Morne Steyn/Meyer Axis @ Stade Francais. Steyn to retire after the 2019 World Cup

Lyon - Springbok flyhalf Morne Steyn has decided to stay at Stade Francais, rather than leave for relegated Brive, the Parisian club announced on Friday.

The 33-year-old had planned to leave for Brive, but Meyer suggested he opt to sign a one-year contract extension in the capital with the option of another year. "I wanted to finish my club career at Stade Francais Paris and that's now possible," Steyn said on the club website.

Steyn, who played 66 times for the Springboks, joined Stade in 2013 after a decade in Pretoria with the Bulls and Blue Bulls.

His former Springbok and Super rugby coach Heyneke Meyer is joining Stade as sporting director this summer.

"I think that in two years I will be old and it will be time to hang up my boots. I am still available for the 2019 world cup if needed". 

Yes, he always was. Some will miss him, others will miss putting the boot in when he's gone.

• He has won the Currie Cup twice with that province.
• He is the second highest leading points scorer in Super Rugby history – only behind the legendary Daniel Carter.
• Steyn also holds the record for drop goals in a Super Rugby season, the overall record and drop goals in a match.
• He is the leading point scorer in a Super Rugby season and has the records with most successful penalty kicks taken in a season.
• He is the second highest points scorer for the Boks, just behind Percy Montgomery. Their margins lie at 736 and 893. This is despite the fact that Steyn, in his 66 Tests, played a full 36 t ests fewer than Montgomery.

• Steyn holds the record for most points in a Tri-Nations match by an individual with 31. He as never attacked  a gain line - stood too deep in the pocket and  neutralized totally any backline he played in - could never read games and as a result his out-of-hand kicking was atrocious - his defense was a joke in bad taste. 

His only contribution ever was kicking at goal- but in crucial matches he missed those as well.   Any real flyhalf would enhance all aspects of play - not only goal kicking that covers your whole  list of attribute above.  

He managed to lose tests for SA - so much so that his buddy Meyer  was forced to drop him from the team (once in 2012 and twice in 2014).

Oom Maaik, Morne at his best was world-class.  It is clear from his achievements  ...31 points against the Allblacks  in one match says it all really.

Years ago when I lived in the Cape we could immediately identify Bellville drivers not only by their CY number plates but by the fluff on the cars dashboard, an orange on the aerial and monza exhausts....Bahahahahahahaha

Not only that they were the worst drivers in SA, if not in the world...probably on a par today with our township taxis....Hahahahaha.

Draad for every good game Steyn had before 2012 he had ten bad once since that date.   He went sour in 2012 and was sacked by Meyer, he was worse in 2014  and sacked twice by Meyer.   That one was always a good  kicking dummy - not a flyhalf at all.

In the 66 games he played for the Springboks he scored 7 tries - in the 124 Super Rugby games he played in he scored 11 tries.   All his other points came from conversions.   

The above prove that he never actually was a good all round flyhalf - very poor insofar a s predictability is concerned.   A flyhalf should be able to read the game - Morne never could.

It is truly amazing how this Mike chap has any traction on this forum. 10 out of 10 for volume of posts. Problem is most are duplicates and a large percentage of the rest are opinions with not much bearing on reality. Comic value only as far as I can see.
