This corroborates what I wrote earlier on Owens 'Cape Town - A renowned New Zealand writer says the Springboks were “done in” by Welsh referee Nigel Owens during last Saturday’s Rugby Championship encounter against the All Blacks in Wellington. After South Africa’s upset win, the New Zealand Herald published a story with a headline: How referee Nigel Owens' missed call killed the All Blacks. The publication stated that Owens did not react when advised by an assistant referee in the dying minutes of the game that two Springboks were offside in front of the posts. However, Mark Reason, a columnist for the Stuff.co.nz website, says the Springboks are the ones who have reason to complain about the referee. “South Africa were absolutely done in by Nigel Owens. The All Blacks scored a first half try preceded by a colossal Lienert-Brown knock-on. And Owens gave the All Blacks seven consecutive second half penalties in the space of 22 minutes, half of which were absurd,” Reason wrote. “He gave (Willie) Le Roux a yellow card extremely harshly. He was offside, but since when can't you dive to make a tackle. But the most ridiculous moment was when South Africa regained possession on their line and Owens blew his whistle. Owens had made no prior ruling. He was giving the All Blacks a chance to win phase possession. But when it went the other way, Owens made a retrospective ruling. “This was referee not ruling on what he saw, but playing God. We have seen it twice before from Owens and it is completely unacceptable. He should be warned for it. Happily for South Africa, Owens did not deny them a deserved victory, he just narrowed the margin.'

I've rated Nigel Owens as one of the best ref's around but relooking at the replay he did make some crucial errors.

Ja maybe too much lime light tends to spoil Nigel and he has a tendancy to play a god and take matters a little far in the discretionary department...but he does seem to have the players respect and controls the game well, at least perhaps in the past. He was never stereo-typed as some refs are such as Peyper, Jackson etc.

If you thought he was bad, how many of you watched Pumas/Wallaby game with Irish ref Lacey...now there's a ref that nobody understands especially the players...there were some calls justifying questioned by Creevy...a forward pass's that was very questionable...2 I remember both in favour of Oz, a Puma try disallowed and an Ozzie try allowed, both were suspect.

Reason is objective. He doesn't buy into the AB praising that the rest of the Island does.

Kiwi's interpret that as bias against them.

More a case of how botching at least two simple tries by not passing in addition to not making their kicks killed the All Blacks.

There was a thread dealing with refereeing of the AB test already in existence - why the start of another thread on the same issue?   It could only result in a repeat of the same contributions already  provided under the previous thread.

No he didn't get a few calls wrong both ways....he got lots of Bok calls wrong. And then supposedly missed an offside call from the assistant, who was desperately trying to insert himself in the game. If it was, it wasn't obvious, I have looked at it several times. The Ioane try at minute 38 came directly from a Brown ball loss forward onto Whiteley's leg. It was a clear knock on....not called by the ref or the assistant standing right opposite. Owens was constantly penalizing and lecturing the Boks, he was watching them like a Hawk. He probably got some complaints at the half.....and was a disruptive force in the second half.

Why make the same point again.....that's a waste of space. This string is a NZ view on the ref, posted after the other thread was stale. It was new information that could have been missed by posters not going back to the old thread. Now I'm off to play in a pro/am tournament. Try to up your game while I'm gone.

Unfortunately I shot 81, the greens were fast and there was a pesky breeze. But that was true for all, I just had an Allende kind of day.... We finished mid pack.

Sure - De Allende played in only two tests this year and the team won the more difficult of the two matches.  So what else is new - you were bad - he was not.

For "Sporty Wednesday " in the Army I took up golf, hit a 64 at the local 18 hole course first time out  .

I lost count after that first hole but the other 17 did take a wee while

The Ioane try came about because Owens blundered by giving the AB's a penalty which brought about the second scrum, thing is the Boks won the first scrum and a penalty should have been awarded to the Boks instead. Even the Kiwi commentators were surprised with one of them repeatedly saying that Owen's decision was "Harsh"

Any referee other than Owens would have penalized the AB/s for their scrumming and not the Springboks.  That was one of the worst decisions I have seen for years.
