Ex Keo

John Mitchell’s tenure as Lions coach appears to be nearing an end as a group of senior players led by captain Josh Strauss has expressed grave dissatisfaction with him.

Keo.co.za understands that the players have long been frustrated at Mitchell’s man management, which often features vitriolic criticism and unusually punishing training sessions, especially after performances he deems unsatisfactory.

One such session, on Monday, was the tipping point for the players. A source described it as ‘bordering on inhumane’ while another spoke about the players’ anger at being ‘treated like children’. Both confirmed that such poor man management has been an outstanding feature of Mitchell’s reign.

Strauss has taken up the players’ cause with Lions president Kevin de Klerk, but it is already thought to be too late for Mitchell to redeem himself. There is a strong feeling within the squad that forwards coach and former Springbok Johan Ackermann would be the right short-term replacement.

However, with the Lions in a financial crisis it is unlikely that they will be able to afford to fire Mitchell. They will hope the New Zealander walks away without seeking compensation for early dismissal, or that he will be open to negotiating a fee that would suit both parties.

This latest incident simply deepens the troubles of the already embattled franchise. With the Kings guaranteed inclusion in Super Rugby in 2013, the Lions, who have won just two matches this season, face relegation.

Saru has insisted that a solution will be reached that won’t see any South African franchise relegated. However, the Cheetahs have already indicated they are not open to a merger, while Sanzar, the governing body that oversees Super Rugby and the Rugby Championship, has stressed that no additional team will be accommodated under the current format.

I have some sympathy with the competitive Mitchell. How come the Lions can beat the bulle and yet sit second from the bottom. No wonder Mitchell gets chipped with them. I would like to know if the traing has been harmful or beneficial. Seems to me Mitchell is trying to whip the oaks into shape so they can do better.

As for Sarfu they probably dont understand the maths of making 6=5. Hahahahahaha what a mess, how badly handled by these rank amateurs!

Seems he is picking up the same issues with the Lions that he had with the Force.

Mitchell does not  accept mediocrity it seems. Fact is the lions played superbly against the bulle and blew their cover. Mitchell knows they are not performing dispite injury problem. Mitchell also knows how desparate the times are.

Would a soft coach have got better results? at least under Mitchell they won the Currie Cup and also showed that despite injuries could beat the bulle. That to me represents a lot more success than the lions have enjoyed in recent years? Possibly the man mangement might be better but the desire to win is strong in Mitchell.

I didn't see that coming. The man is obviously a good coach, but people management is as much a part of coaching as "coaching" is. I'd hate to be a Lions player at the moment! Just on the inclusion of the Kings, here is some math's basics for you SARU...YOU CAN'T DIVIDE 5 BY 6!!!! It just gets to me how them bloody Watsons have managed to creep into Super Rugby through the political back door, and obviously it is gonna come at the expense of the Lions.

The real tradgedy is that if the Lions had not had all these injuries they would have had the best super comp season in many a year and the mood in the camp would have been completely different.

Mitchell is a good coach and fate has played him a rotten hand at the most inopportune time in the history of the franchise.

Beans, they have had bad luck. Injuries really did rob them of success this season, and ultimately, probably their participation in the competition from next year. The injuries early in the season probably caused all the negativity i nthe camp and unfortunately, negativity mostly brings out the worst in people, coaches and players alike. Add to that the pre-existing financial woes of the Lions union, and it is easy to understand why they aren't gelling as a unit.

I reallt didnt see that at all!

It always looked like Mitch and Josh had a good relationship.

The players spoke highly of him.

I personally, think Mitch is the right man to get the Lions out of their crap.

Pray / hope that a resolution is met!

Maybe Mitch just needs to calm down a bit.

was this written before or after keo had his line of snarf hahaha

the real story is the lions are in deep trouble in terms of money....thats the bottomline so they are trying to cut corners where they can. that being said i dont think cutting mitchell is the best answer. the managemant of the lions union and its structures needs to overhauled and that take a long time. for now they are in downward spiral and this is just a smoke screen to mask the fact that they have way bigger issues to worry about

I am sorry but what???

2011 - The Golden Lions Currie Cup title winning performance has earned them three awards in team of the year, Coach of the Year for John Mitchell and captain Josh Strauss was named Currie Cup Premier Division Player of the Year.

They haven't had a great super rugby tournament, but they have never had a good super rugby season that I can think of off the top of my head. So they having another sh*t showing and now they wan't to play the soccer game of blame the coach... get lost! this isn't u14's anymore man up do your job and then you won't get your ass handed to you at practice.

Would be nice if Lions won their remaining games apart from the one against ther Stormers. How the mood would change then.

But yes money is a big problem and they need a guy like Luyt back a the helm (A self made multi millionaire from a poor background). De kerk is doing what he can though but inherited a mess.

Shows what can happen to a once great union with complete twits at the helm. Dispite our current success due to Rassie's sterling work down here I am not sanguine re WP being top dogs for long unless we get quality at the top and stop the professional arm orever being milked. Corne Krige expessed his concern re WP management. This great rugby union will never reach its full potential until we are stong at the top.

Lions will have to fight thei way back and some times you have to reach rock bottom before rising from the ashes.

Beeno

In article quoted it souns very much like the Camp Staaldraad issue years ago - was it equal to that one of Straueli?  Hope not - but ist sounds if somebody was really peeved by it.

However, team performance is a key to survival of Coaches and when performance is not up to standard - the coach normally does not survive - so I would not bet on Mitchell survinving for long.   Ther eis also the issue of the Queens that could impact on the Lions and that would be another fiasco.   One thing is for sure - it would be another flop - taking into account the role of the Watsons in this case.   most likely end up last on the log next year.

So Mitchell is bound to go - but would it serve any purpose insofar as Super 15 is concerned?   The involvement of the Queens would not promote anything insofar as the standing of the fifth SA franchise is concerned - since selection of that team would be a joke comparable to the fiasco in team selection already in evidence insofar as the Springboks no `12 and the Junior Boks are concerned.    Like was said in another contribution - people in Engalnd find the lastest saga extremely funny.   It is not funny peculiar - it is funny ha-ha.

The Lions are 4th string SA team at best, the amazing achievement John managed with them last year will not be repeated.

John was was my favourite for SA coach this year, but hell if he is up for grabs let him come transform the Bulls.

Sounds like my NCO at the Navy Gym. Mitchell brought nothing new to the South African coaching scene. Sure the Lions won the lowly CC competition. But in the S15 they have looked considerably less innovative than the Cheetahs....who are coached by a hooker!

@bluebok hahahaha well that is why i am picless on this forum... i have been around quite a few years on here and would love to be here for a while.

@beeno WP is still being under the whip as a certain mnr thelo wakefield is in charge. he is the main reason to rassie being asked to resign. the biggest race obessed person i have ever met myself. as i have said on other posts the wp structures will fade over time as the players and rassies influence ways over time. WP is a ticking timebomb in there own right mark my words. the bulls sharks and cheetahs are well managed in my view. its just my personal view
