 Actually having spent 6 months on a frigate of the South African navy the life is very overrated. The best thing is the huge breakfast they give you when you put out to sea. The next best thing is the day you return to port and the third best thing is when they take you off the 12 to 4 am watch. Being an Ordinary Seaman, the very bottom of the totem pole on a navy ship, is to know the real face of class distinction. We did it at 18 years old, sometimes I wonder how. The most hair raising experience was getting into a fight with a permanent force chap doing lifebuoy sentry at the very stern of the ship in a tight outside passageway with a low guard rail. Fortunately we were both smart enough to fall on the deck....fall overboard and you were gone in the Atlantic. The next was getting into an epic storm coming out of East London harbour. I had but lost a picture of our companion ship with it's whole front half hanging over a huge water abyss. Not taken by me, I was assigned to the paint locker trying to not be desperately sick. And the worst part on an ongoing basis was some of the company. The guy whose hammock was slung next to mine was permanent force and never left the ship. Except on pay day when he went up town to find himself a woman for money....i doubt he had passed standard 5. Still seeing the desert off Namibia from the sea remains with me as does the response we got when the Navy was given the Freedom of the City in East London. Overall an experience best enjoyed in retrospect.
