Nonu Urges SA Rugby Teams to Step Up
All Blacks legend Ma’a Nonu has thrown down the gauntlet to South Africa's rugby teams in the Investec Champions Cup, urging them to step up their game against Europe's top clubs. As the Bulls, Lions, and Stormers gear up for the prestigious tournament, Nonu emphasized the importance of not just participating but competing fiercely.

The Sharks, meanwhile, will participate in the less-prestigious EPCR Challenge Cup this season. This differentiation highlights the varying levels at which the South African teams are currently playing in European competitions. Despite their best efforts, a South African team has not progressed beyond the quarterfinal stages since they first joined the Champions Cup in the 2022-23 season.

During the Champions Cup launch in Sandton, Nonu pointed out that the South African teams seem to underestimate the importance and the opportunity presented by this European contest. "The South African teams need to realise what a privilege it is to be able to play in the competition," Nonu stated, reflecting on his own experiences with Toulon in France.

"Just look at the stature of the European teams that compete in it every year. These are teams loaded with some of the best rugby players in the world. The South African teams shouldn’t just see it as a bonus to take part in the competition. They need to be competitive and show [the European clubs] where they come from."

Nonu, now a mentor with the Sharks, pointed out the dominance of French clubs in the Champions Cup, predicting they will continue to be the benchmark for excellence. His perspective is drawn from the robust competitiveness of France's Top 14 league, which he regards as the premier rugby competition globally.

The involvement of South African players in the French leagues has been substantial, and according to Nonu, it is a testament to the high level of play expected in the Champions Cup. Stadia filled to capacity and the vibrant culture of traveling supporters add to the dynamic atmosphere of matches in Europe.

Contrasting this with the evolution of rugby competitions globally, Nonu remarked on the shifting dynamics that have seen French rugby ascend while traditionally strong leagues like Super Rugby have seen a dip in prominence over the last two decades.

The action kicks off with the Bulls hosting Stade Français at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday, October 17 at 2pm, followed by the Stormers welcoming Bristol Bears at 4:15 pm. The Lions will make their tournament debut against La Rochelle in France later that evening at 6:30 pm SA time.

This season's Champions Cup fixtures promise intense matchups as South African teams look to assert themselves more firmly on the European stage, taking heed of Nonu's critical but encouraging advice.
