SHARKS v MELBOURNE REBELS (Durban, Saturday 5:05pm)

There’s a new theory doing the rounds. The Sharks aren’t disadvantaged as much by having to play in the humid conditions they encounter on match day as they are by having to train in those conditions. It’s a theory that was first peddled by Laurie Mains some years back, and it may have merit given that the Sharks always look so lethargic at this time of the year and yet tend to be sharp and play a more running game when a) they go on tour or b) the later stages of the season, and the first signs of winter, arrive. Whatever the reasons, the Sharks are under pressure to produce this weekend, and coach John Plumtree has done the right thing by making changes that have sent out the unambiguous message that no player has a guaranteed place in the team regardless of performance.
