Is when Beaden Barrett denied Will Le Roux a what would  have been the Bok's crucial try, which probably would have given the Boks some sort of forward momentum and self belief to win the match.  But to make the matters worse, Barrett scored a sensational try for the ABs, which basically sealed the Boks fate, I'll never forget the disappointment.

I hope Meyer took note of that lad and put plans in place in order to effectively contain that young fella and prevent him from doing what he did to the Boks last year.

Jean overran the tackle and was blocked from attempting it....that meant Morne suddenly had to adjust.....he did keeping Barrett running laterally straight into JJ. Unlike the other two JJ had his arms wrapped around him and was too pap to make the tackle. Jean made an error of aggression.....JJ just made a pathetic tackle....those are the facts.

Ntanga,
I agree - was really impressed by him this year. Always found a way to make an impact. I think ball in hand Barrett is more of a threat right now than either Cruden or even Carter at this stage.
Carter is still miles ahead as the best defensive flyhalf in the world - some of the games for the Saders last year he was flat-out dominant - and always a Top 3 kicker with Halfpenny and Steyn, but seems to have lost a step or two on attack.
Cruden is a great flyhalf, rarely injured but not the most reliable kicker at goal - seems to have the occassional brain fart and shaky form -  and while he is a good distributor of the ball he doesn't seem to have the same overall X factor to affect games that Barrett does. It was impressive to see Barrett translate that on the international stage last year
Barrett is like that Great Dane puppy that is starting to grow into his paws. He's already got 8-10 kg's on Cruden and is only 22 so will be thickening out even more. Will be interesting to see how this season goes with those three and how the selections are made.

Mine's probably watching Bismarck's monstrous tackle on Carter, them going to TMO everyone can see it's a fair challenge and then seeing him get sent off anyway and just knowing that it wasn't going to be the Boks day.

nothing on an international level, but watching the crusaders forced to sit 4th on the table when they should have finished in their rightful place of 3rd was pretty bad.
it meant the crusaders had to face the chiefs twice in the semis, where it could have possibly been an all NZ final two years running.
wonder why the hundered of conspiracy theorists here never talk about that much.

regarding that barret tackle on le roux, cracker of a tackle, i thought le roux was in for sure.

ben smith not living up to the demands of the No13 was pretty sad to see. sad though cos i know he can live up to its requirements.

"Cruden is a great flyhalf . . ."
Can't agree, Oimatey. I think Cruden is a very overrated player.
The Kiwis are always banging on about this very slow, injury-prone and small little chappie but really, the only thing remarkable about him is the way he disappears in big games.
Barrett is another story altogether . . . he looks a real prospect and I suspect he'll be Carter's long-term replacement after Cruden gets exposed as a rather ordinary player and all the hype dies down.

My worst memory was when JJ isolated himself and got turned just before the half. You knew after the ensuing AB  try that the Boks chances of a win, let alone a RC clinching win, had dropped dramatically.

o remember a few calls on abs.com from folks saying that by the time carter hangs up his boots, barret will be the incumbent No10. i was one of many who quickly disagreed big time, as cruden in his first year at the chiefs was the best 10 in the comp easy.

i wouldnt be so quick to disagree this time round, but i still have cruden ahead of barret.

Sasu...you are a wise man...and would'nt be suprised to see Azza filling in as AB captain at some stage...not that bigger step up from his captaincy at the Chiefs...

Will also be interested to see how much game time Beauden Barret gets at 10 for the Canes as Marty Banks inclusion could change the whole dynamics with Barret moved to fullback...

Marty Banks to be the next No10 after Carter, Cruden and Barret you think?

Or will Benji get a look in there...

Either way i will be suprised if Tom Taylor gets too much more time in the AB jersey at 10 unless the Blues and Canes fail miserably this year...

Those Bok supporters wondering why Morne is still our flyhalf need look no further than the few posts above discussing the competition for the AB #10 jersey from a list of legitimate contenders. There is no such list of legitimate (keyword) contenders in SA rugby and thats not Meyer's fault. Lambie is the ONLY serious challenger and it was his for the taking after EOYT 2012 but his form in the following year's Super 15 was anything but convincing as his kicking in particular went to the dogs and his field play (as illustrated statistically numerous times) offered no clear advantage to Morne.
An accurate, consistent goal kicker applies so much pressure on the opposition. Anyone who has played the game can attest to that depressing feeling as the other flyhalf knocks them over from all around the park. It causes teams to be less aggressive, tentative, concerned with giving up penalties. In contrast, a miss brings an immediate sense of relief and optimism that you've been let off the hook and it just may be your day !
Which team would you rather play against?

@brycy,

"Sasu...you are a wise man...and would'nt be suprised to see Azza filling in as AB captain at some stage...not that bigger step up from his captaincy at the Chiefs..."
i hate the idea of flyhalves as captain, didnt even like it when carter was vice captain.
IMO flyhalf workload has enough on its plate without the added extra pressure which a captaincy always brings.

