Spies is being spoken about as an impact player. His speed in the last 20 minutes could make a big impact when their is more space on the field.
Vermuelen must start is he is a far more all round player.

Spies is a good lineout option, but the days of exploding off the base are a distant memory. And this guy went to the JJ arm flap tackling school.. So I wouldn't want him back. I prefer warriors.

spies over vermeulen has no merit, vermeulen is the only Bok loosie who can hold his head up high, a real tough warrior whose value in every Bok test, what hes done as a loose forward, lady elizabeth has done for the 2nd row and bizzy has done for the front row.
i still havent seen a loose forward from SA as good as spies was back in 2008-2009, what an impressive specimen of speed and power, very effective like keirean read is today, but speed and power was his weapons of choice, as opposed to reads speed and skill, didnt mean that either of the N08 stars were lacking in the other though, just that they majored in their primary strengths.
if spies can find some of that old form, he would be an assest, but hes been a diluted pale version of his former self from 2010 onwards and SA has plenty of loosies who do deserve to be picked ahead of him.
but he is a former bulls players, and meyer dosnet have a millionth of hansens development coaching skills, so we havent seen the last of spies and thats great news for the All Blacks.

Spies definitely is not even on my shortlist and I am looking at Arno Botha as the back up no 8. He is not a good ball carrier anymore and his caries are vey weak since he lacks grunt. He often enough goes to ground even before he is properly tackled and in doing so dies with the ball. His defence is not up to standard either. Really one of the weak links in the Bulls team.

Spies is a hasbeen, he lost his mojo ages ago.....I wish he hadn't. You must be blind, next thing you'll be calling for Hougaard as FDP's subbie.
