Oosthuizen sidelined with broken arm;

South Africa were dealt a blow with the news that prop Coenie Oosthuizen suffered a broken arm in Saturday’s 23-23 draw with Australia.

 

He will be replaced in the Springbok squad by the uncapped Wilco Louw of the Stormers and Western Province.

 

Oosthuizen sustained the injury in the second half of the thrilling encounter which ended in a draw after both sides scored two converted tries and three penalties each.

 

He will visit a specialist in Durban on his return to South Africa.

 

Louw is due to join the Springbok squad on Monday evening in Auckland.

 

The draw means that the Springboks are now in second place on the Rugby Championship table, three points behind New Zealand, who they play next weekend in Albany, North Harbour.

 

Afterwards, Springbok coach Allister Coetzee said he was disappointed with the result but pleased with the players’ effort on the night. The Springboks fell behind 10-20 just after half-time but showed great fighting spirit to grab a 23-20 lead towards the end.

 

A successful Wallaby penalty locked the scores at 23-all, while Springbok pivot Elton Jantjies had his drop kick charged down after the final hooter.

 

“The Springboks will never be happy with a draw,” Coetzee told media at the post-match press conference.

 

“I am however satisfied with the overall performance, because the team showed great character in their fightback. We had three line-breaks and no reward in the last couple of minutes.”

 

According to Coetzee, the most pleasing aspects of the match was his side’s defensive effort, especially how the side adjusted their plan in the second half.

 

“We also continue to scrum well and our lineout also functioned well plus we saw a massive improvement in our mauling tonight,” added Bok coach.

 

“There’s a lot of respect between the two sides and our results have always been very close. Australia are one of the top sides in the world and they gave us a great contest out there.”

 

The Springboks travel to Auckland on Sunday morning, and Coetzee will name his starting team to face the All Blacks, on Thursday.

 Bad news for the Boks, ABs are without two starting props so both teams will draw on their depth.

I wonder how much of the match he played with a broken arm. Nyakana has not had much game at all. He is a good bench player- being able to cover both positions. 
It will be interesting to see if Nykana starts at 3, or Wilco leapfrogs. 
Might be best to start with Nykana as the incumbent. 

 Wilco should have been there from the get go.

Why he was ever selected is beyond me. He doesn't have the technique as a tighthead and would have been destroyed by the All Blacks.

Such a pity he wasn't exposed at 3 ... again.

Hopefully this will be the last time we see this chump wearing a Bok jersey.

Absolute rubbish, Coenie was excellent yesterday. He was part of a dominant scrum, carried the ball with power and made more tackles than anyone.

 
Yeah, yeah ... we all know what a fine tighthead he is.

Next you'll be telling us what a fine loosehead Beast is. That he's fully deserving of his spot in the Bok mix.

I think Coenie is an fact a bench aselection where he has been vey good.
However, I cannot see how Nyakane can be played as a starting prop and am afraid he is not up to standard as has been proved time and again in Super Rugby.   He was not even the starting prop for the Bulls and was normally on the bench.   
He never got onto the field yesterday in any event - he went off after a bare three to four minutes on the field with an eye injury.   Hopefully Louw will start on Saturday.    

 
We have a few like that in the Bok mix. They struggle to make the SR / CC match 23 but find the Bok squad an easy walk-in.

Go figure.

Coenie has never been and will never be anything special at test level. His weight and belly size helps him run over a few guys in the loose ... big deal ... my neighbour can probably do the same and it has nothing to do with talent. 

If he's genuinely our best prospect then all it shows us is how far we've regressed.
