NZU20 lose to England in semis

A heartbroken New Zealand Under 20 side has lost their IRB Junior World Championship semifinal against England 33 - 21 this morning, despite a valiant second-half come-back effort.

It is the first time the four-time title-winning New Zealand side has not reached the World Championship Final. They will now prepare to play for bronze against 2012 champions South Africa, who were just beaten by Wales 18-17 in the first of the semifinals.

New Zealand started in the best possible way, when hooker Epalahame Faiva crossed for a five pointer in the 10th minute of the first half.

England struck back when openside flanker Matt Hankin scored a runaway try and this was followed up by a intercept try to right wing Anthony Watson. New Zealand first five-eighth Simon Hickey added a 48m penalty on the stroke of halftime; however New Zealand went to the halftime break behind on the scoreboard 20-8.

Penalties were exchanged early in the first half to keep the scoreboard moving for both teams.

New Zealand centre Jason Emery crossed for a try on the 60 minute mark after a twenty-phase attack. The conversion from the sideline was successful from replacement Jade Te Rure and this brought the New Zealand team to within five points of the lead with 15 minutes remaining. Another penalty from Te Rure with seven minutes remaining closed the gap to two points.

England crashed over for a try with five minutes to play and this was converted by Henry Slade. Slade added a final penalty to give England the victory 33 points to 21.

New Zealand Rugby Chief Executive Steve Tew said he was proud of the team’s efforts.

“That was a tough match and I am proud of the way they kept themselves in the game. I know those boys will be hurting as we have a proud record in this tournament but I also know they will get up for their last match against South Africa.”

New Zealand Head Coach Chris Boyd said that the team gave themselves every opportunity to win the match but mistakes at crucial times were costly.

"We lacked accuracy in excution at times that cost us 14 points. In the end this was the difference between the two teams. The team is very disappointed with the outcome of the match. The boys now have desperate resolve to get up for the match against South Africa on Sunday."

New Zealand Under 20 team will now play South Africa in the playoff for third and fourth on Monday 24 June (1.15am NZT). England will play Wales in the final.

the english rematch on the EOYT was already the test ive been looking forward to the most in 2013, but now my thirst for revenge has never been higher (insert evil laugh), O_O

well at least we that NZ v SA match i predicted, only its for the bronze medal, :o(
IMO after watching the games unfold, the saffas should be feeling quite comfortable going into the thrid place matchm i think they have the advantage, especially after watching the boys get owned by england.
but  the outcome of the NZ u2os and jrBoks is more important after i think about it, cos now were playing for sarugby.com bragging rights, so ,,,

This is getting embarrasing. First your senior sides get whipped by the poms and then the juniours suffer the same dismal fate. You are now fully owned by the Poms!! A fate worse than death!

At least we had the comfort on knowing Wales won on a ref error. It seems to me despite this side being inferior to our 2012 team we could have retained the title given we beat England first time round. Hard luck Baby Boks!

Poi-e 2 years in a row the NZ scrummed get owned. 2 years they did not win it. SA scrum was shyt got owned by everyone almost as well.

SH sides need to relearn the art of scrumming. This was a big wake up call. Things need to be rectified before the next WC lest the NH win it.

Beeno, no gloating from me. The try was given, my opinion is that the two better sides won on the day. The two games were very enjoyable and nice to see no divide between SH & NH rugby in this age group.

Well well well, NH getting their groove back it's been a long time coming but is actually a good sign going forward as for years the NH haven't been that competitve at all.

Bluebok there is a very significant difference. We lost by one point and the Welsh were awarded a try where the ball was knocked on.

Also we have not lost against either the poms juniour or senior sides consequetively.

The other point you missed is folk here have generally been concerned abou this baby bok side. Poor scrumming. But all in all they did enough to win barring a ref mistake as also the match stats showed. FACTS.

Spoony the Boks were ahead in territory and possession stats. We goaled 3 out of 6 kicks, one hitting the upright and had a non try given against us. It was a very unfortunate loss. Any idea the welshies were so deserving is twaddle. The were gifted 7 points. Give us 7 points and we win by 6. QED

I fully concede that this side was not as good as last year but I think they deserved a win and would have won but for a ref error. Having won one can say with some confidence (Given their win over Engalnd) they would have retained the crown. Where would all the NH and rooitwelshes crowing be then?

No other conclusion is rationally possible. Empty heads will no doubt bleat on about "look at the scoreboard" as usual but facts are facts that score is incorrect.
