He held the Bools together well today....and would probably have engineered a win if Libbok had simply passed to the open man. Kolisi continues to be man handled at ruck time. He is not looking worthy of a starting spot, let alone the captaincy. Other calls: Esterhozen and Am continue to do well.....the centre situation remains up for grabs. Allende tractored around a bit....but I ask again, did anything come of anything he did. Kriel also botched a try scoring opportunity. Whereas Esterhozen did well to power over and Am made the centre break ofthe weekend. Nkosi showed a lot of heart today, he enhanced his chances. Papier continues to look underdone, we need a second scrummie whose name isn't Papier or Schreuder. The lock situation is obvious ....Etzebeth and the giant RG Snyman who offloads and wins balls against the throw. How feeble was Snickerling today? Dan du Deysel actually had a decent game today....but so did Thor with solid graft, an important turnover and excellent lineout work at the back. Most disappointing this weekend was the flaccid scrummaging of Kitshoff and Malherbe. The Beast is looking more and more like our best scrumming option at loosehead. Stephanie hopefully isn't badly hurt, but he looks like a confused player.....no factor in the lineouts, flaccid at the rucks and away from the action on the left wing. Why isn't he used at the back....to counter Vermeulen for example, who had easy pickings at the back. So few players showing they really want the jersey, so it was good to see RG Snyman take on the vaunted Stormers pack and dominate.

Pollard has always seemed like a player who could one day be a Bok captain. Easily the best flyhalf in SA, and perhaps the best backline player in SA.
Vermeulen can vary his game because he has the complete skill set. If his team is winning more possession, he is a strong ball carrier. If his team is losing more possession, he is good at the breakdown, or he provides a cover defence.
The donkey twins can only be ball carriers.

Take quotas out of the equation and Moffie makes a decent point but having a black captain who's not that far off deserving his starting spot is more valuable to us right now.
The reality is that we have to make a few compromises. Players like Bongi Mbonambi and Lukhanyo Am are close enough to Akker van der Merwe and Jesse Kriel respectively to warrant giving them the #16 and #13 Springbok jerseys without sacrificing too much in terms of quality. Same goes for Siya Kolisi and the captaincy. Rather Kolisi as captain than 2 or even 3 more compromised selections.

The "donkey twins" would probably be the 2nd and 3rd names on my Springbok teamsheet (after Marx of course).
Dan in particular has had an outstanding season and it's puzzling to me why he's not regarded as an automatic Springbok selection based on form.
A loose trio of Dan, Jean-Luc and Kolisi/Kriel/Kwagga/Schoeman would be the envy of the rugby world.

Boks aside for a second, I was quite impressed with Ruben van Heerden as well today for the Sharks, big effort making 18 tackles, strong physically and always looking to get involved.

JL Dup probably had his best game that I've seen and was a big improvement over the average Jacques Vermeulen. Nkosi was brave and accurate under the high balls after spilling an early one, and also much more secure in his tackling.

It's depressing that fans have accepted the quota selection travesty.....Kolbe, Nkosi, Dyantyi, Am, Bongi, and the Beast are legitimate Boks. Willemse has the talent as does Bosch... for bench roles. Kolisi was good during the RC last year. But he has never been effective in the kind of trench warfare that the WC entails and his form loss on the YE tour and subsequently has been significant. Right now he is not a merit Bok, let alone a captain. If we go down the quota path yet again we will fail.....why is cricket supposedly on a merit basis and rugby has to compete with one hand tied behind the back.

And Mozart believes that the following represents "tractoring around" amd I ove also the stats fopr his wonderful Esterhuizen:-

                                     De Allende                Esterhuizen

Balls passed                         14                             15

Balls Carried                        14                             12

Meters gained                      71                             37

Clean Breaks                         1                               0

Defenders beaten                   5                               2

And then the Bulls would have won if it was not for Libbok not passing the ball  - that is what one calls supreme BS,   The Bulls was losing by 23 - 15 when Pollard missed a kick at goal and all the Stormers had to do was to kick the ball out of touch and the game would have been over.  They tried to make a run for a bonus point win and  won by only one point because of the fact that the Bulls defense was piss poor.   Never a chance of winning.

Problem is despite all his faults Du Plessis today out-performed from a defense perspective the pedestrian Pollard.   So now Pollard should be the Bok captain.   Why - he was captaining the losing team?

And the Snyman myth continues unabated - also since h\the only positive was falling on Du Toit and getting nothing in return.

How much BS can one take from the normal source?