"Will also be interested to see how much game time Beauden Barret gets at 10 for the Canes as Marty Banks inclusion could change the whole dynamics with Barret moved to fullback..."
im a huge fan of marty banks, and i kind of wish he had gone to the highlanders where he would have gotten more gametime.
ive also been thinking a lot about barret moving to 15 for the hurricanes to give banks more gametime, but the hurricanes outside backs have alapati leiua, corey jane, julian savea, matt proctor and andre taylor, the hurricanes selection headaches for outsideback is pretty sore enough as it is.
cant help wondering how hammets going to screw this one up.

"Marty Banks to be the next No10 after Carter, Cruden and Barret you think?"
NZs All Black pecking order right now would IMO have to be,,,
1 d carter
2 a cruden
3 b barret
4 t taylor
5 c slade

after these 5 who all wore the All Blacks jersey in 2013, the likes of marty banks, benji, tyler blyendaal and ihaia west would all have to be in the mix.

it would be a brave man to bet against crudz taking over from carter, the time invested in him by the All Blacks and his performances for the All Blacks have all been a pass so far, but u never know what kind of a curve ball will get thrown into the mix in the rugby world.

"Or will Benji get a look in there..."
benji marshall is the one player who has the potential to break into the All Blacks in 2014, all the reports ive read about him are similar to the reports about folau this time last year.
if marshall is half as good in union as he was at his peak in league, i wouldnt be surprised to see him get a nod into the All Blacks, and thats even with haansen saying there was next to zero chances of any surprise new inclusions to the All Blacks between now and the 2015 RWC.

Sasu...moving forward in anticipation of the 2015 RWC i'm guessing Hansen will be looking closely at this years form players...

...and the Slades, the Taylors and a few other Cantabs will be getting their redundancy notices i'm sorry to say... Carter i'm hoping will be a good backup for Cruden and Barret if his body holds together for long enough...

...Marty Banks is from Cantab country i think so it's not like yr favourite team won't get a few reps when the new kids on the block take over though...

...you probably might think i was pushing the envelope a bit to say Cruden would make an awesome AB captain...but as the playmaker he already dictates what happens on the field and some people are just natural born leaders...

...this where i could write a book on how great Crudz is for the Chiefs and the All Blacks and how influential he has been for NZ rugby...consistently winning MVP awards since his under 20 days...

...he as already been a great leader and a massive influence on the success of the Chiefs not to mention AB successes. And he will thrive on the added responsibility.

As you say Rennie is the best Super XV coach around so if he makes someone captain then it is gunna be 100% the right call....

Absolute rubbish regarding the Barrett miss........Jean rushed and completely cocked it up, when you rush you have to make sure you get your man failing which you throw the defensive line out of alignment.

Barrett then headed between Morne and JJ......Morne being the inside defender, had the responsibility of tackling the man with ball in hand.......Morne as per usual went high with a pathetic attempt on Barrett

JJ who was covering wide had to re adjust and try make up for Morne's poor miss.......by adjusting and turning he was off balance and could only go high......he was not in a position to effect a good low tackle.

JJ was the least to blame of the 3 defenders and that is a fact.......ask any coach who knows what he is talking about.

You don't rush and miss your man and the inside defender has the responsibility of tackling the man with ball in hand - rugby basics

@brycy,

"Sasu...moving forward in anticipation of the 2015 RWC i'm guessing Hansen will be looking closely at this years form players..."
hmmmmmmm, naybe, but hansen did say there was going to be no more real newbies in the All blacks mix, meaning the the best NZ players we have seen the last two years will be it, and only a real huge shocker shite season from any of them is going to change, and i mean shocker like weepu in the 2012 spXV.

"...and the Slades, the Taylors and a few other Cantabs will be getting their redundancy notices i'm sorry to say... Carter"
slade, yes.
taylor, no.
taylor was awesome on his debut, especially under all that pressure. hes also a better goal kicker than cruden (though i will need to confirm this), or at least from what ive seen from ITM up.
he laso has a better all round kicking game too
but taylor has the utility factor that crudz simply dosent have, 12 and 15??? phewwww, thats sick bro, even trumps barrets 10/15 utility prowess.

"Carter i'm hoping will be a good backup for Cruden and Barret if his body holds together for long enough..."
if ur going to hope for something, than hope for something that might actually happen.
when carters fit, hes No1 period. this status is subject for review after the 2015 RWC and not a moment earlier.

"...you probably might think i was pushing the envelope a bit to say Cruden would make an awesome AB captain...
if crudz was still a hurricane, would i have a different opinion???
would both of us???
LMAO,

but as the playmaker he already dictates what happens on the field and some people are just natural born leaders..."

but as a playmaker, he only really dictates what happens with the backline.

some people are natuiral born leaders though, and thats something i would never use to describe crudz who ive been following since his u20 days.

