Canada will bid to create history against the All Blacks Sevens

On a breathless day's action at the Sam Boyd Stadium, Canada performed heroics to reach only their second-ever Cup semi-final in IRB Sevens rugby, joining defending USA Sevens champions South Africa, New Zealand and Samoa in the final four.

The South Africans, the most recent winners on the HSBC Sevens World Series, have conceded just seven points in their four matches so far at the Sam Boyd Stadium and beat Argentina 36-0 in their quarter-final with tries by Cecil Afrika, Branco du Preez, Seabelo Senatla, Chris Dry (2) and Werner Kok. They next face Samoa in an enthralling match-up between the only two sides to have won a Cup in Las Vegas.

The 2010 and 2012 champions, Samoa, came from 10-0 behind to beat Australia 12-10 with tries from Sani Niue and Lio Lolo.

In another enthralling quarter-final Canada came from 14-0 behind to reach their first Cup semi final since the Tokyo Sevens back in 2000, defeating France 17-14 with Connor Braid scoring two tries before Nanyak Dala snatched the win.

The Cannucks will face Series leaders New Zealand after the All Blacks Sevens proved too strong for England in the last of the quarter-finals, winning 24-7 spear-headed by a hat-trick from Waisake Naholo.

Kenya beat Spain 24-0 to book their place in the Bowl semi-finals and will face Scotland, who won 31-7 against Portugal with captain Colin Gregor scoring 11 points in the win and Lee Jones adding a brace of tries.

Fiji, beaten narrowly by New Zealand in the Cup quarters, are also through to the Bowl semi-finals after a 38-14 win against Uruguay. They will play Wales, who snatched a 12-7 victory against host nation USA.

Spain, Portugal, USA and Uruguay will all enter the Shield semi finals on day two.

With pool play concluded on the second of the three match days in Las Vegas, South Africa set up their quarter-final with Argentina by winning all three of their pool matches.

Having not conceded a single point on day one, Werner Kok, Stephan Dippenaar and Seabelo Senatla all scored tries in a 19-7 victory against Kenya, while Canada also qualified from Pool A after beating Wales 21-19.

Tries from Nanyak Dala, Phil Mack and Justin Douglas guaranteed Canada's win but they had a nervous wait to see if South Africa would beat Kenya to ensure their place in the final eight.

France and Argentina had both already booked their places in the quarter-finals of the Cup but it was France's 14-0 win over Los Pumas that maintained their 100% record and ensured they topped Pool D.

Dubai Sevens champions Fiji dropped down to the Bowl after they narrowly lost 12-7 to the current Series leaders New Zealand in an enthralling encounter having also lost 22-21 to Australia on day one.

The current Series leaders and Gold Coast champions, New Zealand, set up their Cup quarter versus England with their third win in Las Vegas.

Samoa also made it three wins from three in Pool C with an impressive 35-0 defeat of Portugal thanks to two tries from Levi Asifa'amatala. Dan Norton scored a hat-trick in England's defeat of Uruguay to secure their spot in the last eight.

The hosts USA recorded their first win by beating Spain 31-10 with tries by Brett Thompson (2), Folau Niua, Stephen Tomasin and Ryne Haitsuak.

big congrats to the canucks and making the vegas semi finals, have really enjoyed watching their progress in this tournament.
to be down 14-0 against france at one stage, but still come back for that win, its easy to see why everyone loves an under dog.

their efforts now have them going against 7s No1 team NZ, and while i cant see them winning, the north americans can hod their head up high for a meke effort, :o)

blitzboks have a tough match against samoa in their semifinals, they should win it though, they are a much stronger on paper and their form in las vegas has been top shelf. efficient and ruthless.
samoa are a powerhosue team though and should never be underestimated, but blitzboks have all the necessary tools and then some to get the job done.

expecting NZ and SA to be in the finals, with samoa and canda to battle it out for 3rd.

i am a big fan on how las vegas is over three days, two pool games in day one, a pool game and quater finals match in day two, and a semis and finals match for day three.
smart way to fo it IMO, very player freindly the wat the three days lighten the load which is always a good for the players welfare, :o)

GO NZ 7S!!!

blitzbok and NZ both through to the las vegas 7s finals, congrats to both teams, :o)

as samoa pushed the blitzboks, and while the canadians were beaten comfortably on the scoreboard, the score dosent tell the story which was the cannucks made it real difficult.

final willl be way too hard call, but i cant wait.

GO NZ 7s , :o)

Not hard to call at all - New Zealand was bound to lose and lose they did.  Look - New Zealand loves to be runners-up in games.   They won the world series repeatedly by regularly being runners-up in tournaments.  Last year they won one cup - while each of Fiji and SA won 3.

