Bray (As in neigh) takes no action against kiwi refs confirming my worst suspicions.

Two Saffa refs get the chop. One Oz amnd the Argentinian ref. BUT NO KIWIS!!!

Fire Bray immediately.

Ex Sport 24

Wellington - SANZAR, Super Rugby's governing body, on Monday dropped three referees from upcoming matches as organisers of the three-nation tournament responded to a litany of complaints from coaches and players about refereeing standards in this season's competition.

South African Lourens van der Merwe, Argentine Francisco Pastrana and Australian James Leckie were all cut from the refereeing roster in a move referees boss Lyndon Bray said recognises "who has performed to expectation and who has not."

The Super Rugby referees panel has been reduced from 18 to 14 with the additional removal of South African Jason Jaftha, who is injured.

South African referee Stuart Berry, who has produced some of the most contentious decisions in recent weeks, remains a member of the refereeing panel.

"We have always strived to have strong accountability within our team and, importantly, accountability for the competition," said Bray. "As such we have always sought to conduct ourselves in a fair, transparent and open manner."

Pastrana was criticised by coaches of both the Blues and Cheetahs last weekend after a match in which he made a number of surprising decisions and seemed to misinterpret instructions from the television referee. He has been replaced for this Friday's match between the Crusaders and Hurricanes.

Van der Merwe has also been replaced for this Saturday's match between the Blues and Highlanders after complaints about his control of matches between the Reds and Sharks and the Force and Chiefs.

Berry was publicly criticised by Bray for awarding a controversial try to the Lions in a match against New Zealand's Blues two weeks ago. He was also responsible for a 19-4 penalty count against the Reds in their 23-20 loss to the Lions in Johannesburg on Saturday after the team led 20-3.

Reds coach Richard Graham harshly criticised Berry's performance.

"The penalty count was 19-4 against us," he said. "I don't think I've ever been involved in a game where the penalty count has been like that.

"Certainly we will be speaking to Lyndon Bray to get clarification."

Berry is due to act as an assistant referee in a match this weekend between the Bulls and Chiefs. Bray said Australians Angus Gardner, Andrew Lees and Matt O'Brien weren't scheduled to referee matches over the next two weeks and would be considered for appointment after that time.

Bray has rejected suggestions that Super Rugby should once again employ neutral referees but says steps need to be taken to ensure higher standards of refereeing.

"One of our core strategic objectives is to grow the depth of the team that is able to referee 'any game, any time'," he said. "In line with this, we have reduced the size of the team heading into the next phase of the competition and in doing so, have recognised who has performed to expectation and who has not."

Round 7 (revised appointments):

Crusaders v Hurricanes - Nick Briant
Rebels v Brumbies - Jaco Peyper
Blues v Highlanders - Steve Walsh
Reds v Stormers - Chris Pollock
Bulls v Chiefs - Craig Joubert
Sharks v Waratahs - Mike Fraser

Round 8 (no change):

Highlanders v Rebels - Chris Pollock
Brumbies v Blues - Rohan Hoffmann
Hurricanes v Bulls - Steve Walsh
Reds v Force - Garratt Williamson
Cheetahs v Chiefs - Craig Joubert
Lions v Crusaders - Marius van der Westhuizen
Stormers v Waratahs - Glen Jackson

Stuart Berry, Angus Gardner, Andrew Lees and Matt O'Brien are not scheduled for primary refereeing appointments in the coming fortnight (as per the communication issued on March 11), but will be considered for Rounds 9-10, which will be released in due course.

from what ive seen the best refs in the comp right now are nz refs, you really need to move on from your pathetic, transparent, pettyness towards all Nz Refs, other then Bryce its unjustified.

@Arizona the sun must be effecting your brain

1. Reds won against the crusaders in the final with NZ no1 cheat Bryce @ the helm... so your logic doesn't compute.

2. Bent saffa ref who kept his job even though he clearly was on the Lions side...

3. I do actually agree though that over the years the kiwi refs have been farcical and admit that kiwi Bryce was a shocking cheat and they stil have may more in their ranks including the sleeper cell Jackson...

None of you lot read the article and the sensationalism attached to it.   Refs are not removed from the panel - they are just given a enforced break to think about their sins. It happened without much fanfare in the past.   Pollock in the Lions test series and Poite after the Auckland debacle suffered the same fate.
Redsman
I watched the Reds game last night and can understand why the referee was forced to take action against the Reds players.  They broke the laws governing rucks repeatedly and was a number of times warned against those and going off-side as well.   Berry was 100% correct in panelizing them and the Sanzar panel clearly agreed with him after they viewed the game.
I do not know what went wrong with the Reds in the second half - it could have been the altitude problem, but they went on the quiet and tried to only defend their lead.  When under pressure they simply broke the laws.  They were definitely guilty of negative rugby - sad to say.

Its Rugby its just a game at the end of the day, saying you hate Nz or Australia over a game of rugby is kinda pathetic lol. And please stop with this personal vendetta againgst kiwi refs, and this never ending conspiracy theiries. Its just petty, small minded, neptiosm. Your just using selective state of thinking to hide the real truth, yeah sure refs screw up, i may even concede they may favor certain teams in penalty counts. But this is 20% of the issue, its just misguided frustration by hiding behind the refs your being cowards, your just irrelevant bloggers, NZ is the best ref or no ref, man up and admit that, or continue this pathetic vendetta and continue adding to your already petty rep.

