According to the normal process the performances in every match played is evaluated and the outcome then tested against ticks given to every player, whereafter the best player per year is identified. This is done by four evaluators and they then combine their findings. Here is the outcome:- . Here are our teams for 2013: Super XV: 15. Ben Smith (Highlanders), 14. Frank Halai (Blues), 13. Liam Messam (Chiefs), 5. Brodie Retallick (Chiefs), 4. Pieter-Steph du Toit (Sharks), 3. Ben Afeaki (Chiefs), 2. Adriaan Strauss (Cheetahs), 1. Coenie Oosthuizen (Cheetahs). Quite a number of the SA players are disliked by many on the forum - Mozart especially hates any reference to players like Labuschagne and Oosthuizen - who made the overall team for all franchises involved and to those must be added in the SA conference team the names of Mvovo, Spies, Rhule. Saffex does not like some of the players as well. Those are Morne Steyn in the overall team and Juamdre Kruger and Franco van der Merwe in the Bok barometer team. I must say I have reservations about those as well. It must be borne in mind though that up until the past three weeks players like Carter did not stand out in their relevant positions and that accounts in a way why the one-dimensional Morne Steyn is in the team and not Dan Carter. Obviously there are some players like Etzebeth who had minimal game time that would have made the overall team as well as the SA franchises team, but he was excellent in the games played after his return. There are also players in the injury category who only plated three of four games in the whole season - like for instance Alberts - but in the main those players showed zero in the games they actually played in. Whether we like it or not on the whole the above players have been the top performers in their specific positions this year..

It’s a little strange to find no mention of De Villiers or Anscombe. Players like Barrett or O’Connor are also not mentioned.

Yet we find the useless Juandre Kruger listed as well as Messam who by rights hasn’t had the best of seasons.

No Sam Whitelock??? No Crockett?? No Fourie??

What the hell is Spies doing there??

Nah … I don’t agree with this list at all.

Cleancut I also have reservations about the list. I agree with you about Sam Whitelock - Rate him high as a lock and he definitely is better than Retallick. At least he should have been in the bench squad ahead of the useless Kruger. Crocket I would not pick for the second team prop for Witgatwortelfonetin. He is the player giving away penalties like it is unbelievable - I believe so far in Super 15 he gave away 26 penalties. You cannot have a penalty machine like him in any team. Messam had a dodgy Super 15 - he was poor in most games played and was poor in the French test as well - so how his name come forth is really a question. Thee are players miles better playing in 7 - where open side loosies play in Australia and New Zealand - who are miles better than him. Cane, Todd, George Smith - just to name a few. Fourie - where do you pick him? Only 6 would be possible and he did not play there regularly enough to be really in consideration for that position. Spies - great mistake in my opinion. Why Philip van der Walt is not the pick heaven only will knows and then there is Engelbrecht from the Kings as well. I would add to the list of reservations Jean De Villiers - who despite the poor flyhalfs he had to contend with had a very good Super 15, Probably the best of the players in that position this year. Other than some obvious mistakes as listed by you I think on the whole they got the real performers listed.

Yes you are right ... Fourie, as well as he's played at 6, where do you put him?? Not sure. Guess I didn't think that through.

Witgatwortelfonetin - hahahahaaaaa!!! That bad huh?? Is there even such a place?? Sounds ruddy awful. I've made a note of it as a place to avoid!!

I enjoy Crockett cause he's just so damn powerful. Didn't look at his penalty stats. If your info is true then ... well he deserves to be ignored.

Glad to see you mentioned Engelbrecht from the Kings. Crazy about this guy. I hope the Lions call him up.

Reckon the list we (this MB) can put together would probably be a better and a more accurate reflection of this season play. Vastly different.

Do me a favour Mike .. if we do put a list of players together, no matter how much Stupid Dave bitches .... puhleeeeeeeeassse .... do not chalk ol Hougat's name up.

Cleancut Witgatwortelfontein is a hamlet in Namaqualand. The "gatwortel" was for centuries years used in Namaqualand to make coffee. Ma would say to Pa - "Gaan praam die bok en ek maak gat vir ons" meaning "Go and milk the buck - I will make coffee for us. A bit crude it sounds like - since pram is an ancient term for a woman's breast and gat is something like a hole or a arsehole as well. This for people that really have no understanding of Afrikaans. There are numerous dialects in Afrikaans that is virtually undesipherable for most Afrikaans speaking people like the above Namaqualand one and the Griekwa one as well. Lets leave Witgatwortelfontein in peace - they just entered the 20th century and will take a hundred years to come through.

most selections i can understand except the following -

4 stephen du toit, IMO he didnt play enough games to warrant a selection in the team of the year, arrived late to the sharks spXV party and left early.

5 brodie retallick, was good, pretty impressive that he leads the tackle count again for a tight 5 forward for the 2nd year in a row, thats twice in two years. as decent as his workrate is, i would have sleected a few others ahead of him in the spXV

6 liam messam, the fact that the team has two blidside flankers in the starting team shows me that rugby nous is not the lab monkeys who chose this teams forte.
im guessing theyre saffas though and in messam apart from being poor, there was heaps of others who were much better, like todd, braid and gill.

8 keiran read, read was outstanding in some games, but average in others as well as missed a handful of games with injuries, mowen was the best 8 in the comp by miles.

9 will genia, IMO hes still the best halfback in the world, but 2013 was a year to forget for genia where after returning from injury he was well below his usual best.

10 morne steyn, he would make the 22, but carter would make it ahead of him, i dont agree with mikeys take that he was average early on, he was awesome in nearly all his matches and only very good in the rest.

11 digby ioane, like genia, hes the worlds best in his position, but 2013 was a bad year for the NZ born winger.
players like hosea gear, habana had muvh better seasons.

17 benn robinson, average at best, theres a whole wad of players u can pick over robinson.

18 jundre kruger, exactly the same as benn robinson

21 daniel carter, see comment regarding morne.

22 israel folau, he had a great season, seeing as how he played on the wing as well, i would bump him to 11, cos if he were to go head to head with ben smith, thats the only fullback battle he woiuld prob lose in a 2013 performance comparison battle.