So far this year the record is SA 2, New Zealand nil.   For the fans sake I hope they manage a win two weeks from now in Wellington - but as Beeno says the wee AB's has very little chance to do that.

With NZ going home and coming off two back to back final losses against the Boks, I wouldn't be betting against them.
With ball in hand the AB's always looked more dangerous in this last final, just couldn't retain possession.
Blitzbokke look like they are playing at another level of consistency and excellence, well-drilled and disciplined. Victory today was remarkable considering the injuries and Geduld, the leading try scorer, leaving early. Change at the top looks to have been a good one.

congrats blitzboks and tough luck kiwis, great game and real on the edge stuff, :o)

blitzboks lucky to not lose a man for that tip tackle, an offence which saw a NZ player carded and banned for two games, but them be the breaks i guess.

@mikey,
"New Zealand loves to be runners-up in games.   They won the world series repeatedly by regularly being runners-up in tournaments.  Last year they won one cup - while each of Fiji and SA won 3."
o_O
NZ won  two tournaments last year, the south african and england circuts, but they also won the 2013 7s RWC, something that SA have never won.
so technically, they won three tournaments including the 7s RWC in russia, :o)

and fiji only won two tournaments the australian and much coveted honk kong circut.

"They won the world series repeatedly by regularly being runners-up in tournaments."
another way to look at it is they won the tournament by being the most consistent team.
NZ have had a podium finish in the circuts since all the way back to the 2011 dubai 7s, thats not a bad record in its own right and that level of consistency has been why NZ have 11 world series titles, and SA has 1, :oP

"So far this year the record is SA 2, New Zealand nil."
NZ won the gold coast 7s.

agree 100%, there is a level of consistency in the blitzboks team which has been missing for a long time.
will they be able to maintain that level throughout the entire season??? that remains to be seen, but i wouldnt bet against it.

i was critical of SARU of letting go of paul treu who i rate a lot, but it looks like it might have been the right call after all.

i wouldnt say the victory was remarkable even with the injuries, as SA have depth similar to NZ, class players who have been in form.
cecil afrika was a player who was once irreplaceable, but that branco du preez fella has all the playmaking attributes that the likes of cecil has, a real danger player and i have to admit i was hoping to see the last of him when left the field for the concussion test, lolz, :oP

I was needling and you fell for it.   A bit of false info always help.

Look - I have noticed that there was a change in shall I say psychology and an  improvement in performances of the Blizbokke since the departure of Treu - but there also was some negative tendencies since his appointment by Kenya,

There must have been something inside the camp that was amiss - something which was not public knowledge.   The same players - except for the return of Brown from injury - and the consistency improved.   No Dubai fiasco like last season where they could not get through to the semi-finals.

There is a huge gap between SA and New Zealand on top and the teams like Fiji and England on third and fourth on the log - so strictly speaking the competition for winning the present series is between those two teams - with the most consistent one likely to be the winner.

I suspect that the Wellington series may be a turnaround and New Zealand winning that one - but it will be a lot of hard work in their case.   The one problem they have - they are slipping a bit in defence,   In six games the Blitzbokke  had only two tries scored against them in Las Vegas - the AB's  had one or more tries scored by opponents in every match they played in.   So defence seems to be a bit of a problem.   Speed also seems to be a bit of a negative in some respects - most NZ players are strong runners rather than speedy ones - so long distance tries are more difficult to achieve.

Lets wait to see what happens in Wellington in 14 days time.   Go Blitzbokke Go.

Do es it not worry you that in 7 games between the Springbok Sevens and the AB sevens over the past year - the AB sevens did not win a single game.     Are they becoming the bunnies of the Springboks Sevens??????

It was a great win. Very proud of them. They've struggled a bit this season.

@mikey,

"I was needling and you fell for it.   A bit of false info always help."
mikey mikey mikey, false info needling is trolling amateur hour at its best and requires no  thought what so ever.

i think ur a great poster, dont agree with many of ur views, but i do with plenty of others, however i think ur needling skills are below average.

the best trolliong/needling comes from facts which are irrefutable, why do u think so many saffas hate my shoving facts down their throats, cos the truth hurts and my taking pleasure from that truth only enhances the pain, :oP

"There is a huge gap between SA and New Zealand on top and the teams like Fiji and England on third and fourth on the log - so strictly speaking the competition for winning the present series is between those two teams - with the most consistent one likely to be the winner."
i think the euphoria of blitzboks latest outstanding performances has clouded ur judgement, cos it is insane to rule out fiji after only 4 tournmanets, o_O

fiji have been poor the last two tournaments, but no team has introduced as many new players into the 7s team the last two years the way the fijians have.
with players like l naikasau, j tuitoga, s viriviri, all class players, but they dont have the form that players in SA and NZ which at the moment have and that is the difference.