Referees are human beings and like all humans they make mistakes at times.   Most referees are in fact honest and upright people who admit their mistakes afterwards and try to better themselves in future.
Like Wardad said - what happened to these three referees was in fact a hand smack and I am sure they would learn from their mistakes.
There are also the case of incompetent referees - Bryce Lawrence being an example - where the referees are removed permanently from the IRB and Sanzar panels - but those cases are rare.

"There are also the case of incompetent referees - Bryce Lawrence being an example - where the referees are removed permanently from the IRB and Sanzar panels - but those cases are rare."

Wrong, ou Maaik. It's a commonly held theory that Bryce Lawrence was fired by SANZAR but it's actually completely untrue. Bryce Lawrence resigned as a referee after he received death threats from literally tens of thousands of South African crybabies and he realised he'd never be able to fulfill his obligations as a SANZAR referee by refereeing overseas - and in South Africa specifically - because his life would be in danger.

SANZAR did not remove Bryce Lawrence. Why would they? He was one of their best refs and his expertise was lost to rugby because of disgraceful, ref-bashing South Africans who weren't prepared to blame their RWC defeat on the pathetic tactics that we employed but chose to blubber and whine about the ref instead.

A truly shameful chapter in South African rugby history! Bryce Lawrence is miles better than any other Southern Hemisphere ref . . . something the crybabies should consider when they whine and bleat about all these lesser refs who replaced Bryce Lawrence.

One has to ask why after a couple of errors by saffa refs things come to a head. Saffa reffs reply in kind and now we have two gone! Oz loses one and Argintina one. But the worst refs in the world come from nz and not one gets the chop. I smell a rat. Cloudy ou rooitwit will always support the kiwis - he is a closet kiwi - bwahahahahahahaha - probably living in nz right now!
Fire the Braying donkey is the first move in the right direction that must happen. It's like ou bryce lawrence chairing an ethics committee!!!  - even my friend brycy thinks that's funny!

well Beanhead, it is only fair and natural that only the refs that actually know the rules officiate and it is no surprise at all that the responsibility to maintain law and order falls on the shoulders of kiwi refs - it is a burden we have to bear.

Actually, it wasn't so much Steyn missing kicks that cost the Boks that game, it was having Skulk Burger and Victor Matfield as the halfbacks that cost us.

Instead of whining about Bryce Lawrence and making death threats, the ref-bashers should rather count how many times Skulk Burger and Victor Matfield were the first or second receivers in that game.

Lawrence reffing in the last WC was shocking. Facts are facts.
If we consider his performance as excellent then it really is a sad day for rugby in general and for the future of the game.
Owen and Joubert have the qualities/standard that all ref's should be judged by.
Finish and klaar!

 @beeno,
there are so many aspects in this article to talk about: the first time refs are clearly punished, if it will work, if it's positive or negative for the game, how it will affect the refs, if it will affect the amount of people willing to be a ref,.... whatever...
but you only see that there's one saffa ref punished and no NZ ref is.
You are the partiality in the flesh, it's imposible to be more biased than you, man

If there wasn't any NZ ref's performance that had deserved to be punihed ( and you don't mention such a thing so I assume there wasn't any) what do you suggest SANZAR should do? to penalise the NZ refs for being from NZ or what?

"Is a racist worse than a homophobe? I want a honest answer please."
Draadtrekker, your question is both stupid and insulting.
By asking for an "honest" answer you're implying that I'm a liar by default . . . otherwise why would you feel the need to ask me to be honest?
As for whether a racist is "worse" than a homophobe, worse at what? What is the context here? Worse as a human being? Worse as a message board poster? Either way, it's all a bit subjective. W hy do you care what I think on the matter?

Ok, Rooi, agree that was a stupid question and sorry I foolishly implied you are a liar.  That was not the intention. I suppose that using a few homophobic slurs is not as bad as using racial slurs. And yes FA took it too far most of the time. All name calling is a bit juvenile I suppose, but on here it's part of the fun and banter and not to be taken too seriously.  For some or other reason some people  do ho wever.

Warped DUD and all the rest. bryce lawrence was widely condemed for his disgusting performance. Even kiwis have conceded this. Poor ou brycy was said to have had an off day. Waht a shocking understatement! His bias was huge.rooitwit he coud still be reffing now if he so wished. He and paddy got the boot. Both of them hiwever it was packaged - due to the widespread outcry not only in South Africa.
Dont make a silly excuse re somebody giving him a death threat!!! How lame. He did not stop refeffing because of that. His cred was shot.A simple excercise in logic for ou warpd DUD.A side loses by 1 point. they should however have been given 10 penalties in front of the post but a bent ref denied then that as well as two legitimate tries. Their own kicker however missed a kick at goal. To the say its the teams own fault for missing that goal and giving that as the legitimate reason for them losing the game is totally ludicrous. Please oaks try and think before posting.

I am sure ou brycy lawence could put in a decent ref performance on occassions if he was minded to do so. However the Bok management counted 45 errors in that one match. Prof Tim Noakes is on record asking for an offical enquiry. To the extremely gullible like ou rooitwit all this is fine. Why would a closet ab fan like rooitwit bother about the Boks being shafted like that! Hahahahahahahha
Beeno exposing ou rooitwits closet ab fan status and warped DUD's warped logic.
