Just to let you know, the Celtic Clubs issued a statement yesterday offering their backing to the proposals and, this is the best bit, adding that, whether their Clubs/Unions or the IRB vetoes the plans, they will still be going ahead.

This would suggest that they have been very much involved in the discussions all along, don't you think ?

So much for the dastardly English being in charge and leaving everyone high and dry, hey ?

As I said before, this one will run and run......all the way to the Courts, probably !!

The details have not been released and is still very vague.   That may be the crux of the matter.   Also one never knows what promises were made to the Celtic Clubs.  That is where the main problems are at present and that is where the situation can end up in the court.

If it is merely another name for the Heineken Cup - with more English and French Clubs being allowed into the main competition - it may be acceptable - but since we do not have the details - it is anyone's guess what will happen in future.

 Exactly, Mike.

But the point I am making is that the countries have all been involved from the outset, no-one has been " left out ", it seems. As was being suggested.

And no, we don't know what is going to happen. But it was obvious that, in the current format, the Competition was not a fair one so maybe it did need overhauling. And, if all parties are consulted from the outset and are happy with that ( the HC has actually evolved into the present state, so it wasn't something the Anglo/French Clubs agreed to initially ), then so be it.

And I actually prefer my Premiership to the HC anyway. I would rather watch that and win the League than the HC !! Sadly, my team has yet to win the Prem, even though they have won the HC

@Mike. Now hang on for a moment. Now suddenly you admit that there is not a lot of detail available (read: I do not know all the detail) and that it is anyone's guess what will happen in future. Yet, despite your lack of detail, you chose to make remarks like:

  1. First of all the English wanted to get at the Irish clubs and write of Scotland and Italy - now they are running after the self same unions whom they wanted to write off earlier - and all that because the French would not play along with their scheming.

  2. ...........the English Clubs are leading the efforts to destroy the Cup concept.

  3. As I read the original article as well as your posted article what is being proposed is a kind of structure for the Irish, Scottish and Italian clubs equal to the Grade 1 Division of the CC - where they would play on lower level and then be given a chance to play play-offs to qualify for inclusion the next year in the top competition.

  4. The clubs outside of the Championship will get near nothing of the revenue unless they qualify for the main competition. If that is not trying to get only the French and English clubs to be in the competition - heaven only knows what it is otherwise.

  5. A stinking mess is being created to benefit only the English - whatever you may say.

  6. I do not hate the English Clubs - what I do not like is dirty secret deals by a small number of clubs for their own benefit - without regard to global rugby interests.

  7. All this moaning about qualifying is bull dust to say the least.

  8. By the way your senseless arguments about the qualification issue for Heineken Cup participation makes no sense - other than the fact that they insist on having more than 6 teams in the competition and is prepared to shaft everybody else in the process.

Maub the crux of your entire argument is based on this remark of yours:

"I may be wrong in this case - maybe it is just my inherent distrust of the English instilled in me by my grandmother..........."  http://http://sarugby.com/forum.cfm?threadid=6394

In other words you have been having one hell of an argument born out of your underlying and general mistrust of a nation.

Ceradyne

I distrust all that is done in secrecy and that remains the issue.   However, the issue is now in the public domain - but the details are still secret or at least have not been provided.

I will wait and see what is going to happen.   I think there are a lot of people in the world that is very wary of what especially the English politicians say and I quoted the Blair example of outright lies.   So yes - when things are done in secrecy and behind closed doors there is always room for distrust.

See. Now you are confusing the English and the British again. Blair was the British PM, not the English PM. Be that as it may. That is a minor issue. Thing is that you are coming up with Blair as an example of the English way. Does that mean that Jacob Zuma  and his shenanigans represent the South African way? Would you also concur that, because we had a basically racist political dispensation, we as South Africans are all essentially racist. Also George W Bush was guilty of the same that Blair was guilty of. Does that mean that all Americans are essentially untrustworthy and liars? In addition, you keep on missing the point that the information, as to which other rugby bodies were involved, was withheld at the request of those particular bodies.

That is unfortunately the way things happen is sports. Remember the secret happenings in 1995 which subsequently led to professional rugby? Who was in the midst of all that secrecy? One Mr Francois Pienaar, and when it came to light he even denied having received any payments from Kerry Packer (was it?). It was only after Louis Luyt came up with the copies of the cheques that he confirmed what has happened. Does that make SARU a chronic secretive scaniving bunch of bullshitters? Go check who were all in on that little secret. Want to know the names? Read this:
Stealing Rugby
For the first time on television, Stealing Rugby tells this extraordinary story in the words of the major participants. We hear from the players, the officials and the businessmen, including Phil Kearns, Sean Fitzpatrick, Francois Pienaar, Sam Chisholm, Ian Frykberg, Simon Poidevin, Ross Turnbull, Dr Louis Luyt and journalist Peter Fitzsimons.

This Heineken Cup story is a storm in a teacup compared to that one that changed the entire face of rugby forever and it was done in much more secrecy with money changing hands as well.
