South African boxers have now won a total of 122 “world” titles.

When Danie Venter stopped Shawn Cox in the first round to win the vacant World Boxing Federation cruiserweight belt in Pretoria on September 21 2013, he became the 72nd South African to claim a title on offer from one of the international organisations.

Thabo Sonjica’s victory over Silvester Lopez in East London on July 6 had brought the number of “world” titles won by SA boxers to 121.

Sonjica won the IBO welterweight title when he stopped Lopez in the sixth round. He followed in the footsteps of Simpiwe Vetyeka, whose victory over Daud Cino Yordan in Indonesia had taken the number 120.

Earlier, Gideon Buthelezi joined the list of SA boxers who have won three "world" titles when he beat Edrin Dapudong in a fight for the vacant IBO junior bantamweight title.

The number of SA boxers who have won some or other "world" title since Willie Smith defeated Teddy Baldock for the British version of the world bantamweight title has continued to grow in the past few years.

Vic Toweel is the only universally recognised world champion in SA boxing history. All the others have held only a version, or more than one version, of the titles recognised by organisations that have their own ratings and champions.

Look the only hope for nz is to run and keep running. Fortunately for them the Boks are still not quite where they will be by the end of next year but their chances remain slim. Just don' t try and mix it with the big boys abs - run run and run.
