So many names......Kriel, JJ, Allende, Goosen, Lambie, Faf, Coenie, Stephanie and many many more. Touted by red faced groupies who in the same breath tell you existing incumbents are over the hill. But the truth is, since the 2011 WC only three players with real test match gravitas have emerged, Etzebeth, Marx and Willie. None of the rest would even make the Pom team and Willie has regressed from his early promise. So it would be nice if we could just get a bit of maturity, a little less hysteria....a bit of wisdom. Hold on there goes Gelant.....for sure he has to be the one. Right?

1.Kriel- played out of position. Not physical enough for centre. Would be much better on the wing or at fullback with the extra space. Probably a better option than Coetzee who has gotten worse as the season progressed. His now predictable step is easy to fend against.

2. JJ - Ditto played out of position. Not physical enough for centre. Would be a good finisher on the wing, but could be a disaster under the high ball.

3. Goosen  - Ditto-  played out of position as a utility player- and was ruined. Should have had more game time. It is a pity he spent much of his career overseas- otherwise, he would have more game time.

4. Allende. Completely lost the plot. Needs to find another sport. He started as the next Sonny Bill - with his offloads and dominant crash ball. Defence fell apart, and he got worse from there.

5. Lambie: Average.

6. Faf: Started well- but fell apart. His pass is not the best. Many of our scrum-halves these days are like small wings that have limited passing.

7. Coenie: Had a very good season as the tighthead. Very physical and effective at the base of the ruck- and in loose play. His best season since becoming a tighthead prop. Unfortunate to pick up 2 injuries this season- but fortunately not neck related.

8 Stephanie- One of the most consistent Boks in the last 2 years.

I would indeed ne nice if players are selected on performance and merit, which became a rarity under Meyer and a really serious deficiency under Coetzee.

The final BS is selection on the basis of reputation - a real norm under Meyer and  supported by Mozart.     The list of players who over the years let down the Springboks badly is long and to concentrate on the players listed by Mozart is ridiculous,

Some of the above failed because of coaching deficiency and farcical game plans they were forced to play,    They got into a rut and it would require serious adjustments to make them into real rugby players again.   Others have had deficiencies already when selected and those will  not be going away.

Those harking back t the past and then try and motivate that their favourite players to be called back is missing the boat completely is just not going to work.   After nine years of no real player development to allow for proper team development the Springbok team is in urgent need for rebuilding and development into a proper team again and tat is the real task in future the powers to be should concentrate on.

The biggest farce is concentrating on Mozart's list of pet hates - when he supports non-performers like Fransie Steyn and used to support Morne and De Jongh in the past.

Oh dear they weren’t played in their preferred position. Pity they didn’t consult with Montgomery , Snyman, Danie Rossouw....or international stars like Itoje, Larkham, Carter or Owen Farrell all of whom moved effortlessly between positions. Face it we have plunged from 2nd to 5th since we started selecting flavour of the day players. But of course that was entirely predictable.

Absolutely, that's not even worth debating...with what we have endured with as far as national coaching over the past few years from PDV through HM and now this clown...not an iota of hope in hades...forget about the individual players, a really good coach has been proven time and time again that he can take even a mediocre side with commitment and direction to heights...it's been done throughout rugby history....this augument is bland and is putting the cart before the horse. You can prattle on and on about this player and that player but it's all in vain until we get EVERYTHING in order from administration and coaching....then we can put a good side together with performing players, that has clear direction...this is NOT an excuse but very obvious and clear...the trouble with us is that we are blinded and delusional by our great past, oh yes when was that...such a long time ago. Talk about getting our priorities right

Mozart

We plunged to 6 under Meyer when he played the most capped team ever after the Japan disaster in 2015.   The Coetzee disaster years were also utterly predictable after years of non-renewal of the team by Meyer.

Instead of making positive contributions on site as to where positive adjustments need to be made and being objective - you are making negative players iro of your pet hate players.   Get a life.

My personal view is that we are introducing players with a lot of potential too early to Super Rugby. I have just been looking at the next crop of up and coming players and they all seem to be under 21.

These guys has no time to find there feet and learn how to compete for a spot. The seem to look good in Currie Cup and some degree in Super Rugby, but once they get exposed to test rugby, there complete get destroyed.

Schalc Burger even commented that he thinks the players are to young and said even a player like him had to wait behind some of the more senior guys.

