Former Melbourne Rebels playmaker James O'Connor has been linked to the Reds but vice captain Will Genia says the former international will have to bring the right attitude if he is to join the Queenlanders.

The Reds are thought to be considering an offer for the former international as he could be a solution to the Reds struggle in Super Rugby.

Few will doubt O'Connor's ability on the field but there have been too many stories of the young star being a disruption which is why there isn't a race between Australian teams to secure his signature.

O'Connor had his Australian Rugby Union contract torn up last year and he moved to England and has been playing for London Irish since then.

Queensland Rugby Union boss Jim Carmichael is believed to be open about signing O'Connor to play for his home state but Genia says that culture is more important than how many breaks he can make before deciding if he was right for the Reds.

"If he wants to be part of the team and build for the future, if that's the case then I'd be willing to welcome him with open arms,” Genia told The Courier-Mail .

"He's dominated at Super Rugby and Test level, so there's no denying he's a class player."

"If he was to come, it would have to be for the right reasons. From a cultural point of view that's more important."

"We don't want to just say yes to anybody and everybody."

O'Connor played 44 times for the Wallabies before a drunken incident at Perth Airport led to the end of his ARU contract.
