The protracted saga over where Ma'a Nonu will play in 2014 is finally over with the All Blacks star signing with the Blues.

Nonu, 31, has opted to turn down a lucrative offer from a French rugby club, which would have forced him to take a sabbatical from New Zealand rugby.

It also would have made him unavailable to the All Blacks until after next June's three-test series here against England.

But either All Blacks coach Steve Hansen or the New Zealand Rugby Union forced a rethink.

The Blues and the Chiefs made late bids for the experienced midfielder after all five Kiwi Super Rugby franchises had previously stated they did not want him.

Nonu had turned down a plum offer from French club Clermont.

Although he has played 85 tests for the All Blacks, Nonu has been a noted non-performer at Super Rugby level. He upset Blues coach Sir John Kirwan when he reneged on a deal to play there last season.

Instead, Nonu turned out for the Highlanders - his third franchise in as many years after his career at the Hurricanes ended when coach Mark Hammett forced him out.

Nonu will now return to the team he played for in 2012 having agreed terms with Kirwan in the last 48 hours.

Nonu played 110 games for the Hurricanes between 2003 and 2011 and plays for the Oriental-Rongotai club in Wellington club rugby.

Brycy: we will see if Kirwin can make him perform.
If GH is still involved providing input to the coaching then maybe there is a chance as he might be able to get through to Nonu. The fact is that Nonu has been getting away with his crap so I don't know if he has learned his lesson.

Any franchise  prepared to take on Nonu must be gambling big time.   His record in Super 15 this year has been disgraceful and his illegal tackles are always in the red and yellow card zone.  I think his performance is going down and I believe he is in the AB team because they do not have any other reasonable center to replace him.

He still have an occasional top play in attack - but it is far too rare to be acceptable - and his defence has deteriorated - hence his preference for illegal tackling.

Hope Kirwan can reign him in - but I do not see of what value Nonu would be to the Blues

glad nonus going to be around, hes got plenty to prove at spXV level, but for the All Blacks hes a key player and thats even when he does dumb stuff, his passing, kicking game and ability to match the physical demands of the 12 makes him the best 12 in the world.

blues backline,,,
9 p weepu
10 b marshall
11 g moala
12 m nonu
13 f saili
14 f halai
15 c piutau

20 b hall
21 c noakes
22  j wilionson

thats a mean blues backline, but blues have always had a good backs,
one thing about nonu is hes not really a leader, hes not the type of guy u look to when during a game when the shits hit the fan and ur backs to the wall.
hes an individual who does his job and does it well and one thing that blues backline needs is an experienced old head the likes of snake and JDV etc.

With respect - my friend - Nonu the best 12 in the world?  You really must be kidding or being partial in making that statement.  He may have been years ago - he definitely is not at present.

Not really on the over 30 issue.  De Villiers is 31 and he remains a very good and fair player - so is Habana.   What bothers me is the issue of actual performances after that age.

Some - the exceptions stay in top league - even though their performances have gone down from what it used to be.  Some even may get better - very rare - for instance De Villiers is better than he was 2 years ago.  The latter probably have been the result of his captaincy and the fact that he feels that as a leader who must set an example to his players.

On the whole I believe - and it has been proven - that the older players get - the more they become injured and the longer it takes them to recover.   That in itself can be an impediment insofar as the team I concerned.  However, that can be a two-edged sword - since it opens up the way for younger players - like Cane - to prove how really valuable they are.

I am needling the NZ members by reference to McCaw - even though I honestly believe that he is not the player he was two years ago - but he is still top class - better than any opensider we have.

In the case of Nonu I am honest and really meant what I wrote - he is going downhill and his attitude is not helping him - it is just causing havoc for his team.  That is why the franchises had to be forced by Hansen to give him another chance.

Hansen's pressure is based on some newspaper reports I saw since it became known that the Highlanders do not want him anymore.   Newspapers often speculate and write things to sell their papers - so I may be wrong.

Teammates could also be a problem - look no further than James O'Connor as an example - and I hope Kaino and Marshall are stabilizing forces in the case of Nonu.   Would still NEVER select him in my fantasy rugby squads - too big a gamble for my liking.

Clevermike: I agree with some of what you say about aging rugby players. I was playing rugby until around 33.
In the last few years I was injured more and I couldn't recover in time for the next weekend's game. I am talking about bumps and bruises (ankle sprains, etc.) not real injuries. Now although we played on a field that was as hard as concrete and had a few boulders and concrete blocks just under the surface I believe it was age that was the real problem. I would hobble onto the field and give it a go but the writing was on the  wall & I knew it was time to start coaching.
However, top rugby players have far better medical and physio support (plus they are real athletes not some bloke who laces up his boots for the weekend, lol). Really well coached and smart players also adjust there game. McCaw is a clear example. He has adjusted to rule changes but also to his physical ageing. He uses his energy well on the field & does not run around aimlessly.
Even in the case of Nonu we have seen him getting smarter (it took some time, lol) so now we see him  kicking behind or through the opposition back line and not just crash ball stuff.
So yes rugby players age but depending on the player they can last until around 32 - 34 and still be top players. You could have a  player on the bench up until 35. At 35 the wheels fall off, lol

@mikey,

id pick nonu any day over especially JDV, and thats knowing nonu can be disciplinary liability.

nonu knows exactly what is required of his job and he executes it perfectly, knowing what to do and when to do it.
of course im talking about international level only BTW, cos at spXV his brain and heart seem to be on holiday.

nonus passing game is the best in the world, his kicking game is just extremely smart, he can take and dish out the physical requirements demanded from the modern day 12, but its his decision making which really seals the deal.

JDV decision making is poor and the higher the stakes, the worst his brain functions in sussing out the best option.
All Blacks try bang on halftime, and barrets try are examples of his inability to make the right calls, a problem nonu seldom has to the detriment of the team.
JDVs still a good player, but hes played the majority of his career in the Boks under boring 10 man rugby tactics, so maybe hes not exactly to blame for being the byproduct of SA rugby,

there was also that stormers vs sharks semi final, where he made plenty of errors stemmed from poor decision making, both as a player and a captain.

JDVs been good in 2012 and 2013, but 2010-2011 he would have been lucky to make a NZ super rugby starting team so poor was his form.
nonu on the other hand has never had a poor spell like that, hes been quiet a game or two, but his contribution as a whole has always been easily noted by the coaches, the worst u can expect is brain fart moments like the shoulder tackle on JDV and slipper, and while that was a dumb ass moment for sure, it dosent begin to tip the scales of all the positive things he has done.

SBW is the only player in the world i would pick ahead of nonu for the No12.

Nonu started sulking when he got kicked out of the Hurricanes. He was there so long he though he could shout the odds.

Much to his dismay he was brought down to earth and wouldn't accept it.

He's a bit of pouter.

He's definitely not even close to contending for the best 12 in the world. That's laughable.

A quality player ... definitely ... but one with issues ... lots of baggage ...

Perhaps Bismarck the Awesome should go over and smack him about a bit ... teach him some manners ... get him to appreciate what you guys are trying to do for him.

The Blues did not want Nonu to shoulder charge their team, this was the only reason they signed him Weepu was especially keen on the signing