Falling on hahaha....I prefer the commentator's term 'dominated'. Which is what happened. As for your Bulls were 'losing by 23 to 15'....what pray, did the Stormers do to get from 23 to 24 points? Huh? The rest is all addled brain stuff not worth commenting on. You are just bitter Tokkie because superior athlete Snyman dominated Snickerling and Stephanie.

Mozart

You really are totally incoherent.    Clumsy and fairly useless is what Snyman was and that is a fact.    Snyman dominated nobody - anybody who states that is a  fool.

If there was a dominant lock today it was Wiese.- not  Snyman.    By the way when did Du Toit play at lock today?

Nonsense.....the Sharks were ahead at that point and a man up. There was every reason to go for the poles....as they continued to do and won the match. Your theory that you never kick for poles is just as thick as never kicking for the corner.

Exactly Mozart - when a team is ahead  and one man up -- you go for a try rather than make an uncertain kick at goal.   I say uncertain because from what I have seen the wind was problematic.   Fact is they missed two of those kicks.

The Bok squad is one big compromise. All so that the tearful black folk can be brought into something that they've never earned the right to.be a part of.

They cup their hands and we give them handouts ... if we don't, they thrash about on the floor, calling us racists .. "Boo hoo .. it's all so unfair .sniff .. sniff".

Have you ever heard of this absurdity anywhere else in the world?

The nonsense that Kolisi is almost a merit pick as an openside flank and captain is laughable. He's simply not good enough in either aspect and never has been. Anyone who claims this, is either desperate to see undeserving black faces on the pitch or a complete rugby noob.

There is absolutely no value in fielding an incompetent captain who needs his handy held with the simplest of on field decisions ... nor is there any value in selecting a player who has no clue what his role is on the field. He simply gets in the way.

We have a choice. Select a team to compete and challenge the best the world has to offer ... or select a side to appease the tearful masses and their supporters like Redneck.
One will bring us victory .. the other will bring us shame ... as we've seen countless times before.

And then the Bulls would have won if it was not for Libbok not passing the ball  - that is what one calls supreme BS

The incident in question happened about 8 - 10 or so minutes from full time (I'm going on the time I called it on the live commentary, I don't have the exact match time stamp) when the Bulls attacked down the left, Libbok only had to draw Willemse and pass to Rossouw for a certain try, but instead chose to break inside. Had that try been scored and converted the Bulls would have been within 1 point with 7 or 8 minutes left to play. Absolutely would have put them in with a chance to win it.

You should pay attention to these key moments in games, Mike. You keep beating on other people for knowing "nothing" about rugby, but then you can't even identify the obvious moment when the Bulls were one pass away from putting themselves right back in it.

Far more than stats like meters made, these are the isolated moments of decision and execution where games are won or lost. Libbok's stats say he made 100m in just 23 minutes on the field, beating 4 defenders and making 2 clean breaks - but he couldn't make a critical scoring pass when he needed to.

I'm not convinced that Kolisi makes the starting lineup, at best he is mediocre......makes the odd burst and nothing more. What it means is that the player with favorable pigmentation just has to be an average or mediocre player to achieve national honors. The bar is set low simply because the powers that be a) have lower standards and b) have a political agenda. Have a look at the way the country is run as an example.

The Bok is dead, get over it, call it anything else but Springboks.

Same old childish drivel I've come to expect from the likes of Klown and Baboon-ou.
You little chaps carry on burying your heads in the sand and getting yourselves into a froth every time a black player gets selected for the national team . . . and carry on pretending that I support quotas if it makes you feel better.

There may be a place for the Du Preez twins in the Bok squad, they don't deserve to start however. Vermuelen is one of our most important players, RWC's aren't the the place to be changing the spine of the team if you don't have to.
Making Pollard captain doesn't sit well, let him focus on his game with no extra responsibilities.
Papier needs more gametime that's a fact and why Pote plays Ivan Van Zyl is beyond me. How he got into the Bok squad last year is beyond me, hopefully he isn't in it for the Rugby Championship or RWC. Jantjies of the Stormers has a bit about him and we may see his name in the Bok squad, if not then there's no harm as hes green and needs time to develop further.

Arsehole ... you've been a supporter of the blackman over your fellow Caucasians for many moons .. calling on them to be included in everything ... don't pretend otherwise.

It's typical of your kind.

Being aware of quotas and accepting it is two totally different things.

I suppose you sing their national anthem with passion too, huh?

Spineless as ever.

