This talk of F du Preez as the short term Bok captain, giving way eventually to Pierre Spies......may only be just talk. Let's hope so, Pierre is no competitor. He can't even exhort himself, let alone others.
But it raises the broader question of how Meyer views his new assignment. Does he plan to bring together the best of South African rugby.....or simply pick the Bools using other franchise players to fix weaknesses in the Bools line up. In essence a souped up Bools team.
Unattractive as this is conceptually it has worked in the past.....NZ teams heavily weighted with Crusaders have been succesful.
But I don't think the Bools have the depth to pull this model off. Only Hougaard, Morne, F du Preez and Bakkies would contest for my starting team....and F du Preez needs to eschew( pun intended) his Kobe beef to be considered. That's not enough Bools to form a core team....not by a mile.
So I think Meyer has to choose the best players and forget provincial affiliations. Let's not forget the debacle at the President's Cup where Greg Norman left South American and South African golfers off the team , in favour of over the hill Aussies. Supposedly for some nebulous competitive advantage. That was a flop, and a Bool based Bok team will also be a flop.
