15 Willie le Roux: Brought a calmness to the Springbok backline which was missing against Ireland last week. Looked dangerous on attack and eventually gained 57 metres. 8

14 Cheslin Kolbe: Worked well in tandem with Le Roux and Kurt-Lee Arendse as the visitors’ back three looked dangerous on attack, gaining 82 metres. Also caught the eye with impressive goal-kicking. 8

13 Jesse Kriel: Little interesting to report here. Although he had some attacking runs, he made little headway and was quiet otherwise. 5

12 Damian de Allende: Was prominent as a ball carrier and finished with 45 metres gained. Also did well on defence with nine tackles made. 7

11 Kurt-Lee Arendse: Continues to impress and was once again rewarded with a well-taken try. Kept Les Bleus’ defence busy and finished with a match-high 107 attacking metres. 8

10 Damian Willemse: Although he put in another brave performance, the jury is still out on him as a fly-half. Was solid on attack and defence. 6

9 Faf de Klerk: Came into the starting line-up and was in the thick of the action from the outset until he was replaced in the 60th minute. Also did well off the kicking tee. 8

Big effort from the forwards

8 Kwagga Smith: Was added to the run-on side when Japser Wiese withdrew due to concussion issues and gave a good account of himself during a 60-minute stint on the field. Was lively with ball in hand and asked plenty of questions of France‘s defence. 7

7 Pieter-Steph du Toit: Made little impact during a 12 minute stint on the field before being red carded for a head clash with Jonathan Danty. 4

6 Siya Kolisi (c): Led his troops well, especially when they were reduced to 14 players. Did well as a ball carrier and on defence. 7

5 Franco Mostert: He was at the forefront of their defensive display, with a team-high 10 tackles made, and looked dangerous in other areas. 7

4 Eben Etzebeth: Another fine showing at the coalface of South Africa’s forward effort, especially in the lineouts where he won nine balls and also caught the eye on attack and defence with 42 metres gained and six tackles made respectively. 8

3 Frans Malherbe: Was solid in the scrums and did not take a backward step at the set-piece but quiet in other areas. 6

2 Bongi Mbonambi: Left the field due to an HIA in the first half and made little impact when he came on. Was eventually permanently replaced by Malcolm Marx early in the second half. 5

1 Ox Nche: Like Malherbe, he did little wrong in the scrums but also caught the eye on defence and finished with seven tackles made. 7

Replacements: Despite Du Toit’s red card and Kolbe’s injury, the Boks coped well when they had make some alterations and their bench players came to the fore with fine cameos, especially from the likes of Malcolm Marx, Steven Kitshoff and Deon Fourie. 7

Actually I thought Dud Allende had one of his best tests today….he seemed engaged, likewise Kolisi. Kriel’s open field tackling against fast opponents remains a massive negative.  Mostert had a relatively poor test, he was out of sync in the lineouts. Eben was massive as always.

Hero of the day was Faf, the goat was a no brainer, literally.

But for various reasons we are getting into the habit of losing.

lets say - after watching Mostert for 11 minutes it was clear he was totally useless in line-outs - he missed every one when a ball was thrown to him - so the only lineout player after Du Toit's red card was Etzebeth - which destroy line-out usage in any game, since there is no variety in throw-ins and differences in technique and usage as line-outs.

Moodie for Kriel any day of the week. Actually, RJVR for Kriel with Moodie ahead of Arendse. We can’t have two midget wingers. It’s too much. They both played well but i can’t see that combination being sustainable.

Another exhibition of the bias that keeps favouring SA rugby. Better not to hurt feelings.

French player ratings:

5 Thomas Ramos: Put in a strong first carry of the game and backed that up with an impressive night off the kicking tee, finishing with 20 points that included just one miss. 8

14 Damian Penaud: Such a threat on and off his wing as he displayed once again in the early stages. However, he struggled to impact the game thereafter which was a shame for both France and the spectacle. 6

13 Gael Fickou: Was unusually quiet in Marseille as the defensive fulcrum and glue of this French backline couldn’t keep the blue wall watertight. 5

12 Jonathan Danty: The unfortunate recipient of Pieter-Steph du Toit’s head with 12 minutes on the clock left him with a fractured eye socket. N/A

11 Yoram Moefana: The classy wing was forced to move to centre to cover for the injured Danty and had a strong outing in a position he knows well. Caused the Springboks problems at times with his agility and ability to slip tackles. 7

10 Romain Ntamack: Continued his comeback from injury with a performance he will be pleased with. However, Ntamack didn’t really put his stamp on the game, which was needed when his half-back partner saw red. 6

