Tomás Lavanini signs for Racing Métro
Under 20 representative Tomás Lavanini follows Pablo Matera to Eu rope
20 year old Argentine second-rower Tomás Lavanini was named by Daniel
Hourcade as one of four second-rowers in the Pumas touring squad to
face England, Wales and Italy this month in Europe. After completing
international duty the youngster from Hindú in Buenos Aires will remain
in Europe to begin his professional career for Racing Métro in France.
2013 has been quite a year for the Buenos Aires player. He played for
Argentina in the IRB Junior World Championship in France only to then be
named by Santiago Phelan in the greater squad for the Rugby
Championship. With Patricio Albacete and Manuel Carizza both injured
during the opening fixture in Soweto Phelan named Lavanini on the bench
in cover for Julio Farías Cabello and Mariano Carizza. New coach
Hourcade has maintained Lavanini in the squad and he left Argentina for
England this weekend to fly to London with Hourcade and the Argentine
based squad members.
Lavanini´s destination will be Racing Métro, the club which Manuel
Carizza played for last season. he will link up with two other Pumas in
the form of Juan Imhoff and Juan Martín Hernández. Lavanini is yet to
play together for Argentina with either player. In his only appearance
for Los Pumas to date he was a replacement second-rower in Mendoza in a
test in which Hernández and Imhoff both missed out on play in due to
injury. Lavanini could very well join Imhoff in the 23 to face England
next Saturday in London.
Lavanini had been reported to be joining ther Hamilton based Chiefs
franchise to play Super Rugby but was not included in the squad named
last week. He had trained with the squad during the 2013 season but was
not offered a contract as New Zealand teams continue to offer limited
opportunities to players not eligible for the All Blacks. In joining a
Top 14 club Lavanini is certain to develop and offers Argentina a
genuine long term option similar to Pablo Matera who joined Leicester
and Facundo Isa who joined Toulon.

after reading brycys thread about matt symons impressing at the chiefs, i
had another look at the chiefs squad and noticed ole cruzs name tomas
lavanini was not there.
i dont know if this is old news here, so my bad if it is.
very
sad to hear ole cruz wont be rolling with the chiefs, i was looking
forward to hearing some of his comments on the chiefs players.
i also dont like what the article here said,,,

odd
considering kane thomoson, asaeli tikrotuma, mahorni schwalger are all
not eligible for the All Blacks, and matt symons who took over from ole
cruzs spot is also english born, but he hasnt represented england at any
level yet, so i guess he can be considered elgible for All Black
selection.
anyways i wish ole cruz all the best at racing metro and hope he continues to give his two cents aka 5000 rand here on sarugby.com, :o)

@mikey,
i would love for olecruz to tell us what went on with his chiefs contract negotiations, hopefully he can shed some light on the matter in the near future if he should ever return.
u dont usualy have someone as much in the know with this type of info on a player of that level, :o)

thats a big call brother mike, maybe in the future once ole cruz establishes as the pumas incumbent player.
if it were up to us sarugby.com olecruz fans, then of course we would select tomas over carizza, but other coaches might not be so sentimental with their selection policies, :o)

Sas - thx for update. Been wondering where he was. Still smile when I think of his sheepish grin during that TV interview he gave a link to. Seems a humble guy.

Fine young man is Thomas and one wishes him the very best. He will be a Pumas regular very soon. Has a great rugby brain and will in due course no doubt captain the Pumas.Carizza and Etzebeth look a very adequate lock pairing for the Stormers.
Anyhow at least Thomas will be learning real forward play in the NH rather than wasting time in nz. I am sure the kiwis knowing this will be relieved for Thomas's sake that there has been this change in plans.

The Northern Hemisphere, particularly France, will be a far better place for hi to develop. Forward play is far more developed up North than Super rugby.
