While I have never been a fan, he was playing well for the Bulls and has a mountain of experience so given the coaching staff are reluctant to bring in new blood for reasons not worth the time of day - why did they not simply send an SOS to Morne to come out of retirement for one game and provide some security off the bench, especially considering the suspect selection of Frans to start at 10? Pretty obvious I’d say

As far as I know Morne has retired from Springbok Rugby and the Bulls have not used him for recent matches.    His contract with the Bulls ended at the end of June 2022 and he was according to a news media report "in negotiation with the Bulls for an extension of his contract.   I do not know whether his contract was in fact extended after June 2022.

Smit is at the moment the Bulls flyhalf and they also got Goosen on contract.    If his contract has been extended there is a small chance he may come into the Springbok squad - but I think his officially announced retirement from Springbok Rugby will be the deciding factor.   Some Bulls supporters could perhaps clarify it - but I do not think he played any rugby since June 2022.

This coaching group makes you fall back on not so favourite players.

Morne is actually still with the Bulls and played last Saturday off the bench against the lions. I think this would be his last season at 38.

Well, Johnny Sexton is pushing 37 and was the difference for Ireland in NZ. Even at his advance years still a massive impact.

So not too insane to bring in Morne Steyn, actually would suit the boks game play.

I think there is a protocol for professional players before you can come back. Something like 6 months or something. That is why Mayfield had to find first class games before he could be selected for the boks again

My call is for Morne as a one off not for any other games and it would not be my call, it’s the call the coaches should have made as they are too conservative to bring in a rookie so the only non rookie about is Morne I personally would have selected Libbok to start with Hendrikse on the bench to cover Fuck Frans and Morne

I hope Fransie can deliver. On of my all time favourite players, but a bit long in the tooth, but hope he can put an honest shift in

Agreed let’s hope he is ok. At least his lack of pace and agility will be less exposed at 10 than if he was playing a whole game at 12 or 15 Brilliant player in his day but that was nearly a decade ago

R&N,s lack of creating player depth is frightening.....here we are playing with old men, that has had there time....Jordan, Sacha, Kade and even Libbok is the future and they are left out in the cold....R&N has no vision and most probably while we are speaking, Rassie is planning his exit....as he is a guy that can help a struggling team, but not the Guy to keep us at the top....Sat will tell us if Fransie can last and help us further to win.

May not be match fit if he has retired. Huffing and puffing after 20 minutes won't help us.

What a fucking arse nugget... if the coaches won't throw rookies head first into a pile of shti then I want the oldest fucking hasbeen possible. If these coaches won't do either one they are too fucking conservative and shit. Fuck me Bilbo, you'd be an interesting coach. This fcuker would burn through players on his massive spreadsheet and leave a trail of broken bodies and scarred minds. Fucking love it!!! XD

Frans Steyn is still a good player. He offers good utility value, and useful in a time when 3 other flyhalfs are not available.
Steyn will be on the plane to the next world cup. This will give him some game time.
When an old player plays badly, their is always questions if they are past their best.
Like Vermuelen, he is slowly getting better - but his form is no where near where it was in say in the World Cup final when he got man of the match.
Verm uelen will also get a run off the bench, so hopefully he gets back into form.
