Habana on the left wing….Mapimpi is bog ordinary.

Jean de Villiers at 12….obvious.

Fourie du Preez…..if you are going to kick you might as well do it intelligently

Beast…..so much better than the pretenders.

Victor to add some lineout dominance and mobility.

The young Schalk….prior to his neck injury he was never out fetched and always on the ball.

Willem Alberts…..our last forward who could really break tackles.

Vermeulen….after a time machine ride back to 2015

Hell yes, Mozart. Now your talking.

I would like to take your time machine back a smidge and go fetch Os.

Willem Albert's? Awesome choice at 7.

Imagine a Schalk, Alberts Vermeulen mix ... ?

WOW!!!

Those were rugby players.

I considered guys like Heinrich Brussow, Ruben Kruger, Jaco Kriel, Francois Pienaar and Schalk Burger for my starting openside flank and in all honesty found them all wanting in comparison to Luke Watson. He was a natural 6, had a very high work rate and was great in the loose.

As for tighthead ... I  didn't consider guys like Jannie Du Plessis, Coenie Oosthuizen, Ballie Swart or Fran's Malherbe as worthy Bok tightheads. Bands stood his ground and was awesome in the tight loose. He also had nice pace and was almost impossible to bring down once he got going. His peach of a try against the All Blacks will always remain a favourite of mine.

I rate Bands as an absolute must in my match 23 ... along side BJ Botha.

Dries Scholtz is not a fan favourite, I know.

I liked his incredible power. His ability to carry 3 guys on his back over the try line. His strong defence.

I know he wasn't the most creative 12 we've ever had but still think of him as someone who would've made a definite impact in every test match.

Other midfield options I'd include in my squad are guys like Rohan Janse van Rensburg and Pieter Muller.

Jaque Fourie was also a class act in his day and so was the combo of De Wet Barry and Marius Joubert.

Still ... my choice at 12 is Scholtz.

Some of those payers are not so recent and by 2015 the players were long gone and desperately poor.    Alberts for instance was useless in defense - slow and broke no real tackles  at all - unlike present loosies who have to be tackled by two to three players  to really bring them down.   Matfiedl after his retirement in 2011 and brought ack by Meyer - was a total dud in 2014 and 2015.

Stop living in the past please - it has noi future.

We are just having a little fun, Mike.

Obviously we're picking these players in their prime ... not on the day of their retirement.

Have a go ... let's see your match 23.

Common ... you know you wanna.

Habana was only better in that he was faster. Mapimpi is better under the high ball though. I still rate Ismaiel ;) Also, how kak that the one player everybody agrees on is never in the side…RG! Feels like the wait won’t ever end.

Plum ... Habana is probably a candidate for the greatest wing of all time.

He didn't just have a lot of pace ... he was a solid defender, unlike Mapimpi ... came off his wing and looked for work off the ball, unlike Mapimpi who is lazy ... created something special out of nothing, unlike Mapimpi whose only strength is his pace.

I don't think Mapimpi will ever be feared like Habana was.

Just my take on the man.

I guess i undervalue Habana a bit. Winger is just such a meh position for me. You get scores like the one that put home in WC and it’s iconic. But even those moments are brief and often times wingers just run tries in. The way the modern game has evolved doesn’t do wingers many favours either.

Everyone's team is the same.
The limited stocks available forces you lot to select the same dweebs.
When you fish out hasbeens like Goosen and include them in the mix you know you've become desperate.
When Elton Jantjies is one of your stars ... wow!
Exactly what is there to get excited about?
The only thing keeping the Goats a float is your rush defence.
Once they work out how to deal with that it's over.
Time to look ahead you say Arthur?
One would swear you have a bright future waiting for you.

Dud Toit has to follow Dud Allende out the door…..he has been all but useless this year. Gets over the ball, gets  cleaned. Gets the lineout call…bungles it. Gets good attacking ball, gets knocked over.   Gets  a chance for an open field tackle, gets stepped.

