I note we're on the same page re Frank Bunce. I'd love to hear your opinion re Walter Little who without Bunce at his side I believed to be ordinary although as a pairing  they were dynamic. Now whether it was Bunce who made Little look good or whether their pairing brought about the dynamic I'm not quite sure. I see the same example in Horan and Jason Little, a great combination but without Horan at his side Jason appeared to be ordinary....well in my opinion anyway. Your thoughts?

 @Denny

Most people speak of them in the same breath - I can't really think of Buncey without thinking of Walter Little - who was probably very under-rated, they reached their peak during 95, and 96.  You're probably right though, I don't think Bunce would've been the same player without Little, in fact I can't really think of too many centre partners he played with outside of Walter, maybe Lee Stensenes - but the fact that most people think of them as a combination rather than individauls probably indicates then sum was greater than the parts.  I defintely think of the Little and Horan combo in the same way although Horan was fantastic as an individual as well.

I can think of some great SA centres, but I can't think of too many great combos (my ignorance only) JdV and Fourie formed a very powerful partnership I thought.

I still shake my head in disbelief when I think of the Boks winning the '95 WC.......Lomu on one wing, a great flyhalf in Merthens and one of the best centre pairings of all time.....a miracle win!

But back to the debate, I remember Walter Little playing for the Blues afterwards, he was never really that good, maybe he was at the end of his time, I don't know, but Bunce just suddenly dropped off the scene. The AB's centre pairings since have not reached the level of greatness set by those two and maybe that's a good thing for Bok rugby LOL

I also always wonder how many players Larkham made look good, I mean would the Ozzie centres at the time have had the same dynamic feeding off a plodder? All very interesting and it probably really doesn't matter perhaps we should just be grateful to have witnessed greatness.

 They worked as a pair, but as individuals they were good at best, nothing special at all. Bunce was a solid hard nut, Little was a playmaker of sorts. Give me Horan and Little anyday