That all boils down to our players in their prime heading to Europe. It all trickles down eventually.

Our Provinces are a bunch of elected amateurs that should not be near a professional team.

Our franchises / super rugby teams have once again become curry cup teams.

We have to many small provinces sucking on the teat and to much influence and power in national selections.

SARU is still pushing for more franchises in various competitions, We have now 3 International competitions for teams to play in. Super Rugby, Pro 14 and Parker Challenge cup or something.

We need to copy and edit NZ model and centralise our players contracts, remove ownership of the super rugby teams by reducing each provinces stake in a franchise.

e.g. WP should not be running the stormers or hold onto all the players. Stormers should move to Cape Town Stadium, 50% owned by 3 provinces with equal share. Boland, SWD and WP.

The other 50% should be offered up to private investors such as Remgro that has more say.

Super rugby is for Super rugby franchises only.

Professional players should be allocated to franchises of their choice or have some form of Draft system.

The Provinces will still have their chance to compete in a 2 tier curry cup comp that runs for 5 months only.

That way, professional players with central contracts and that have not been selected for national duty can go back to original provinces with the home comforts around them and the players they grew up playing with.

Easy answer - just go through the Japan 2015 test side and you ,at get the answer.  Meyer had no game plan other than the kick and chase game.   In that he did not differ  much from Coetzee.

Remember Meyer's selection basis?    Reputation - while performance counted for nothing.    .

We have seen this before from most, or just about all Bok coaches.  The more pressure they are under, the more they revert to a one-dimensional game plan of kick and chase or 10 man rugby.
Meyer or Willie Leroux made the Boks more expansive over time, only to revert to kick and chase when the pressure built from the 2014 EOY tour, then the loss to Argentina and finally Japan.
Schalk played more often at flyhalf after the loss to Argentina and things got worse after the loss to Japan, where Matfield would have been at centre had he not got injured.
If the gameplan is to play kick and chase- or just 10 man rugby, Morne Steyn is probably our best flyhalf for this type of game. His kicking is more accurate and allows more pressure on the up and under. Morne Steyn also gains more metres with touch finders and gets the Boks on the front foot. He knows how to kick into space for an effective territorial game.
Naas Botha was the best 10 man rugby flyhalf ever, although he did have skills for some 15 man rugby as well.

When your opponents have better talent from 12 through 15, making it a contest of outside backs is self defeating. HM did the rational thing.

in 2013- 2015  Habana, Willie Leroux, JP Pieterson are better outside backs than Japan, or even for most countries. Jean also at least until around 2014 before his last injury before the world cup, and Frans Steyn was also solid. Jan Serfontein is not a world beater but he is a top-notch defender.

The Boks can score tries with quick ball- especially the players above.

South Africa loose forwards have fallen behind in ball retention and recovery. This was the main reason for the game falling apart against the Japanese. Sometimes the Boks were trying to go wide from slow ball, because the Japanese, Argentina and co were slowing the breakdown of the Boks.,

Then Meyer ordered the team to not move the ball wide- even on quick-ball.

Morne Steyn was not on the pitch, so Schalk moved to 10 and ruined many of the best opportunities to go wide. The offloads of Schalk stopped- and he went to the ground each time to slow the game down at the orders of Meyer.

Slow ball is better to play 10 man rugby, just kicking and carrying the ball up to get penalties. Quick ruck ball is about gaps by running, passing or kicking into space.

The game against Japan was a simple case of not being up for the game. Sure Jean and Habana were terrific....and they scored tons of backline tries. Our current situation is different ....Steppie is a slug, Allende a mental mess, Skosan and Lleyds flimsy......we can’t win with those guys. Nor is Combrink any better, too slow. Only Rohan has the ability to test defences but his own defence is poor. If that’s the best we have HM’s approach was spot on and failed because of poor execution like Lomp’s pathetic tackle attempt on Keino and Allende’s failure to close the space for the second AB try in the WC semi. If HM erred it was relying on two awful centres like Kriel and Allende and selecting Lomp ahead of Matfield. That’s what the fans wanted, but it should have been resisted.

