The national selectors have also kept a great deal of continuity. In total, 12 players who started the final Test of 2013, where the Springboks beat France in Paris for the first time in 16 years, have been retained in the squad.

However, notable omissions include Springbok captain and SARU’s Player of the Year in 2013, Jean de Villiers, who is out with a knee injury, and the Young Player of the Year for the last two seasons and IRB Player of the Year nominee last year, Eben Etzebeth, who has been given more time to fully recover from the foot injury which has kept him sidelined this entire season.

The Springboks will also be without one of their vice-captains, Adriaan Strauss, who has been suspended for three matches as well as the experienced Jaque Fourie, who started all three Tests last November but has been ruled out with an ankle injury and Pat Lambie, a regular member of the squad for the last two years.

“It’s never easy starting the international season without a number of key players, but it’s the same for our opponents as well and there are no excuses – we simply have to hit the ground running this week and make sure we start the season as well as possible,” said Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer, who will name the interim captain next week.

“Injuries also provide opportunities for new players and from what I’ve seen at the training camp in Durban earlier this week, they are also raring to go.

“Oupa Mohoje got an opportunity at the Cheetahs following injuries to Lappies Labuschagne, Philip van der Walt and Jean Cook, and he took his chance. At the Sharks, Stephan Lewies came in for the injured Pieter-Steph du Toit and he came very close to inclusion in this squad.

“It was also wonderful to see the excitement in the more experienced players, who have tasted what Test rugby is about. Everyone knows we’re at the start of a challenging season but everyone is raring to get going.”

Meyer said that all of the uncapped players deserved their opportunity.

“Damian, Cornal, Oupa, S’bura, Marcel and Callie have all been in great form recently for their various Vodacom Super Rugby franchises, while Lood was very impressive before his injury and he underlined that with a great attitude and work ethic at the Durban camp,” said Meyer.

“Some of them have been on the national selectors’ radar for a bit longer, while others have been very impressive at our training camp in Durban. They all deserve their selection and now it’s up to them to make the most of it.

“Damian and S’bura both bring utility value to the team, as they can play in more than one position in the backline.

“Cornal, who was the SA Sevens Player of the Year in 2013, is very fast and has a couple of very special attributes, so we’re very excited to work with him and hopefully improve him as a player.

“Upfront, we’ve been very impressed with Lood and Oupa recently. Lood is a no-nonsense lock who will learn a lot from Victor and Bakkies, while Oupa is a superb line-out option, very fast and good with the ball in hand.

“Marcel and Callie have been part of a resurgent Bulls pack recently and their play in the set-pieces is very good. Marcel can play on both sides of the scrum, which makes him a valuable option in the squad, while he also carries the ball well and has shown he can steal ball at the breakdown. Callie brings superb line-out throwing and great scrumming power, while he is never shy to do the dirty work on the field.”

Meyer added that he is looking forward to welcoming Matfield and Burger back into the Bok fold.

“Last year we saw what it meant to Bakkies, Fourie and Jaque when they returned and they showed that age should not be any measure when it comes to Test rugby – if you have the goods and can perform at world-class level, you deserve to be selected,” said Meyer.

“Victor and Schalk have both been out of the game for some time and for different reasons. A year ago, Schalk’s playing future was in doubt, so it’s great to have him back in the Bok fold and I’m looking forward to working with him for the first time. Their excitement at the Durban camp was palpable, but also contagious. The younger players fed off that and I know they will add a lot of value to the squad.”

On the inclusion of Brits he said: “Schalk was part of our plans from the beginning. He is one of the best hookers in the world, is one of the nominees for Heineken Cup Player of the Year and brings heaps of experience with him.”

Strauss, who has been suspended for three weeks for an illegal tackle last weekend, will rejoin in the squad for the final week of the Castle Lager Incoming Series, when his suspension has ended.

