We seem to have a settled squad with only a few openings available The A side was meant to provide some answers but in the end, an unprepared and disjointed side proved very little At fullback Willie looks settled, with Willemse an option and Fassi the A side option. Missed opportunity for me is not giving Fassi more game time but one of the worst calls is not investing in Gelant as a fullback option. I’d be very happy with Willie, Fassi and Gelant as our fullback options On the wing, we have established players in Mapimpi and Kolbe and to lesser extent Nkosi. The find of the year has been Arendse, who is another Kolbe. Moodie has had a sniff Missed opportunity for me is Tambwe who is lighting up French rugby at the moment. Passport issues seem to be keeping him out of the Bok picture At centre we have incumbents de Allende and Am, with Jessie Kriel getting game time at 13, but failing to impress. At 12 Esterhuizen has had a sniff. We have failed to identify a good back up to Am at 13. Opportunity missed here is Rohan Janse v Rensburg - he would have been a better option than Kriel as would Henco v Wyk At 12 missed opportunities include not giving Willemse a run at 12 and failing to give Esterhuizen more time there. At flyhalf Pollard is the incumbent, with Jantjies the deputy. Willemse has been given an extended run there. Libbok has had a sniff, with the opportunity missed not giving him more test time. At 9 Faf is in charge with Hendrikse and Reinach his deputies. Jantjies has struggled and there are a number of handy 9’s who could add depth Props are pretty settled with Ox, Kitshoff, Malherbe and Koch used. Nyakane seems to have slipped. Missed opportunity is not giving Thomas du Toit more game time and not picking Wilco Louw as an option Like the props the hookers are settled in Mbonambi and Marx. Dweba was given a taste but was thrown under the bus. Missed opportunity was not easing Dweba into test rugby not throwing him in the deep end. It’s a pity Grobelaar is injured as he looked really good before the injury. He adds something different, being smaller and more mobile than our main 3. At lock Eben and Lood stand tall, with Mostert filling in. I’m not a fan of Mostert given his lack of physicality but he is there to stay unfortunately. I hope we see the return of RG Snyman sooner than later. Orie was a pathetic selection giving rise to the missed opportunity in not selecting the very physical and impressive Jason Jenkins, who at least got a sniff with the A side. He is equally at home at 4 or 5. Moerat has had a sniff, I like him but he is no Jenkins. Amongst the loosies, the incumbents include Kolisi, PSDT, Wiese and Kwagga. Elrigh Louw, v Staaden and Roos have had a sniff. Missed opportunity was not giving Roos more test time especially considering it was wasted on Fourie. The du Preez twins once again proved what massive missed opportunities they are after being standouts for the A side So to sum up, missed opportunities to invest include Gelant at fullback Tambwe on the wing Rohan Janse v Rensburg at 13, Willemse and Esterhuizen at 12 Libbok at 10 Thomas du Toit and Wilco Louw at prop Jason Jenkins at lock Roos, Elrigh Louw and the du Preez twins as loosies

I don’t agree with everything….but a good summary of the year.

Dave

I believe that with a little more space Willemse is more dangerous playing at 13 than at 12.

There is something about Esterhuizen the coaching staff does not like.    Maybe it is his lack of real pace and deficiency n defense - that is the real problem with him I think.

As to Jantjies he is finished as a test player.   I think that Pollard may also have lost the plot and he is not the same he was in 2018 and 2019.     In 2019 he was known for attacking the gain line effectively - in 2022 there was no evidence of that.   Maybe it was caused by frequent injuries over the past year.     Even on club level Montpellier was not satisfied with him hence his release to play club rugby in England.    Not sure what will happen to him next year.

I hope Snyman comes back sooner rather than later and agree with you about Jenkins.   Mostert is a very limited player - he is a poor open-field defender and ineffective as a defender in traffic he virtually always makes weak tackles with the tackled player going forward n tackles and often needs help in tackles and is useless at ball protection and recovery at breakdowns due to physical deficiency - would like to see a more effective player in the squad than him.

Esterhuizen is a quality player and should have been given more starts for the Boks He literally makes the Prem team of the week every week here playing for Quin’s Your take on him is rubbish

Good summary Saffex, couldn't have put it better. It is almost as if the coaches were using two different books. The old and trusted Rassie, titled, Stop, Skiet and Donner vs the evaluation of giving the ball more air and not to be afraid to attack from your 22 like we saw Willemse did this weekend. Great to see that we can score long range tries again. Only concern is that the malls have been blunted, not sure if its to do with how it is reffed etc.

Biggest failings for me is Deon Fourie, seems like a solid team player but why cap the oak. We have Kwagga and Van Staaden that are excellent 6s.

Roos should have been selected ahead of Vermeulen and Libbok should have been in the squad ahead of Frans Steyn. Those two would be my 5th choice. In the event we have a mini injury crisis.

Then, putting the Irish team into context, they lost two games this year. Got destroyed by the ABs and it could have been a different game had it not been for this silly card system. The Irish are nowhere when Sexton is crocked.

But maybe it is better for team if Rassie works with World Rugby and let Nienabaar get on with the game. Deon Davids at least has the most experience coach there and he did a decent job with the Queens and with limited player resources.

I hope they can put all of this together next year and select the team.

Also agree on Tambwe, probably better than Arendse

I would have loved to see a trial game between the URC best players vs International players to see which players are the best