I would agree with the current backline, having a flyhalf that is good at 10 man rugby could deliver more consistent results. Especially if Stephanie is playing as a loose forward. Win scrums and lineouts, and get penalties within range of the poles.
Jantjies is better at 15 man rugby but he needs fast ruck ball, and multi-phase play

The centres are a total disaster at the moment, so it is not clear if the form of Jantjies is being affected by this or just helping to cause this.
It was desperate measures playing Francious Venter the flat track bully against the Minnows but hopelessly lost in a competitive game.
Delande is so out of form, it is a mystery that he was a good rugby player a few years ago.Jan Simpletein is a pale shadow of an inform Jean Devilliers. Rohan would be a better like for like replacement,

So the test losses from November 2014  to the Japan game made no impact on your closed mind.

By the way everybody realized that there was a deterioration in rugby - but unlike you most observers look for the real reasons for the downward spiral.

The reasons in the main go back to the Meyer years and  made worse by BS selections by Coetzee.  This - coupled with an absent game plan by both - has had disastrous consequences.

Both coaches failed miserably - whether you like it or not.

Mozart

If you look at what I wrote you should realize that the loss against Japan was preceded by losses against Ireland and Wales November/.December 2014 and a full house of losses in the Rugby Championship - inclusive of the first ever loss against Argentina at home/

Since the Wales loss in 2014 - the Springboks sole win against any team was a warm-up game playing the Argentinian "B" team before the first WC game against Japan - also a loss,

The only conclusion one could reach was that the team was in serious decline and it would be foolish to think otherwise.

Be it as it may the Japan loss caused a panicky \Meyer to get rid of the elderly duds in the team  and Matfield ended up on the bench, while Pienaar was never played again.    Matter of fact Matfield was so poor he caused a major turnaround in the semi-final through sheer stupidity when he came from the bench - were he never should have been.

Meyer's main problem through his coaching of the Springboks was his total inability to understand a proper game plan and his bs selections based on reputation with zero regar d to performance..

If you want to go that route also preceded by beating Australia, England and the All Blacks and followed by beating Scotland, Wales and Argentina....getting the WC bronze medal and enjoying number 2 in the world. Since then the newbies you have always wanted have been picked and we have plunged to 5th. HM was a perfectly competent coach, coaching when our great team was on it’s last legs.....but the newbie alternatives you were howling for were non test calibre and have all flopped. Having Meyer's record in 2015  was a disaster bar a few games in the WC and the Broinzwe win against the Argentina "B" team is not a recovery to be proud of.

Meyer a competent coach?   Without a proper game plan and a total addiction to shit selections his  record is nothing to be proud of,

The loss against Japan was a  clear indication that he was a coaching failure and a selection disaster.

All of them was not test standard anymore and De Villiers was poor after his injury,    Matfoeld was a joke in bad taste and  most of them could not make the starting line-up ever,

So their selection by Meyer was not BS?   How many other similar selections occurred  in the Meyer era?

Who did Meyer ignore - the worthy players in the Lions team to start with and that includes Marx, Vorster, Van Rensburg, Combrinck and Kriel.    However, that is not the whole list - there are many other players Meyer under-used or ignored in the four years he was a coach, basically because they played thinking rugby - not the junk Myer used as a game plan.

But the pestilence in thinking is clear - over a period of four seasons onl y the WC semi counted and that was a disaster for Meyer as well,    Could have been otherwise - but Matfield buggered up badly twice when he came from the bench.

No Mozart

Kriel and De Allende was forced to play as a center combination and prior to the WC they played together as centers for three tests.

De Allende was a center - I never thought Kriel was one,    However, Meyer ruined De Allende - he was a vastly different and better player until Meyer got hold of him and turned him into a Fat Fransie model  - ball hogging and crashballing.

Be it as it may - Burger in the WC took over as stand=-in flyhalf and outside of him the backline had no chance of performing.

None of the players on your list barring Marx have emerged as test players in the two years since the WC....plenty of time. But they have been injury prone in the case of Kriel, Vorster, and Combrink who was also exposed for pace by the Poms. Van Rensburg has also been injured and exposed defensively. And in the case of Marx, nobody coaching the game would have played him ahead of Bismarck 2 years ago. So there you have it......there were really no obvious choices HM missed. Our biggest player miss was the loss of JdV via injury for Allende. HM’s biggest mistake was putting his faith in Jesse Kriel.

Nothing of the sort.   At one stage under Meyer the rating went to 6 - so there is nothing wrong in what I wrote.
