Get ready to roll out the red carpet for Nabo Sokoyi, the globe-trotting rugby sensation making his debut as a Blitzbok at the upcoming Cape Town Sevens. After racking up air miles and rugby caps from the Netherlands to the USA and beyond, Sokoyi’s journey reads more like an adventure novel than a sports career. Born in Upington, raised in Bloemfontein, and having chased the oval ball across continents, he’s finally set to shine on his home stage.

Sokoyi, a 24-year-old dynamo, has had a whirlwind path back to the Blitzboks squad, having bounced from country to country, including stints in England, Russia, and France. His rugby odyssey began in earnest when his contract wasn’t renewed a few years back in Stellenbosch. But, as fate would have it, his globe-trotting has prepared him well for his upcoming debut. "All those trips suddenly made sense and today, when I got my jersey, a massive relief come over me," Sokoyi reflected. The emotional weight of his journey culminated in a poignant moment during the captain's training session where Selvyn Davids, a mentor and friend, presented him with his training jersey.

"One day he just told me that I need to understand what I can achieve when I put my mind to doing the right things. Even when I was abroad, I could contact him for advice, so I owe a lot of this to him."

Sokoyi’s international experience isn’t just about personal growth; it’s strategic too. Having played with and against many of his upcoming opponents in various international tournaments, he feels a unique sense of familiarity and readiness. “Most of the guys in Great Britain’s team played with me in tournaments in Scotland and England and obviously a number of French guys and two players from Argentina that played in the French league – in a way, I feel at home,” he shared with a knowing smile.

As the Blitzboks gear up to face Fiji, New Zealand, and Great Britain in Pool A, Sokoyi is buzzing to contribute to the team’s success and help defend their title. The squad, still smarting from their performance in Dubai last week, is all pumped to turn the tide in Cape Town. The team rallying around includes Christie Grobbelaar, Ryan Oosthuizen, Impi Visser (c), Zain Davids, Ricardo Duarttee, Ronald Brown, Selvyn Davids, Nabo Sokoyi, Shilton van Wyk, Donavan Don, David Brits, Zander Reynders, and Tristan Leyds.

With fixtures lined up against some of the toughest teams in the circuit, Sokoyi’s debut is set to be a spectacle of high stakes and higher hopes. Tune in on Saturday, 6 December, as the Blitzboks tackle Fiji at 12:44 pm, New Zealand at 4 pm, and Great Britain at 7:41 pm. This is more than just another tournament for Sokoyi; it's a homecoming and perhaps, a new beginning.
