All Blacks coach Steve Hansen is among those who believe a player strike could be the only way to force the IRB to a global playing international season. (Brave words from Hansen)

Hansen told the media that tradition was influencing boardroom decisions when the welfare of the elite athletes should be at the core of the decisions around getting a better international rugby product and also restricting the demands on international players. (Well said)

At the moment when it comes to the global season too many decisions are made around tradition rather than what is right for the athletes,’ said Hansen.

The New Zealand players are dissatisfied with the current Super Rugby and Test rugby schedules. They are also anti the amount of Tests the All Blacks play each year, which last year was 14. Their best players start training in January and finish the season in the first week of December.

South African players feel exactly the same way. (At least nz manage here top players here it doesnt happen)

The head of New Zealand’s Rugby Players Association says international representative players could take strike action ‘as a last resort’ to press claims for an integrated international season with fewer matches.

Rob Nichol said the International Rugby Players Association will meet on Australia’s Gold Coast during next month’s tour by the British and Irish Lions with moves to integrate the northern and southern hemisphere seasons on the agenda.

AAP reported that the IRPA will then raise the issue with the International Rugby Board in July.

All Blacks coach Hansen told New Zealand media on Sunday that a demonstration of player power may be necessary to force the IRB to take steps to reduce demands on top players.

Nichol said the IRPA expects to find a solution before strike action was necessary. An integrated international season would see northern and southern hemisphere competitions coordinated to allow all test matches to be played within the same window. That is not currently possible because Europe’s Six Nations competition is played in March and April and is not a suitable time frame for tests in the southern hemisphere.

Nichol said New Zealand players wanted their season to start later, allowing a longer gap between seasons, and has called for the elimination of the break in the Super Rugby season for June test matches.

The players instead want an established 16-week off-season instead of the current eight-week break. He said the integration of the northern and southern seasons would not be possible before 2016 when current broadcasting agreements expire.

‘We won’t allow the game’s administrators to follow amateur traditions that are no longer applicable,’ Nichol said. ‘That’s not only competition structure but also commercial. We have to address it.’

Go for it!!!

Yeah, just have a look at the injury ravaged teams in Super Rugby and it is clear that these guys are playing too much rugby. I am 100% behind this idea! Both hemispheres should compromise and meet somewhere in the middle, but whatever happens, they need to reduce the amount of rugby being played by top players, because the current schedule is just not sustainable.

I can't see a compromise ever being met, given the SH seem to want their agenda taken on board fully by the NH !!

That really can't be called a compromise, now can it ? !

Well, I'm afraid you'll find that this so-called NZ strike threat is more about getting extra money in their pockets than it is about sorting out a better Season structure !! Let them strike, who cares ? I actually don't !

The game is almost a year round affair now anyway, not just a Winter sport as it once was. That was apparent as soon as professionalism began.

Thedifferent hemisphere seasons are the problem. If one could play rugby here in summer we would by now be playing in the NH comps for financial reasons.

Is this treat to strike a world wide call or only nz.

Well, as we invented the game, we're hardly going to change our Season to suit you, now are we ? !

Also, it's a Winter Sport, like Cricket is a Summer Sport. And we can't do anything about merging the hemispheres, I'm afraid !! That is even beyond the greatness of NZ and Richie McCaw !!!!

As far as I know, this argument arises every year and has done since professionalism began but it seems only NZ are up for a strike. I say leave them to it, let them do what they want. They can then play with themselves :)
