Can someone please tell me what happened in that incident just before half-time in the Rebels vs Stompies game?

I was on a business call so I had the volume down and I couldn't give the game my full attention, but I thought I saw Jason Woodward line up a penalty kick and then change his mind and kick for the corner to try and get a sneaky try. It looked like the ball went into touch but then it looked as if he got to take the kick again?

Can someone please fill me in with what happened there because the live tracker on Planet Rugby doesn't mention the incident at all, just says Woodward scored a penalty.

The Rels chose to go for posts and saw the Stormers in a huddle. Woodward placed the ball and attempted a sort of cross kick to the winder chasing, If it was allowed the Rebels would've scored a try. Instead the ref said they should retake the kick to posts.

This is a tough one.

Sasuke, I just watched a highlights package and unfortunately they didn't show this incident.

What I want to know is, was Woodward's kick for the corner from the kicking tee or out of hand?

If he kicked it from out of hand then yes, I agree with you. If you've indicated you're taking a shot then you have to take a place-kick.

If Woodward kicked it from the kicking tee then I reckon the ref got it wrong on two counts . . . first off he should have played on (and if a try was scored it would have been legitimate) and secondly, he should never have given Woodward a second chance. A miss is a miss.

@rooy,

u might have already seen the footage cos this is a late reply (drinkines and reocevring was the name of my weeked, lol), but yes the rebels kicker woodward (or is it wayward, o_O) kicked fort he corner while the ball was on the kicking tee.

i remember hearing something a game where once a team indicated that they would take a shot at goal, they had to take a shot at goal.
under the laws of the game 21.5 b

(b) If the kicker indicates to the referee the intention to kick at goal, the kicker must kick at goal. Once the kicker has made the intention clear, there can be no change of the intention. The referee may enquire of the kicker as to the intention.

its quite clear that the rebels didnt take a shot at goal, so i got no problems with that, but should they have been allowed another crack at it as u mentioned??? i dont think they should have, but again i vaguley remember hearing that taking the shot again was legaly the right call, only i couldnt find anything specific on it.