Injured players who were not available for selection after featuring in 2013, are De Villiers, Etzebeth, Lambie (bicep), Fourie (ankle), Frans Malherbe (concussion), Scarra Ntubeni (foot), Chiliboy Ralepelle (knee), Frik Kirsten (neck), Pieter-Steph du Toit (knee), Franco van der Merwe (ankle), Arno Botha (knee), Pierre Spies (bicep), Louis Schreuder (hand) and Gio Aplon (elbow).

Juan Smith was also in the selection frame, but as he has been struggling with an injury in recent weeks, he requested the national selectors not to be considered.

I take back all the complimentary things I said about Heynecke Meyer after he picked his initial training squad. This squad is a joke.
I wouldn't have picked even one of the foreign-based players. It's an insult to the players who show loyalty to South Africa and I think it's time Heynecke Meyer becomes foreign-based as well.

This is the craziest squad I have come across for years.   Why some players are in the squad is anybodies guess.
Meyer is in love with the Rugby geriatrics from Europe.   What bloody future is there with players who struggle to be bench selections of their clubs - players like Gurthro Steenkamp and Morne Steyn?
What the hell does Meyer want to do with players like Kirchner in the squad.  He never was any good and never will be.
I gather there are numbers here to cater for the quota selection system - I counted 12 players of colour in the squad  - ie one third of the total squad.   Of those at least 7 are window dressing and the rest are there on merit.
Another amazing thing is that last year the squad consisted of 28 players - it suddenly was extended to 36 players.   What the hell is going on here?

I'm not surprised in the slightest, can still make a fantastic team out that squad. The exclusion of Brussow is the worst call Meyer has ever made. Would've liked to see more youngsters included seeing as we're playing poor Welsh and Scottish teams

He (Meyer) has to get the colour code correct for the masters in the ANC.
If this is indeed his selection I must say I am shocked to say the least.
Well looks like I am going to have to get on the Canadian rugby team bandwagon and follow them more closely.

Brussouw was a failure in the RwC QF. He still plays some great rugby, but that memory still lingers. Lucky players, who I would never pick:
Brits, Coetzee, JJ, Kirchner, Kolisi, Mvovo, Serfontein, Marcel van der Merwe, Visagie.
Far too many Bools again.....Carr totally outplayed Coetzee today....Kirchner is an even worse tackler than JJ
And who needs such a huge squad...it's a joke.

Moz, I suggest you have a look again at todays Bulls match. Marcel never collapsed or were pushed back. If there were any problems in the front row, just look how often Dean Greyling went down or lost his grip.

Marcel seems to be a natural tighthead, but if Heyneke Meyer intends going on with Coenie at 3 , he would be wise to get the right player to support him ... like Juan Smith (who has asked not to be considered right now).

Sure, there are other tightheads in SA, but none are really of international standard. So, the problem at 3 continues.

Lodewyk de Jager (Toyota FS Cheetahs), Lock - 0
Cornal Hendricks (Toyota FS Cheetahs), Wing - 0
Marcel van der Merwe (Vodacom Blue Bulls), Prop - 0

good selections
S’bura Sithole (Cell C Sharks), Wing / Centre - 0
Teboho “Oupa” Mohoje (Toyota FS Cheetahs), Loose forward - 0

the rest of the selections was understandable and predictable, and wont be complained too much by the masses.

can think of a few players who are unlucky, but meyer is in love with the older senior players, so someone had to give way.
edit - jacques du plessiss, he is the unluckiest player.
IMO hes been SAs best forward easy in spXV and would be in a good rumble with de allende as best saffa player.

i cant imagine too many if any of the zero cap players getting game time against the injury ravaged welsh team, they might make a bench appearance against the world XV though.

while i dont like this squad, it should be more then enough for the B oks to win all their games in june.

RE: Which players will be NEW Boks?
April 28, 2014, 20:12:42 Well according to scientific mathematical algorithms (sponsored by Moz I believe) it won't make any difference because as fast as new ones emerge they flop (into the abyss) & the cycle repeats. Stick to Matfield & the tried & true, the rest will shoot through (Europe)

Shocking to say the least.