Time to admit the emperor has no clothes and never did. We can’t have any more of this sentimental nonsense.

No worries about my future thank you CC.

I took care of it for my family and myself many, many years ago.

Sure I may not have many years to go but I have had an eventful, rewarding and exciting life that many others never had and will never have stuck in RSA and and unfortunately on the RAND.

Plus blessed with a wife, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren here in Canada free from the miserable existence you must be going through in RSA with your attitude.

But back on the rugby front some of the picks you made are they family or what.

Puke, Steenkamp and Bands my goodness......

Oh well different strokes for different folks including the BLIND I guess.

If you post a team you can expect folks to differ with your selection  unfortunately you cannot stand other folks comments if they differ with yours.

You have a major problem.

Shame.

I was referring to South Africa's rugby future, Arthur ... I wasn't referring to you personally at all.

Don't be so sensitive.

I am delighted to hear of your successful life abroad.

You made the right decision to take your family away from here.

Wish I had done the same.

Umm ... in case you were wondering about my team ...  I don't know if you noticed Mozart's title to this thread?

Do you really need me to explain it to you?

I was having a little fun with players of yesteryear ...whom I regard as true rugby players in comparison to the pretenders we see today ...

Oh and I don't have any issues with you ripping my team apart.

It's the risk you take when you post a team on here.

Relax man ...

Now say you're sorry ,,, !!

I can probably pick 2 teams like that. We had some good players over the years...I deliberately left out Matfield...I concede that he was one of the greatest ever in his position, but I didn't like his influence on the team culture...they things he said in some post match interviews...and some of the things he says as a commentator for Super Sport....personal dislike...pet hate...

FdP...was very good, but I prefer the 10 to be the decision maker...Morne would never have played all those tests he did if it wasn't for FdP.

Agreed.

Even though picking a team isn't supposed to be a popularity contest ... there is a line drawn in the sand that we don't want crossed. .

I didn't pick him because all he contributed to the team was in the lineout.

There are guys like Bekker that can compete with him ... AND ... they bring a lot more to the the tight loose than he did ... not to mention to the scrum.

He was often tackled backward by smaller men and I've seen him go to ground, get rucked over and give turnover ball away at vital times in the match.

He was a weed.

Besides that ... he has an arrogance about him that I despise. He thought he was better than he really was.

He also brought division to a team.

He wouldn't make my squad of 40.

Now I know what you're going to say ... "what about Luke Watson"?

He had issues with SARU. He was pro giving all races a shot at playing in the green and gold and the people hated him for being so outspoken about it.

He never divided his team and was easily the best player in most of the teams he played for.

It was sad that he never got a fair shake.

He was by far the best openside flanker we had at the time and captaincy came naturally to him..

That is why he's my 6 and captain.

I'm not prone to swallowing the nonsense we find in the media.

They have said wonderful things about our useless current captain and most believe it.

I'm a WP/Stormers man and he served us well, but I didn't like baggage that came with him...not necessarily his own doing...the puke story was taken out of context, so that didn't really bother me at the time...

Clean cunt you dumb fuck - shock, shock The sides selected by a few here are similar as we recognise the best players - it’s not because the SA talent pool is shallow you stupid twat The opposite is true SA right now has so much talent it’s crazy Take fullback for instance - we have Willie , Gelant, Fassi and Willemse who are all world class What about prop - we have Kitshoff, Ox, Gerhard Steenkamp, Nyakane, Malherbe, Thomas, Koch, Wilco Louw and Sadie who are all world class The same applies to every position except flyhalf - but hardly a big issue when you have Pollard, Jantjies, Goosen, Libbok and Hendrikse not to mention Bok U20 sensation Mgomezulu Wake up ignorant twat

Such a pity that this crazy talent you speak of got hammered so badly by the All Blacks 2 weeks back.

I wonder ... what could have caused that embarrassing loss??

They were playing at home ... in front of their home crowd ... at altitude.
