New race quotas for SA rugby

Cape Town - The South African Rugby Union (SARU) will introduce a new quota system in domestic rugby from next year in an attempt to see more black talent emerge.

According to a report on Die Burger's website, this new rule will apply in next year's Vodacom Cup competition.

Teams will be forced to field seven players of colour in their 22-man squads, with at least five players in the starting team. At least two of the seven will also have to be among the forwards.

SARU CEO Oregan Hoskins hopes the new rule will help see the emergence of more black talent through to Super Rugby, Currie Cup and national levels.

"The feeling within our organisation is that we had to step in to see more black players come through. The provinces also shared our views," said Hoskins.

"To have certain targets will show that SARU is committed towards transformation. The Vodacom Cup is of critical importance to development and it has moved away from its primary aim to provide opportunities to promising young players, especially those of colour.

"The aim is to enlarge the pool of players of colour from which Currie Cup and Super Rugby coaches can pick. Hopefully, it would then also give the Springbok coach more options," continued Hoskins.

HAVE YOUR SAY: How do you feel about this new quota rule by SARU. Is it fair on aspiring

Selection by merit, not by colour of someone skin is the key going forward for the SA rugby in general. There has to be a talent on an individual to deserve selection for any professional sport.

One thing that may be pertinent to this discussion that applies to all races, is why does all the rugby talent in South Africa come from so few schools?

Greys College and Greys School (forget which one is in PE and which one is in Bloemfontein) seem to produce the majority of future Springboks.

Natal produce so few Springboks and of these most are from MichaelHouse.

Is this coaching or what?  It seems the problem may start at school level and is actually applicable to some degree to all races.

Sorry there sharkbok you beat me to the post by seconds.

This is a blatently racist approach - but there are so many examples of this rubbish here in Sa and it is severely and negatively impacting SA. Sooner the thieving, inefficient and racist anc are voted out the better for all.

I thought that we were past this. We allready have black talent knocking on the door. The Sharks fielded an all black back trio. They even produced Terror Mtembu who outplayed Kankowski from the back of the scrum but  are injured at the moment.

The Griquas have at least 5 players of colour in their curry cup team. So I don't know what the problem is?

I f'en hate origin horse foreskin, the guy is so useless. Kick quotas out of rugby.

First of all they place any non white person as one group thus not respecting their difference in culture and influences.

How can you enforce the same number to all unions where The Tswana and Sotho as well as ZUlu do not give a fuck about rugby hence why the biggest football teams are in the gauteng province. If they really wanted black people to play rugby then why do they kick the Lions out of SR who have twice the amount of black africans than the Eastern Cape?

Aah so they have noticed it that the Xhosa people due to their influences over the 100 years with the British and Afrikaners are the main black african group that plays rugby?

Majority of Xhosa speakers, approximately 5.3 million, lived in the Eastern Cape, followed by the Western Cape (approximately 1 million), Gauteng (671,045), the Free State (246,192), KwaZulu-Natal (219,826), North West (214,461), Mpumalanga (46,553), the Northern Cape (51,228), and Limpopo (14,225).

WP have the cape colored so it won't have a problem fielding 5 but how are the Bulls going to develop in their region where the Xhosa is is less than a million?

Bulls sits with illegal aliens who took advantage of slack border control to run into SA and decalred themselves some SA tribe and took a bunch of languages and made their own. There is a reason why Northern Sotho is not a written language and why the Limpopo Province have only 36 percent of its population have some sort of secondary education. Because tha numbers are mostly white people.

The goverment wants black people to play rugby but they do not want them to go to school for free. They do not want to pump money into schools so there is better coaching. They want the unions to do that but the school belongs to the state and are their responsibility. So its clever. Making privately owned business pay for a thing they suppose to do thus saving millions to go spend on ZUma's house or something.

The Sharks have the biggest black population in the country yet they have to go to the Eastern Cape to find players.

What happens. A person from a disadvantage group suddenly sees a opportunity of making  a quick buck as well as receiving a education and gets a bursary from a top school. He plays well make the SA schools team only to be found out that he is a 22 year old that is good enough to play against 16/17 year old kids.

Then it happened with the football where a 25 year old from PE Uni pretended he was 13 and won the U/13 world cup. In African football it happened all over with Nigeria and Ghana dominating youth tournaments until FIFA introduced age tests. Suddenly Nigeria and other teams were nowhere to be seen.

Eastern cape three quarters do not own a ID nor any prrof of birth. If agents come who is not going to take advantage? I would.

THen height equals genes and nutriction.

Average size of 1,66m its easy to see why most of them dissapear when they get out of school. Rugby is survival of the fittest and size mismatches and playing players out of their depth is dangerous. Just ask Max Bruto

What a pathetic racist policy. Do these ignorant wankers not realise that the reason no black players are coming through is because they don't exist? It is now 2013 for goodness sake, we are 18 years into bloody equality in SA and we still want to introduce a quota system. Just like black guys are far better sprinters, maybe the world should wake up to the fact that in general rugby better suites White and Polynesian raced players. This latest racist policy will further fuel the exodus of our young talent. Its about time these policies were challenged on human rights grounds

@ Redsman, yeah limit number of kiwi's coming to Oz, that'll be the death knell for Australian rugby. As to the quota for decades there was a cry to leave politics out of sport, some things never change...agreed that this is detrimental to SA rugby, select on merit should be the catch cry.

I didn't say anything about rugby playing kiwis who want to play for the reds or wobs if they're good enough..... How's Kerr Barlow going by the way or Ben & owen franks anyway ? We'd leave the islands open though as most good kiwi rugby players come from there anyway.... Hahahahahahahhahahahhahah

but seriously ditto everyone else on this topic... If you are  good enough shouldn't matter what color you are....

That prejudice is never going away.  Here in the US where there is more upward mobility than anyplace I have seen and there was never any apartheid and it has been 50 years since the civil rights movement their supreme court just ruled that it is OK to base university admissions on race. Here the civil rights movement has become an industry - the leaders are wealthy professional race-baiters who have made it a way of income, not a cause. Any black person that doesn't toe the party line is labelled an Uncle Tom. A far cry from MLK.

Sorry boys it is there to stay and will only get more entrenched.

The government would not be putting pressure on SARU if the standard of rugby was the same as the standard of football.

With South Africa currently in 2nd place in the world rankings and in the limelight, and the Vodacom in the media it is a good oppertunity to get some more votes from a BEEE policy.

What should really be done is for schools to recieve governement funding so that the coaching is improved across more schools, instead of relying on so few schools to be the feeder system of furture Boks

Well said Spoony. Well Said.

What matters is that Boks is probably one of the most successful sporting teams to represent SA. We have a real good chance of becoming number 1 with on NZ to beat. Why on earth do you want to destroy it.

What about the swimming team, are you going to stop Le Closs and Schoeman from swimming becauser there are no black people?

I think that we have seen some fantastic players come through, but at the moment Rugby is mainly played by whites.

For me, as long as nobody is discrimanated against because of colour is what matters to me.

 well put spoony and kingcorn!

Horrible decision, indeed a very sad day for SA Rugby.

The IRB should take a strong position against this ruling.

IRB should maybe even take (it pains me to say) action against SARU...

I am a WP supporter and hate those fuckers in Pretoria but you got to feel for them. They have only 9000 kids all age groups combined that plays rugby. Radepele school fees were paid by John Smit who sponsored him as a old boy.

Btw this quota selections were introduced in the Craven week and other levels. The parents just shaked their heads. That is also reason why the Bulls were so pathetic as well as the Freestate. With that WP going to win the Craven week year by year
