Cape Town - Utility back Frans Steyn and hooker Bismarck du Plessis are reportedly in Springbok coach Allister Coetzee’s plans for the France series in June.

According to Afrikaans weekly newspaper, Rapport, SA Rugby has already informed the two players’ club of Coetzee’s intention to utilise them.

Both players ply their trade at French outfit Montpellier, who are coached by former Bok mentor Jake White.

The 29-year-old Steyn played the last of his 53 Tests in 2012 and had in recent times made himself unavailable for selection.

There was a contractual dispute with SA Rugby, while Steyn also made himself unavailable in 2015 following the death of his brother.

Du Plessis, 32, last featured for the Boks at the 2015 Rugby World Cup in England but now looks set to add to his 79 Test caps.

South Africa will play three Tests against the French - in Pretoria (June (10), Durban (June 17) and Johannesburg (June 24).

The series falls in World Rugby’s Test window, so Montpellier would be obliged to release the players.

 
I was wondering what desperate plans would come to the fore.

Fats Fransie ... to be slotted in where ... at flyhalf?

And Bismarck? Is he coming in on the bench or will he take Bongi's starting spot away from him?

I suspect this is just the start of Coetze''s absurdity for 2017.

Best lock in SA but has a way to go just to polish Whitelock and Retallic's boots.

I am disgusted by that story.   It could only result advice by White - as clueless as Coetzee is about backline play.     
The last time Fat Fransie played in SA he was disgustingly poor.    He was -
*   the worst defender in the Sharks backline and the worst rated center in Super Rugby;
*   his aimless kicking, ball-hogging and poor passing game caused more possession turnovers and ball possession losses than any other player managed in one year; and
*   he neutralized the Sharks backline completely that year.  
Fat Fransie was described by  Plumtree as no center and that is a fact.   However, he is no better as a flyhalf either - a poor and slow decision-maker.    Paceless as well.   He was tried in the past as Springbok flyhalf and dropped because of his total lack of ball sense and slow virtually non-existent decision-making.
My only real consolation is that like Morne Steyn last year he will not last in the team, but even if he last two games like Morne Steyn last year - it will be two games too many.   

Frans Steyn only has one knee cap these days. He is not international standard anymore- he is just not athletic enough.  His pole kicking is average these days- without the long kick
He is a good crashball, nothing more and nothing less. This is why the SA backline coaches love his style of play- because they know he will follow their aimless game plan. 
Bismaark is a sign of desperation. Certainly not a contender for 2019. More of a stop gap to help Coetzee keep his job. 

 SA players have a reputation of trying to get under their opponent's skin. These players play in the french league, they are probably in a better position to achieve that as they are familiar with the french players.

It will be much needed. Quite a lot of people want France to get a few games in order to comfort a good customer. And Fance brings nothing to the international level but their scrum. Getting wins over SA will shed a positive light on that side of their game.

 Well, another coherent post, but I have to disagree, beating South Africa won't do much for the French.