USA was poor for fiji, but the pool of death lived up to its name as the aussies 7s team claimed a very memorable scalp.
australia arent a top tier team, but they have the the potential to knock anyone out of their game if theyre not ready, blitzboks found this out in the gold coast 7s.

but in saying all that, NZ and SA are clearly the most consistent teams, and the blitzboks have the edge and momentum which is both crucial and handy with their one point win.

The problem is that even if the Fijians win all the other tournaments - they will find it very hard to catch up if either New Zealand or SA are in the semis.   As far as I know there are 5 tournaments left.  They are too far behind to make up the deficit they have at present.

Another one you mentioned is the momentum - it certainly is true.   Inclusive of and  since Las Vegas 2013 the Blitzbokke has beaten New Zealand 7 times in the tournaments played - in other words they won every match played between NZ and SA.

That is not a good sign for NZ iro the coming Wellington tournament - even though SA has a difficult draw this time around.   If they manage to win their pool - they will not have difficulties in the quarterfinals - and will likely run up against Fiji in the semis.   That is going to be problematic for them.  They seem to have more difficulties against Fiji than against New Zealand.

This is not needling - I hope it is a factual situation - at least that is how I see it.

Las Vegas. 12/2/12 NZ 20 - 7 SA

HK. 24/03/12. NZ 19 - 10 SA

@mikey,

5 tournaments - a possible 110pts, unlikely that fiji will get that, but the real key is the consistency that both NZ and SA currently have at the moment, will they be able to maintain that level throughout the entire season???

i know NZ can, they have never finished lower than 3rd place since the 2011 dubai sevens.
the podium finish which NZ have maintained over and over has been a big reason why NZ was able to increase theor world series titles to 11.
mean while, SA suffered major hurdles at last years homg kong 7s where they finished 12th.

we all know that NZ can maintain this level of consistency, but can SA do the same???
like i said, given their current form to date, i wouldnt bet against it, but proof is in the pudding.

this is why i would never rule out fiji, especially with the roster of players they currently have which matches anything that NZ and SA can throw at them.

on a side note, i dont mind the former england 7s coach ben ryan (the mitchel from modern family look a like) who is the current fijian coach, but paul treu and fiji would have been a match made in heaven IMO.

SA is always trying to promote rugby in Africa as a whole and always have a number of mechanisms in place to promote the game.   I suppose the idea was to get a better coach for Kenya as - hence the move insofar as  Treu is concerned.

@mikey,

SA had nothing to do with paul treu being named coach of kenya, paul treu is a class act who was jobless, kenya needed a new change and got rid of their coach, kit was a match made in heaven.

and while its always good to promote rugby especially in SA, i would suggest SA concentrate on the rugby in their own backyard, otherwise u can expect ur rugby trophy cabinet to continue to look like this

and filling the Springboks rugby fixtures with easy beat teams like SARU did in 2013 is not going to change that one bit,

Seriously now - SA has done more to make Rugby a worldwide sport - especially in South America and Africa than anybody else.   It is for them a mission, since they think rugby participation should be widened.

We have the structures to promote rugby in SA - but provide practical assistance to other countries as well.   There is regular rugby clinics for schools and colleges in Kenya run by SARU - so there is reasonable arguments that True was brought in to help them as well.

The same applies in other parts of Africa as well - so that shows our interest in world rugby against the closed shop approach of New Zealand in particular.

@mikey,

i wouldnt say SA has done more to make rugby a worldwide sport than anyone else, but i agree that SAs contribution to argentina and africa is unmatched on a nation basis.

"There is regular rugby clinics for schools and colleges in Kenya run by SARU - so there is reasonable arguments that True was brought in to help them as well."
disagree about ur definition of reasonable argument.
SARU having rugby clinics in some schools and colleges means that theres a reasonable argument to be made that SARU have regular rugby clinics in some schools and colleges.

there is no info out there from either SARU or the kenyan rugby union which backs ur argument, and if there is, i would really like to read it.

"so that shows our interest in world rugby against the closed shop approach of New Zealand in particular."
under ur argument, NZ has contributed a lot more to the world than anybody else, warren gatland -  2013 british lions series coach winner, 3 time 6nats winner including 2 grandslams
john mitchell - 2011 lions CC champs
robbie deans - 2011 TriNat champions (australias 3rd ever TriNats)
jospeh smit  -2011 and 2012 leicester heineken champs

also NZ have contributed a lot too, especially towards the pacific island, u need only look at the history of the pacific cup games to know this is true.
the recession which hit the world a few years back forced NZRU to stop sending our junior All Blacks (NZ A team) who were regular competitors in the pacific nations cup.

NZRU dont promote rugby as much as they didn in the past, but they still do a lot.
we played against japan last year in tokyo and this year were playing against the eagles in USA, as the No1 and most recognised team in the world of rugby, every little bit helps, :o)
