There were two games where bench players made a difference yesterday.

In the case of the Wallabies-All Blacks game Slade came on and nailed the last conversion.   Other players with less coolness could have missed the conversion of the final goal kick and I think both Barrett and Cruden may have mmissed the conversion.   The Slade conversion meant a win for the All Blacks - a big difference in the end.

In the  Racing Metro-Northampton Saints game the conversion of the last goal kick meant the difference between the Saints  getting a bonus point or not - that after the Saints did not convert a goal kick stemming from a try being scored - which would have meant a  draw in the game.   The difference came in with the conversion of the final try of Racing Metro. After Sexton missed an earlier penalty kick from a much easier angle _ and bearing in mind his missed goal kicks under pressure - this kick was handled by Goosen - who nailed it and thereby made a real difference on the log points table .

How is Goosen doing Mike. I am hoping he will really benefit from a new coaching environment and mature into an excellent flyhalf. We are in a happy position re flyhalf right now. Boschoff is also test quality.

Goosen is for the moment the second c hocie flyhalf for Racing  Metro -  Sextton is their first choice.   However, Sexton is leaving  Racing at the end of this season.   In the game on Saturday Sexton was on for 70 minutes and Goosen then came from the bench - and took that crucial conversion that made sure that Northampton Saints never got a bonus point.   Earlier in the game Sexton missed a penalty kick from a much easier angle and the comment of the commentator is that he is not one for pressure kicks.   In the ten minutes Goosen played aside from the goal kick he did well enough.
In the previous two games of Racing Metro Goosen started and had massive games so he is coming on nicely.  Here is his stats for the two games:-
Goosen1/197/24/85113225/30/000/0
Goosen1/01610/28/1210116309/00/000/0

"He is coming on nicely". Well there you have it, a clear cut admission that when the OOm, Cheezer and Vetsak were calling for him to start he was not ready yet.
We have a huge outbreak of foot in mouth disease this weekend.

He is doing exceptionally well in France - and you are too stupid to realize that.   Any player takes time to adjust to French club conditions - something Morne has never really achoieved after morethan a year in France.    Goosen has confirmed his talents as a flyhalf - something you cannot undersand at all since you really do not understamnd what is required from players and always end up being foolish.

Oh sure we want a Bok flyhalf who  doesn't think the jersey is worth fighting for, cashes in his chips in Frogonia, and now plays off the bench for a Frog club.

In fairness, Sexton has been out injured with a broken jaw so, to come back and play in a fixture like this and play as well as he did, was pretty good ! And Stephen Myler normally kicks those sort of goals with ease for Northampton. That was a poor miss by him and he will be pretty annoyed with himself. We were really out of sorts yesterday and the Ref was so hopeless it was untrue ! Really laughably poor !
But we deserved all we got and the fact that Pisi dropped the ball on the way to the line more or less summed it all up for us.....I think he only tore the hamstring as he pulled up to try and catch the ball he was dropping, not dropped the ball because he was injured ! Oh dearie me !!!
Ah well.
As for the last kick of the match, yes it was very good and never looked like missing.
Thoroughly deserved victory.

Sure -when Morne does not even selected and is the third choice flyhalf for hs French club - that is fine - he gets your support all the time.   With Goosen playing two games in succession in the starting line-up and then get to play off the bench in a game - and you went dilly about it.
By the way - the other players who play in France and Japan get your full out support - the silliest case being Francois Steyn - but because Goosen went to play for Racing Metro he is condemned as a money-grabber not prepared to fight for his place in the Springbok team.
You know why you are so silly - it is because you have no idea of player evaluation and is hopelessly prejudiced agaimnst some players.

 This is rich.
Mozart don't you want Frans Steyn at flyhalf for the Boks? The ultimate example of a player turning his back on his country.
Walked into that one doofus.
Do you want me to get highlights up of the passed two games Goosen has played (Excluding against Northampton)? I'll give you a a quick synopsis, he played well.

Oh dear, let me explain the differences to you. Goosen is a youngster who hasn't been an established Bok fixture. Frans is a veteran at an age where players have been fully vetted and seek career rewards.
Secondly Frans left after a dispute about financial promises that apparently weren't kept. It was a reaction of principle, as a practical matter he gained nothing by walking out. I think he made a mistake, and said so at the time.
Thirdly, if S15 success didn't predict test success for Goosen,  why should we get excited by success off the bench in a lesser tournament?
Finally we have just seen what a young Bok flyhalf with real guts can accomplish, no need to pine after fantasies.
Does that help plank?

Haha mike you well dissapointed to hear then Slade has been dropped for the EOYT. And anyone who knows Barratt, knows he is very cool under pressure, they call him "Cool Runnings" haha. So I am sure he would of got the kick, not that it matters.

Have you got proof about the reason for  Steyn throwing his toys out of the cot?   He did not sign an agreement with the Japan club AFTER that incident - he signed before then.   The timing indicated that he was told that he would not make the team and then his ego got the better of him.  After all he was poor throughout Super 15 this year and would definitely have destroyed Meyer's backline game plan.
Does that help plank?

I still think Goosen is a useful player. Numerous injuries early in his career seem to have slowed his progress, but he'll come good!

Put it this way, I would not want to lose an on form Goosen to the French national side.

I get what Moz is saying here, sure, plenty of our players have been lured to the power of foreign currencies, but most of those players were older or had been overlooked by Springbok management. Goosen took of while he still had every chance of getting into the Springbok mix.

Never thought Goosen was anything special.

Inconsistent ... injury prone ... afraid of contact because of it ...

We have the right two flyhalves in the Bok mix. No loss to SA rugby if you ask me.

I'll put a name forward ... Jaco Kriel ... he is the best opensider in the country and will hopefully receive his well deserved call up after the final this weekend.

I also believe the Lions props with Akker vd Merwe have made a massif difference to the Lions season.

CC  Kriel is an interesting case. You could pick him provided you wanted to play a very attacking game and provided you played a tight 5 and not 4. With Vermuelen and Burger providing the grunt Kriel could be considered.  Tough on that workhorse Marcell.
What troubles me is that a few flash moments and a guy is a hero. But what is the real contribution over 80 minutes? Does it beat a Coetzee or Louw? Is he a fetcher? Is Kriel an ideal impact player - start him off the bench? Love that apce he has. But in fact all he is is a backline player playing as a forward - 100 kg. Naturally he looks great in the open.

Beeno ... he punches above his weight ... and then some. Like Stanely Ketchel.

He hasn't had an inconsistent season as you're implying. Leading tri scorer.

I take it you haven't been watching much Currie Cup this year, right?

Why then do you feel the need to comment?

Marcell isn't a natural 6. He loses the plot at times and has to be told to go back to basics. In fact I'd say Stegman is a better 6 than Coetzee.

Kriel's natural game is that of an opensider ... plus he's awesome in the loose with a high work rate, great hands and has pace to burn. Hands down a better 6 than Coetzee will ever be.

Flo is a retreaded blindside flanker. He's cumbersome and disappears in the last 20.

Personally I reckon he should consider retiring from test rugby.
