In the past we always had a tendency where -
* a few members support the election of pklayers based on age and reputation - without any regard to performance; and
* others who believe that age and reputation is only a norm when it is accompanied by proven performance.
Another noticeable deviation is iro performance by NH club players. We always remember how blatantly unfit club players are when called up to play for the Springboks. We all remember the case of Frans Steyn - who came back from Europe in 2012 in shocking physical condition and how poor he was since then. He came back last year to play from the bench. The fact was he was grossly unfit and when he followed up on a kicked ball he was out of breath after running about 50 meters,
There have been other club players who failed in the period 2015 to 2017 as well and those included W Alberts, Morne Steyn and all the misfits in Meyer's WC squad,
There has been other cases as well - so the insistence that players like Vermeulen should only be considered for selection if he proves that he still qualify for such selection this year. After all his stint at Toulon did not cover him in glory.
Personally I am not opposed to the selection of NH Club players - but those should be strictly limited since it is not possible to really assess their performances based on club games and there is always a problem with integrating the players into the squad since there is no real possibility to get them into the system befo re test matches. For that reason there should be indisputable reason for such selection.
At this stage I think that there may be only one or two players to be considered and th only one I consider as a candidate is Le Roux.
