What wee Mehrts doesn't realise yet is teams will also have to watch Hougaard/ Reinach as well. Once we get our two young centers Allende and Jan working properly they will aslo have to watch those two very closely as well as watching Hendricks and Willie and whoever takes over from Habana. Until last year all they had to do was watch Willie.

Watching the Boks play will be what teams will be doing especially when the Bopk Super Pack emmerges - should start happening next year.

Sorry Mehrts I know you want to bring some comfort to all grieving kbbs but be realistic oak!! However if there are any wise kbbs - A CONTRADICTION IN TERMS I KNOW - THEN HEED THE WISE ADVICE OF BEENO - THE ONE WHO KNOWS.

Cape Town - Former All Black flyhalf Andrew Mehrtens says Springbok flyhalf sensation Handre Pollard can expect teams to "quickly work him out".

The 20-year-old Pollard was instrumental in South Africa's 27-25 Rugby Championship win over New Zealand at Ellis Park last Saturday.

Pollard scored two tries as the Springboks employed an attacking approach to beat their old rivals for the first time in three years.

Mehrtens, via a column on the Stuff.co.nz website, said Pollard likes to run hard at the defensive lines which was not the case when Morne Steyn was the Springbok pivot.

He said this caused the All Blacks more problems than usual.

"Handre Pollard stands flatter and obviously likes to run hard at the defence. Gone are the days when defenders know they can drift off the likes of Morne Steyn and not worry about defending the tricky seam near the scrum," wrote Mehrtens.

However, Mehrtens noted that Pollard is still young and said he might find the going tougher in future as teams start to work him out.

"Pollard is still only a pup, so when comparisons are made with former Boks first-five Henry Honiball I'm going to hold fire on that until I see more of him.

"Maybe Pollard is more fluid than Honiball, but I doubt he would be as tough as the farmer who used to travel enormous distances to get to Sharks trainings and tackle like a 'Blade', which was his nickname.

"Pollard can expect teams to quickly work him out; the second-season syndrome rarely applies now because all the analysis these days means you're worked out even quicker. He can expect defenders to adjust their mentality very quickly and be ready for him," continued Mehrtens.

This siege mentality must end sometimes Beeno - noone is after you or Pollard. Please take everything Mehrtens says with lots and lots of salt. He is just jealous and Pollard is definitely yards better than him. Of course it will be a mark of respect to how good Pollard is rated if other Teams pay him more attention.

Too true Hakwa! Simple fact is, Pollard can still kick like the traditional SA 10's, only now the opposition cannot assume that will be the case. That'll keep defenders on him a moment longer and that could open the door for those playing outside him. Crikey its good to have a proper flyhalf....like everyone else!
Pollard does need to do some serious work on his kicking, but he is young and one has to assume he'll improve.

The bit that puzzles me is how is Mehrts qualified to comment on a running flyhalf?

 Just win...aka "CLOT"
Yes he was born in Durban unfortunately to parents who were not true blooded Sharkies.
You really have to feel for him.
Pity you could not fill his shoes and represent your country as he did.

All players are "worked out"  -  some are easier than ohers to contain and the question really is players are distinguished by their ability to vary play - tha ability to show ball sense distinguish between players and that is what isimportant.
Oncw a player becomes robotic - doibng the same thing over nd over again - h is a sitting duck for opoosing players.   That is why it was so easy to "work out" a player like Morne Steyn.   If the player has a variety of aces up his sleeve - the opposition will never really work him out.
I think that Pollard has shown thus far that he is not one-dimensional and  that is wyhy he can be worked out - but notwith certainty as to what he is going to do at any given moment.

"Gone are the days when defenders know they can drift off the likes of Morne Steyn and not worry about defending the tricky seam near the scrum," wrote Mehrtens."
Morne actually made defending attacks out wide easier for the opposition because everyone knows he is not going to attack the inside channel. The defense can drift out to prevent gaps or overlaps.
With Pollard eveyone knows he likes to run onto the advantage line - ala Henry Honnibal, but he can also kick and distribute with short and long passes.
The opposition flyhalf will have to stand closer to the scrums and set pieces and rucks, & the loosies will have to be ready to provide cover defence.
This should make it easier to attack out wide better, and it will also take off some of the focus on Willie Leroux. When leroux comes in at 2nd reciever it provides options to create space, but it is better when he is on the outside where the space is to break the line, or put someone else away.
So all in all, even if their is more focus on Pollard, it should create some more opportunity for others.
As for Mehrtens. He still craps himself when ever he thinks of Honnibal