9 Antoine Dupont (c): Enjoyed a neat and tidy game until the 48th minute when he accidentally took out Cheslin Kolbe and was promptly sent off. 5

Gregory Alldritt unusually replaced

8 Gregory Alldritt: Didn’t have his usual devastating impact in the carry and head coach Fabien Galthie took the unusual step to replace him after 53 minutes. 4

Ad

7 Charles Ollivon: He was a menace in defence early on with a breakdown steal enhancing his strong start. Much like France, fell out of the game during South Africa’s resurgence before coming strong again late on. 7

6 Anthony Jelonch: Won’t have liked being bumped on his backside by Kolbe but otherwise a solid evening’s work from the powerful and workmanlike flanker. 6

5 Thibaud Flament: The second-row was replaced by Romain Taofifenua on 32 minutes so not a happy night for Flament. 4

4 Cameron Woki: The French locks found the tough going against their Springbok counterparts but credit where it’s due as 10 tackles and six lineout wins gives Woki extra credits. 6

3 Uini Atonio: Made a bright start in the loose and after a stint on the sidelines for what we believe was for a HIA, he returned but struggled to have the same impact as the Bok pack flexed its muscles. 5

2 Julien Marchand: The hooker was everywhere early on with ball in hand as his mobility shone through in spades. Couldn’t build on that form though as South Africa took control. 6

1 Cyril Baille: Finished superbly well from close range as he reached out for a well-taken try but he was forced to come off in the opening half. He did not reappear. 6

Replacements: The Boks might have their ‘Bomb Squad’ but France will celebrate the performances of replacement duo Sekou Macalou and Sipili Falatea this evening. Macalou was excellent on the wing as he showed his versatility while Falatea grabbed what proved to be the game-winning try late on. 8

And from memory, the ratings were upped from last night.

They even chose to illustrate the game with the pic of the dangerous but accidental red card action by the french captain and not by the deliberate assault of a SA rugby white player on a French quota player.

Going to be promising. 2025 incoming.

The reason we list was the cards. For some 50 minutes of the game we were a man sow.

Looks to me if all our players are fit we can select a good squad AND be real contenders at the RWC.

The match showed that there is plenty of ability to run the ball. Am back at 13.

What a difference Rassie made in a very short time.

The Boks and there Coaching staff is in a uphill battle.....instead of winning these close games, grinding them out like we use to do, we are losing them now.....what a pathetic showing.....the Balance of this Bok team is long gone as they are being guided by Coaches that don't have a cooking clue what to do next.....even if we loose all existing games, R&N will stay on to steer them even further down the Abyss....lost cause if R&N stays on...

I'm sorry, but Moster was one of the biggest culprits on the park. How many knock ons did he make last night, especially with the try line at his beckoning.

If I compare him to Etzebeth who regularly knock players back Vs Mostert who seem to fold easily or make no ground.

The Boks actually had an advantage with Du Pont off and we should have created some overlaps in the backline.

No matter how we see this, yes it was a dodgy try but they were attacking our goal line.

A loss is still a loss, last week we lost by 3 points to Ireland due to not having a kicker and against France we all of a sudden have 3 kickers who got all their kicks over.

Yet, our pack was week, doesn't help that Du Toit was send off. Will see a new back row with him probably out for 8 weeks.

We lost another game by 4 points, not what you want from this crop of players who won the world cup and Irish aeries.

It is a pity we can't fire Rassie now or should we?

The Boks never manage to go into overdrive in any Rugby game, besides WC Final 2019....that confidence, killer instinct is gone....they still kinda hanging in there, but something is of....the fact that Rassie comes back from being Banned and just takes over all control, cannot sit well with Jacques....there Dynamic has changed otherwise we would have won  those close Games....we cant say we are Champions if we keep losing games...that is not how a winning culture works.

Agreed Moz we have developed a losing habit since Neinaber took over. Both the Irish and yesterdays tests were there for the taking - we were not beaten we lost. We lost partly because of poor selections not having a proper flyhalf to pull the strings and not having a recognised goal kicker Willemse a great player proved yet again he is not a 10. Poor kicking and not equipped to control a game. It was encouraging seeing us trying to play a more attacking style albeit a bit strange having our fullback playing much of the game as first receiver The coaches need to wake up fast to the fact that Willemse is not a 10 Start Libbok at 10 and Willemse at 13 That way you have a proper flyhalf and you retain the creativity and defensive strength of Willemse in the side without disrupting the 12 channel where DA is a physical threat Play Roos at 8 and bring Jenkins in at lock to partner Eben JL or Dan to replace PSDT who I guess will cop a ban
