Cape Town - Stade Français flyhalf Morné Steyn is ready to hang up his boots at international level to make way for Patrick Lambie and Handré Pollard.

The Springbok playmaker has run out 66 times for his country since making his international bow in 2009 against the British and Irish Lions.

But it appears the former Bulls star is now poised to retire from Test rugby, as he revealed in an interview with Midi Olympique on Tuesday.

"I'm saying now that I won't play for the Springboks anymore," he explained.

"The trips, the time away, all of it has become too much. And what is more back home, Handré Pollard is back from injury. He and Pat Lambie are very talented. It's time for them instead of me."

------------------

I doubt he was in the selection picture- but with Coetzee who knows. He was solid vs Australia, only to be woeful in the All Blacks game- and way off the pace of the game. He was dropped if I recall. He must have started the season in 4th place.

The calamity hand's of Jantjies- was even worse. Although he has always been terrible when playing under Coetzee as a coach.

Well Lambie was dropped after losing to Italy.....he is a calamity at flyhalf. Jantjies plays a high risk game, easily upset by a quick defence. And Pollard has been gone for a year with serious injuries and health issues. We are hardly set. But no doubt Morne is sick of it all. He steered us to victory over Oz and was blamed for a poor team performance against NZ.....time to leave a sinking ship. Good luck to him and true Bok fans will thank him for our victory over the Lions and our TN win in 09.

Morne used to annoy the hell outta me with his metronomic kicking and kinda boring play .But he suited the Boks style when they were actually winning and has been a good and faithful servant to Bok rugby ,the sometimes vicious criticism of him I find quite baffling at times .

A good time to bow out I reckon. I like him as a player and a person. The game has changed over the recent past and moved away from the rugby style which suited him, but before the rule changes he was highly successful. Good luck to him.

Just a question - according to you Lambie was a calamity at flyhalf and you mentioned the Italy test - the question remains - was Morne Steyn not a clamity in many more tests?
I have followed Morne for many years as a Bulls and Springbok player and also from time to time when he played for Stade Francais.   He was an extremely limited flyhalf - summed up suitably by Hansen - when in 2014 he sad the AB's knew exactly what to expect from Morne - so he was a real positive for opposing teams.   Definitely not a player thatwill be missed by the Springboks.
However - Morne always remains a gentleman and extremely nice person - so one has to wish him well for the future and thank I'm for all the conversions he kicked during games.

Fixed that for you.
If you think that he is such a nice person and a gentleman, then why spread lies and bullsht about him in the way that you have over the years?

Actually, he shall be regretted: an extremely limited fly half to play in an extremely limited squad. The benefit was obvious: SA players were no longer exposed in their shortcomings. They looked confident as they were not demanded more than their extremely limited skillsets offer.

This is important because the emergency for the SA squad lies in the looks.
SA rugby is loser rugby, it wont change.
The difference between one loser rugby and another is in the looks: some look good, the others dont.

Traditionalist, I have a suggestion for you.

Instead of typing up the same negative, repetitive and inarticulate garbage about excellent-men several times a day, every day of the week, why don't you rather just type it up once and then every time you feel the urge to say something, simply post something like "see my excellent men post" and leave it at that?

This will save you an enormous amount of typing and it will spare the rest of us from reading the same monotonous, unintelligible and racist rubbish in the vain hope of one day finding something meaningful or interesting in one of your comments.

I really do think this would be a win-win situation. Please consider it. Thanks.

TheTrad have you been in a situation where you brain was without oxygen for longer than 6 minutes? If so, how many times?
I really can't make sense of this guy! I keep expecting a massive light bulb moment...one where it suddenly all makes sense...but it never comes!

Morne is good at following the limited game plan which our coaches understand.
He is probably the best flyhalf we have playing a territory kicking game when behind a dominant pack.
The problem is our pack rarely dominates like they used to- given how poor we have become at the breakdown,
so unless we can use the backs more- we are going to lose even more often.
Unfortunately, our coaches just can't think past the first phase.
Playing Jantjies to play a game plan designed for Morne Steyn is a disaster.

@Traditionalist. South Africa was ranked number 2 in the world for most of the reign of Heineke Meyer. Not a bad achievement being 2nd to perhaps the best rugby team ever.  The Lions may have won Super Rugby last year if they sent the first team to argentina

 Read the question again. Slowly.
"If you think that he is such a nice person and a gentleman, then why spread lies and bullsht about him in the way that you have over the years?"

Nope Morne was not nearly as poor as Lambie. Lambie has started 13 matches at flyhalf and we won 7. Morne started in 61 tests and we won 39. Facts beat bullshyte

Morne was a serious deficiency as a flyhalf and even Meyer dropped him three times from selection - once in 2012 and twice in 2014.
Teams win games - not individuals and in the case of Morne he was poor in so many games that we should have won - but lost because of him
Morne was an excellent goal kicker - but it mostly relate to goal kicks from penalties.      In practice he contributed zero to the penalties received - in most cases were not the result of his positive performance - it mostly was caused by opponent mistakes or contribution by other Springbok players.

 SA also won WC.

That was in the past. The future is based on the failed transition to professionalism.

Coaches cant explain everything, it is a whole. If coaches are limited in their gameplan, that is because they work with limited players.

And a happy new year to you to ou ComradeMike. May your fingers turn into fish hooks and may tour balls start itching. May your wrists turn into arseholes and every time you eat, you crap in your bowl of porridge. Those are the nice ones. I am quite prepared to think of some really bad ones of you want to.
At least I don't dislike you enough to spread lies about you, like you have done with your two pet-hates.

It's all good Mike

Ceradyne is quite a decent chap in my opinion

It is frustrating though every now and again when he spoils a good argument with some decent facts, so I can understand the frustration

You just spoilt a good discussion with some excellent facts

Irrelevant facts are irrelevant.

Rankings rank. It does not tell more. There are a number one, a number two, a number three... That's rankings.

Example: Rugby rankings in Africa

Rank one: SA

Rank two: no idea of it

Rank three: no idea of it

But there are a number two, a number three...

Being ranked number two in Africa behind SA is just that: being ranked number 2.

Even if SA was ranked nulmber one in the world, being ranked number 2 in Africa wont tell more.

It does not tell who play winner rugby, who play loser rugby.

In the current times, only NZ plays winner rugby, the others play loser rugby.

Rankings will give a number one, a number two, a number three...

Even better, rankings might end with giving the number one spot to a nation playing loser rugby.

The rugby landscape is such there is NZ and the others. Ranking forcefully gives a number one, a number two, a number three.

Taking a look at other sports shows that the ranked number one does not always win tournaments.

Keeping to play rugby goes without a word for NZ: they play winning ways.

All the other nations face the same issue: finding reasons to keep playing while they have losing ways.

They wont win so what else could they use to justify playing rugby? Big nations have all taken measures except for SA.

SA can not field any reason to keep playing rugby.

The rank is not enough: being ranked number one in the world will not do it, just as being ranked number one in Africa does not do it.

Taking a look at France shows how much it is all about finding ways to support a team playing loser rugby.

Their rugby is all through a big overhaul to keep rugby going on.
They've changed their playstyle, not to win but to entertain.
Just like in SA, it is also about the priviledge to lose.
They've dropped the selection on merit, they are also looking at ways to decrease the number of foreigners playing in their league.

Both will play poorly on SA rugby. They send a negative message relatively to popularity.
SA is being reviled for dropping selection on merit.
France is being acclaimed.

This gives another reason to stop rugby in SA: when a member of a group is blamed for doing the same thing as what another is praised for, it is a strong signal to leave the group.