Meyer is clueless. Worse than Snorre De Villiers.

I cannot believe we keep bringing in morons to coach the national side.

I will support every team that Meyers Goats play against.

I have done a few comparisons between the All Blacks and the Boks. A few interesting facts. The ABs have only two newcomers in their squad of 31. The Boks have 4 in their squad of 36. The oldest Bok is Victor at 37 and the oldest AB is Kevin Mealamu at 35. There is not much of a difference between the two sides except the ABs have slightly more players in the 25 years and younger bracket percentage-wise. At 13 each, they have exactly the same  number of  players in this bracket, though.

This is the comparison:

Not much of a difference, except that despite having the oldest player between the two squads, Meyer are actually introducing more new players than Hansen. In addition, the ABs are a much more experienced side than the Boks and had Meyer included more newcomers and less of the more experienced players the Bok squad would  have been even more inexperienced .

Not much of a difference, you say?

Well here's a difference, Ceradunce, count the number of players in that All Black squad who are playing overseas in weaker competition than the S15, in different conditions with different refereeing interpretations where no-one gets to see them? What's your total? That's right, it's zero. Not one. That's because the All Black squad is only ever picked from players who are showing form in the world's toughest competition outside of test rugby and that policy not only ensures that players selected are fit, in form and used to one another; it also encourages the best players to rather stay in New Zealand if they ever hope to get picked for the All Blacks.

Now count the overseas-based players in the Springbok squad. What's your total? 9? 25% of the team? Okay, there's your difference.

"....who are playing overseas in weaker competition than the S15....."

Rooidrol, That is an opinion that was only tested once before. May I remind you what happened? The two sides who were involved were the current front-runners of the S15 competition, the Sharks, and the runners-up of the European Cup, Saracens. Want me to remind you of  the result as well?

No-one gets to see......? Or no-one selects to watch? As far as I know many of those games are shown in SA.

There is no proof whatsoever that the S15 is the toughest competition in the world. If you want to leave out the overseas players you have to drop the lot of them. Each and every single  one of them . Not keep a select few like Habana, Louw etc. Now, lets see what the team  would look like and what their chances would be.

If you take  out all of the overseas based Boks then the average no of tests between the remaining 27 drops to 24 tests. If you take out Matfield as well, which I suspect you would also want, it drops to 21 tests. That is 10 tests per player less than the selected squad. If you now fill the gaps with more new players, the average experience levels would drop even further. That is a recipe for disaster. Had Meyer done that, he would  have made a few proponents of "stuff the experience" squad moerse happy until they start losing one test after the other and start slipping down the rankings.

I see you have the same problem that ou Stupid Mike has. You cannot read. Did I say that the HC is tougher? No. Did I say that there is no proof that the S15 is tougher. Yes.

I am telling you that because you responded to my post about the two squads. As I said, you are welcome to take out the overseas players and suggest a "new" squad but if and when you do that, you have to bear in mind that you should not include a single overseas player. Not one. Quoting NZ not including overseas players is irrelevant because it is an entirely different situation. They do not have the piss poor SA currency to deal with. They can afford to bar overseas players from playing for the ABs.

That's interesting Ceradyne.

Thing that bothers me is not the youth of the players in each side but rather the quality of each team.

The All Blacks have selected on merit and kept guys like Mealamu cause there aren't really any better than he ... no matter his age.

We on the other hand have selected a lot of chumps.

There are many better players we could have and should have selected in place of the so called experienced guys of yesteryear.

We're not competitive and we could so easily be.

That's why I'm throwing my toys.

Spot on Blikkies re Marcel v/d Merwe at tighthead, he was a solid as a rock in the scrums against the Lions, which the Bulls dominated (look no further than the first scrum when Mellett joins from the bench)......his strength in general play is second to none as well.

Marcel is the real deal
