be a good start, but the Springbok self-[removed]ysis will have to go far further than that if the problems that were exposed by Argentina are not to lead to crisis later in the Rugby Championship," veteran rugby writer Gavin Rich said on SuperSport.

The most visible problem could be the scrums but it's not the only one. They have IMO big problems also with the flyhalf and in the centers and what is more worrying for them is that this issues have not easy solutions, at least with the squad selected for touring australasia.

The sharks' front row has been overplayed and now we find that Mtawarira is not at his best ( so he was benched) but the du Plessis bros. are totally out of form.
And while Strauss could fill the hooker's gap there's no other choice for the props. From the squad selected, Steenkamp is not more up to the standard and I think Nyakane is not yet as neither is yet Van der Merwe. This last one could be the future but has to learn a lot about scrums (eg., in the last match of the season he was outplayed in the scrums by the Rebels' front row!!!)
And now is an essential need for the boks to impose their scrum over the aussies' and AB's.

At flyhalf, Meyer has introduced Pollard when he's too green (which is very normal considering he has started how many SR games? 2 or 3?) and I have the feeling that he's being rushed.
Steyn is so unidimensional and has very little game-time this season while lambie failed everytime he played for the boks.

Very similar to what happens at centers. JdV is out of form and has very little game.time this year while de Allende is too green yet.

So if i was a boks' fan I wouldn't be looking and pointing at other teams' failures......

I know the argies are fantastic scrummages it is really valued by players & fans alike. It has been said they would rather see their pack decimate to opposition pack than score a try, lol However, the Boks & SA teams in general also value forward domination & their game is largely built on this. So for the Bok pack to be man-handled is a big deal. ABs just want to win the game so if the scrum isn't doing too well they will find another way to win (legally Beeno, lol).

And I don't think the boks will be "capable of lifting their game", considering the few time left and the players touring, at least in the way they need to, so I think they'll lose their next 2 matches.

I think the whole season should be taken into account to determine form, not just the last 2 games.
Argentina are a strong team when they select all of their best players.
I think the Boks have a good chance of beating Australia in Perth, but little to no chance of winning in New Zealand.
Apparently stats show the Boks had the best scrum in the world last year, but the Argentinians made mince meat of it.  Some of the Bok players seem out of form, many of them Sharks player.
