RYAN VREDE writes that the mentorship of Heyneke Meyer will be crucial if Pierre Spies is to realise his potential as a Test No 8.

Spies will start for the Springboks against England, not because his Super Rugby form warrants it (this was the criterion Meyer said would be foremost when selections were made) but because of a lack of competition.

Meyer rates the Stormers’ Duane Vermuelen highly and sees him as Spies’ primary competition. (Spies is no comptition to a fit Vermulen) However, a knee injury has ruled Vermuelen out of action until the resumption of Super Rugby in June. Sharks incumbent Keegan Daniel is thought to have physical (Please note Dave!) and technical limitations that would preclude him from selection while the Cheetahs’ Philip van der Walt and Lions’ Josh Strauss aren’t on the radar at present.

The option of shifting a flanker adept at playing in the position will be considered but at present Spies has the inside lane because Meyer believes he has the aptitude to dominate Test rugby (Well one onders when and if evr thsi will happen) and he knows Meyer’s playing structures well given that they will replicate those Spies has played in for years at the Bulls.

Spies’ best form has been displayed under the tutelage of Meyer, who converted him from a wing to eighthman in 2005 (What a tradegy that was!!!!) , assuring him that he had a better chance of being a Springbok if he made the shift. Spies was duly capped at Test level a year later, then was outstanding in the Bulls’ title-winning 2007 Super 12 campaign.

But his form has drifted between very good (the 2009 and 2010 Super Rugby campaigns being prime examples) and ordinary since.(When I told the bulle this they had a hissy fit!!!) He hasn’t progressed as expected as an international player. A strong argument can be made that he has stagnated, if not regressed.

The world’s elite eights possess a degree of mongrel Spies lacks or hasn’t exhibited (Exactly so). Forty seven Tests into his international career you have to believe it is the former. The frustration with Spies is that his impressive physical constitution is not supported by a mental constitution of the ilk that the All Blacks’ Kieran Read (rather mention Duanne Vermlen who chomps up oaks like Read!!) – the pre-eminent player in his position in the game – possesses. I’ve written this previously and still have no reason to change my view.

Meyer doesn’t share this view. He has consistently extolled Spies’ virtues, among those being mental strength that ensures he won’t fold or become anonymous under pressure and a fearlessness that makes him indispensable to the team’s cause.

One of his biggest tasks as Springboks coach will be to draw out those qualities in Spies and ensure that consistent excellence marks the remainder of his Test career, not just the sporadic flashes of brilliance we’ve become accustomed to.

Well good luck to Meyer. One sincerely hopes he gets Spies right. I do hope however he is not like so many bulle herders who tend to have their heads burried in the sand.

To be brutally honest, do we really have a fit No8 that is on top of his game?  Alberts seems to have promised so much but lately he is just a crash-ball player.  Straus is not a natural No8.  So what is the poor coach to do?

It is a problem for him. Alberts has been dropped by the sharks - what in the world has happened there!!

I wonder how Coetzee would go at number 8 he seems lik ea guy who could do a great  jobthere?  Also as they are playing right now Ashley Johnston may do better. The Bok loose trio has been really messed up because of injuries. Now it Jaques Potgieter who would not disgrace the Boks. Stander might come into the picture.

As Dave said how would Josh fare in better company. Say he were playing for the bulle - how would he do - better than Spies?

One has to hope Meyer can restore Pierre but why hasn't he already done that. Also how effective has Brussouw been?  To me our best loose trio was Burger, Vermulen and Elstadt. A no nonsense trio.

My other hope is that Beast gets back to the form he showed at the commencement of his career where the crowds would chant Beast, Beast whenever he got the ball. That has died away simply because Beast has not put in a 100% effort.  He scrummed well last week so its a start.

I like Coetzee, but 8 is a specialised position and not anyone can play the role needed at that position.  If and when Schalk is fit - how would we do with Brussow and Coetzee at 6 & 7 and SB @ 8?

I dont like the tunes Meyer has ben playing. Fourie... Matfield... and now he wants to help spies??? WTF!!!!!

Is he offering him one of his balls? Cos in my opinion that is all Spies needs!

2 big hairy kahunas!

Where does Vrede get this crap from - the guy is an idiot. Meyer has said time and again that no slections have been made or opinions voiced so how the hell does he know who is up for selection. What an idiot

Chippo, Meyer has in fact made some alarming comments - return of matfield being  a real clanger. Also I think he has overdone his bulle coaching selections. Why is Nienaber not the the defence coach. Also what has Loubscher done. Pieter Rossouw is th Bulle Super 15 coach. Is Loubscher the best the world has to offer as a backline coach. This is big gamble by Meyer and we shall have to see how it pans out.

One hopes guys like Alberts and Kan Kan get going.

Coetzee has the pace to play number 8 and is pretty good at driving the ball up and his defence is good.  Difficult of course to play him as a Bok 8 without seeing in fact how he shapes there.

Meyer is failing to comply already.  Flatfield...LOL and Mc Fairlane another LOL.  Nienaber would be a better choice.
