It is interesting to note that -


*  Stade Francais prefers Jules Plisson as their starting flyhalf; and


*  Morne Steyn is getting very little game time for the Club.


That could have been understood since during the Six-Nations Plisson was the first choice flyhalf for France - but it now appears he is in fact the third choice flyhalf after Tales and Michalak.


So where does it place Morne in the context of the SA Rugby scene.   What is clear is that Stade Francais found there are serious defects in Morne's game.  If that be the case is Morne a suitable Springbok flyhalf?


Looking at the scenario at present it is obvious that there will be a huge outcry if Meyer persists with Morne as SA flyhalf.   In the first instance he had relatively little game time for Statde Francais this year and he has done nothing of note to indicate that he is indeed suitbale to play as an international flyhalf.  


Bearing in mind the above it is now clear that Morne should have stayed with the Bulls - where his deficiencies were off-set by his kicking at goal,   In France that was not regarded as the alpha and omega of flyhalf performance requirements and that is why he really is not making any headway at Stade Francais.


It would be interesting to see what Meyer comes up with next - if he keeps on selecting Morne - one wonders how he can justify such a selection.

Clevermike: you have to admire M. Steyn's brilliance. 
He goes off to France to earn some cash & enjoy the fine French culture; makes sure he get's selected to play a few games to keep his world class skills sharp as a razor & to keep his brilliant reading of the game at the highest of levels. He will return to Bok rugby & reclaim his 10 jersey with no problem or debate from the bok faithful.
Sounds like a Hollywood movie script? No, just another illustration of the dominance a man on top of his game has in the second best rugby team on the planet
& the fair-minded kiwi said: " what about that other Steyn bloke?"

None of the two Steyns is any good - so Morne should stay in France and Francois be sent to Japan.

As I keep saying, the French see Morne for the bog ordinary rugby player that he is.

 

 

Morne should never have won a single Bok cap

Jantjies is better than Morne - at least Jantjies has a cap unlike you laugh of a call in Boshoff who will never smell a cap

If Pisson is no longer regarded as first choice by France, then Morne should be shiton by the Boks

 Agree - Plisson is not in the French squad for their tour to Australia and when the issue was raised by the Coach of Trihn-Duc - he implied that Plisson is ahead of T-D in the race to be in the squad.   Plisson was left out because they decided to go for Michalak as second flyhakf after Tales.

Any player that is selected from overseas must certainly be better than a local player, and that is not the case. Morne can only play rugby on the highveld behind a winning back, otherwise he is not up to standard.

Except for one small thing. Who was the Bok flyhalf when we cruised over France less than 6 months ago. Morne may not be a better choice at 10 than Fransie....but a bunch of loser Frogs aren't going to persuade me.  When I think of French sporting judgement I think of Jean van der Velde at the 18th at Carnoustie.

We just have to face it, Meyer is loyal to the players that he coached. Most coaches have their preferred players and will stick with them no matter how poor they are. 
John Mitchel - Carlos SpencerMallett - Skinstad, dropped TeichmanJake White - John SmitDe Villiers - John Smit, even though Bismark was the better hookerMeyer - Morne Steyn, Matfield, Du Preez, Jacque Fourie, Habanna
It doesn't matter how bad they are, they will always be favourid.
Habanna had a bad patch and Meyer refused to drop him, Morney lost form but stayed on at the cost of the game. 
So don't be supprise to the see the following names in the June test
Morne Steyn, Jacque Fourie, Victor Matfield, Hougaard, Du Preez

Nothing will convince you that both the Steyns are bloody poor and useless flyhalfs - but then you believe that a flyhalfs only real function is to kick at goal.   By the way both Steyns are poor in all other components of flyhalf play - it is hard to decide which of the two is worse, but I think Fransie takes the cake.

I think it is fair to say that any of the following Kiwi 10's would be in front of anything we have. Dan, Cruden, Barrett, Hickey or Anscombe. To add insult to injury Anscombe is only a makeshift 10.
As Mike has previously pointed out, our expectations of a 10 are completely wrong and this should highlight to our coaches that they are coaching out the little ball handling and decision making skills that any 10 may have (in SA), which is not much anyway.
I am really impressed, but not surprised, on how well Hickey has developed and taken his opportunities. Well done! If there was not so much talent in front of you, you would be set to haunt the SA backs, like your mates do every time SA-NZ sides meet. Rest assured, because we are so set in our ways and will refuse to see the light, you guys have got at least another 10 years of tormenting our sides. Have fun mate ! 
As a Bok supporter ask yourself (I will make the biggest mismatch here)
Hickey or Morne ?Anscombe or Boshoff ?Cruden or Jantjies ?Dan or Frans ?Barrett or Goosen ?Replace Lambie anywhere there and the Kiwis still come out tops.
Reality bites and it is a bit embarrassing.

If I have to rate the present Super 15 flyhalfs I would say the following:=
1 =  Barrett2 =  Cruden3 =  Foley4 =  Soopoaga5 =  Mootua6 =  Hickey7 =  Slade8 =  Ebersohn9 =  Hegarty10 =  Cooper11 =  Goosen12 =  Lambie13 =  Boshoff14 =  Pollard15 =  Potgieter16 =  Watts17 =  Jantjies18 =  Coleman19 =  Steyn20 =  Grant
Only 1 SA flyhalf in the top 10 and he does not play for an SA side.  Ebersohn improved beyond recognition because he is better coached than the SA coaches - with the possible exception of Naka - provides.
The top 4 SA flyhalfs showed some decision making abilities -  the rest must be told in advance what they have to do - they cannot read games and make decisions on the field of play and  have to be spoon fed by the coaches.   The do not even know when to kick or pass and consistently do the wrong things at the wrong times.
Steyn can move up to 16 if he takes two positive rugby decisions and make 1 line break today - but I do not believe he is capable of either since those would be the first time this season either of the two would happen.