"As you say Rennie is the best Super XV coach around so if he makes someone captain then it is gunna be 100% the right call...."
dont forget hes a co-captain.
crudz captaining the chief is all part of that leadership group thing which is so popular these days.
messam is the real captain.
crudz to messam, is like what messam was to clarke. clarke and messam may have both been co-captains the last two years, but we all know that clarke was the No1 captain, just like we all know messam is the No1 captain now, regardless of the co.

PS Before one of the brightspark Kiwis starts waxing about this Marty Banks chap - who I've never seen but who can't be that much chop if he left NZ to go play in Russia - he's somewhere between Stephen Brett and Daylight on the Rooinek rankings . . . for now! I'll wait and see if he lives up to all the pre-season hype.

@rooy,

LMFAO,

how do u know of ihaia and not marty banks???

ur in for a treat rooy, marty has saffa goal kicking boots and speed to boot.

some of my highlight moments was the 60m goal kick he made, who needs to be waaaay above sea level??? not banks.

mutliple 80 and 90 meter trys out gassing household names like guilford and veainu.

i think u will be very happy with banks, if barret plays heaps of games at fullback in 2014, banks wil be in all my fantrasy teams easy peasy, :o)

Sasu....sounds like the locals are still having nightmares about Ellis Park...so all in all a great thread to torment our friends abit longer with...

...couple of points i have to pull you up on though mate...

..it is Cruden that has taken over from Craig Clark as Messam is not much of a talker so Cruden will be the one doing all the talking to the ref...

...makes sense though to have a leader in the forwards and one for the backs if you think about..another master stroke from Rennie..he knows his stuff and has also been following Crudz since his under 20 days - he was the coach of that team too remember..

...and Cruden has captained both his teams previous to the Chiefs..the under 20s and Manawatu so sounds like a natural born leader to me..

... you're saying Taylors kicking stats are better than Crudens or are you saying he has a better kicking game...based on what - lost me with that one too buddy...

..regardless Taylor's debut for the ABs was an enforced change due to injuries and he will have to have a blinder this Super Xv or Benji / Marty Banks could be in....

...i know Hansen was mates with his dad Warwick..not saying he's a bad player- just there is so much competition and no room for sentimental favourites...

....Hansen said there will be no more real newbies - first i heard of it and still 2 seasons to go before the WC is'nt it?

I would hope dopey Hansen would be more open minded than that...especially considering we have no fixed center,  and given the attrition rate of top class rugby players there's bound to be a few changes and new faces...

Aaron Cruden has always been a great leader, but now it's part of his job description.

The Chiefs first-five will be one of the two-time defending Super Rugby champions' co-captains this season, alongside fellow All Black Liam Messam.

He takes over from Craig Clarke, who has left the franchise and is plying his trade in Europe.

"It's a challenge that I'm going to really look forward to throughout the season and hopefully bring my own style to it," Cruden said.

"I don't mind speaking to the referee as a 10. I always try and get in the referee's ear anyway, so now it gives me a bit of a licence to go up and have a chat."

Co-captain Messam lets his actions do the talking on the field, and used to let Clarke do the talking on and off the field last year.

The loose forward has always been good at avoiding public speaking with the team, and Cruden doesn't mind stepping up to fill the gap Clarke leaves.

"He's already said that to me actually," Cruden said. "He does like let his actions do the speaking for him, and he's done that extremely well over the last few years.

"As a 10, I think you're always vocal, but we'll just bounce a few ideas off each other. If Liam's comfortable going to talk to the referee about maybe more things that refer to the forwards, then I'm happy for him to do that.

"And if he wants me to do the same if the referee has a problem with some of the backline stuff that's going on."

Chiefs coach Dave Rennie said Cruden was the obvious choice for the co-captaincy, and said he was already a leader in the team.

"He leads regardless. He's part of our leadership group, and as a 10 he's got to implement all of our structures and he does a great job in that regard.

"He's highly respected and we've got a lot of confidence in him. In the end, he's got a 'C' next to his name, but he does that job regardless.

"He's captained the New Zealand 20s to a world title when he was a young fella, the following year he captained Manawatu for a handful of games when the regular skipper was injured.

"It fits him easily. He talks well and leads from the front. We're confident he'll do a good job."

Cruden has only been back in camp since Monday last week, but Rennie said he had already made a big difference to the squad.

The 25-year-old played under Rennie at Manawatu and the New Zealand Under-20s, and said it was good to have the faith of his coaches.

"It's always nice to know that your coaches have a lot of faith in you, and they have a lot of faith in all of the guys involved here.

"For me, it was really nice when Renns gave me the call and asked if I'd like to do the job. It's something I'm pretty proud of."

While he has learned plenty from other leaders in teams he has played for, Cruden said he would have his own style of leadership.

That would be a mixture of his actions in games and training, as well as his chatter on the field.

Cruden will likely get his first chance to lead the side when the Chiefs play the Reds in a pre-season fixture this weekend in Australia.
