15 Zane Kirchner: Solid under the high ball and had a couple of decent runs, but Kirchner is in many ways the embodiment of the lack of creativity in the Bok backs. 5/10

14 Bryan Habana: When he did receive the ball it was never in space, which made it difficult for him to make an impact. Gave away a costly penalty. Withdrawn early - possibly through injury. 5/10

13 Jean de Villiers: Guilty of running sideways too often and his skip passes only limited the options on a field that was narrower than the standard international pitch. 4/10 (Pretty harsh )

12 Frans Steyn: His try saved Bok blushes but he fell into the Argentinian trap and lost his head on several occasions. 6/10 (Pretty generous)

11 Lwazi Mvovo: Made one good break and ran more metres than any of his teammates, but still made little impact. Missed the only tackle that came his way. 5/10 (Also loses the ball in contact)

10 Morné Steyn: Had to wait half an hour for his first pop at goal, and then shelled it. His missed penalties ultimately cost South Africa an undeserved win, and his general play was disappointing as well. 4/10

9 Francois Hougaard: Made a couple of sniping runs, but often struggled to get the backline going forward because he was denied clean ball at the breakdown. 6/10

8 Willem Alberts: Went missing a bit, even if his tackling was solid enough. Too often he was absent at the breakdown. 5/10

7 Jacques Potgieter: The busiest defender on the South African side, but he made little headway with ball in hand because the crafty Argentinians tackled around the bootlaces rather than trying to take the Boks on physically. 6/10 (This may give some cause to think)

6 Marcell Coetzee: Conceded a couple of penalties, and South Africa were completely over-run at the breakdown in the first half. Taken off with 15 minutes to go. 4/10  (harsh)

5 Andries Bekker: Missed more tackles than he made and had his line-out ball stolen. Withdrawn early in the second half after a bit of a nightmare. 2/10 (Stupid rating)

4 Eben Etzebeth: Easily the best Springbok on the night, he was generally involved in their better moments. Made 11 tackles and beat three defenders during some useful carries. 7/10 (Desrerved got stronger as the match went on)

3 Jannie du Plessis: His penalty allowed Argentina to take the lead early on, which breathed confidence into the hosts. Given that South Africa's game plan relies on discipline and making fewer errors than the opposition, Du Plessis' giveaways continue to be costly. 4/10 (Not up to scratch)

2 Adriaan Strauss: Solid enough, but a much quieter game than last week. 5/10

1 Tendai Mtawarira: Didn't notice him once during the game, though that's probably because he's not used as a ball carrier to the extent that he perhaps deserves. 4/10 (Not up to scratch)

Replacements: Didn't play long enough to warrant a rating.

16 Tiaan Liebenberg:

17 Pat Cilliers: Didn't play long enough to warrant a rating.

18 Flip van der Merwe: Conceded a penalty with his first involvement of the game - literally seconds after coming on. 4/10

19 Keegan Daniel: Showed one moment of intelligence, but otherwise had little time to impress. 6/10 (No time to rate him if he was consisatent)

20 Ruan Pienaar: Most memorable moment of his substitute appearance? Receiving a massive hand-off from Martin Landajo. 4/10 (Nonsesnse)

Interesting many about right but not all.

bekker's rating is spot on....the scrums on his side was a major problem for me. the rest of the game he was nowhere to be seen they played against a more mobile stronger pack. they got caught out. JDV rating is also spot on but frans did nothing amazing either in the gameplan what more can he do ????

Agree with  Sharkbok

I would say the ratings given are in fact wrong in some cases - like the 6 out of 10 given to Francois Steyn and Potgieter - they should be 4 out of 10.   How can a player "who lost his head" be given 6 out of 10.   His only contribution was a charge down try - for the rest he was coasting and produced nothing.   Potgieter was a joke and the sniping runs of Kirchner ended in him not passing the ball and dieing with it - he crashballed with two players on his outside and on one occassion conceded a penalty - whilst on the other one the ball was turned over.

The ratings over-emphasize performance by some players - whilst others are penalized.   For instance the one line out lost be Bekker was the result of an inaccurate throw in by Strauss - not Bekker's fault at all.

agreed sharkbok and mike but i do still feel some of the scores were very generous to the most. during the game i had flashbacks of the harry viljoen era/rudolf destoyli and co....that was how bad it was