You should really consider packing wifey dearest up and going back to where you guys come from.

Vermeulen is only good for the first twenty ... then he's done. He also seems a little injury prone. That's usually what happens to the old.

Why waste a spot on this elderly man when we have a perfectly good 8 in Dan Du Preez. He's had a cracker of a season and is by far the best 8 we have.

Just because he's an ex Freestater doesn't mean he qualifies for Bok duty.

Use your head, Shezza!!

Papier has a very long way to go. He shouldn't be considered for national duty till he's ready ... if ever.

I took a careful look what Vermeulen was up to.   In  a game with a substantial number of ball carries  the stats for the number 8's in the game was as follows:-

Vermeulen      -      6  tackles  -   2 missed tackles

Van Dyk         -     14 tackles  -   1 missed tackle

Vermeulen since his return to Springbok rugby - other than the first two tests in June last year -has been consistent in one respect - his extraordinary low work rate.    Taking the above into account there is enough evidence to suggest he plays for only about 30% actively in games - even when he is on the field of play for the full game.

Classical ignorance on Vermeulen. He made a key turnover close to the Bools line....he got back to field a try threatening kick through....he was at the coal face in the rucks....and he took ball at the back of the lineout, one take off an errant throw prompting a commentator compliment. Vermeulen isn't standing off the ruck doing the process runs and process tackles which pad the stat count like so many of our loosies, you know who I mean....he plays the whole field, often getting back to field tactical kicks. The man is technically miles better than any other SA number 8.......and when he empties the tank at the WC he will be just as dominant as he was in the first two Pom tests last June.

Two incidents that really happened in the whole match suddenly became the norm for the match  as a whole - indeed  funny stuff and total BS about that Mozart term "process tackles".    If you do not know by now that it is BS then you will never know.   But then you know what Alberts and Matfield routinely did and now try and ascribe it to other players is really funny.

So the magnificent contribution  of Vermeulen did not prevent the Stormers from having 65% ball possession as against the 35% of the Bulls.   Why don't you think before writing tripe on site?

The Stormers had 65% of possession huh? I'll give you a chance to correct this embarrassing mistake. But I guess if the Bools had 58% of possession, according to your logic, that must all be down to Vermeulen. What a joke you are Tokkie.

OK  I was wrong - but then what did that 58% represents?   2 tries  - one that should never have happened because he Stormers wanted to try and make a run for a fourth try and fouled it up - knowing full well they were 8 points ahead after the time for the match was up.    No Mozart - the Bulls were thoroughly outplayed and Vermeulen did not produce anything that gave them a chance to win.

I have looked at Vermeulen's contribution for the Bulls in all matches played this year and he was always a low production player.    There are two things virtually totally absent from his game and those are  -

*    passing the ball; and

*    becoming involved in attacking play other than crashballing.- in the last game he carried the ball 13 times for an 18 meter gain,  not even a 1,5 meter per carry gain.

The above argument has two sides - the one a dream of performance that never happened - and the cruel fact that Vermeulen is not producing the goods he did 5 ears ago,

'Ok I was wrong'........'but they were thoroughly outplayed'.....but hold on the Bools didn't have 35% possession....the Bools had 58% of the possession and 63% of the territory. 'But they were thoroughly outplayed'. Let me explain the game to you Tokkie. The Stormers hit the game with huge energy and got 12 points ahead after 20 minutes.....after that the Bools dominated but made crucial errors time and again near the line. They should have won the game.....and Snyman was the dominant forward on the park.....by miles. Stop talking rubbish and then rather than really admitting it, doubling down on your discredited argument. It's tedious.

How did Snyman dominate opposing locks?   He took line-outs and  when du Toit was near him he knocked on the ball and fell clumsily on Du Toit.   Before and after that zero else.   Open your eyes or better still open your closed mind and maybe you would be regarded as a logical contributor worthy of debating issues.,

Stephanie.....hahaha...he was so intimidated by Snyman he never even jumped for the kickoff dropping in his zone. So he submarined under Snyman who could have been hurt except he fell on top of the dominated Steph. Then I read all sorts of South African bunkum about Steph being an injury worry for Erasmus Head.......when he walked down the tunnel swinging his arms. Nobody with a serious shoulder injury swings his arms. Looked a bit like a no mas moment, intimidated by the larger superior athlete, who knows how to offload and can actually guarantee his lineouts. It might take Stephanie a few months to get his confidence back. In the meantime there will be a lot of hand wringing. But there's no need....with Etzebeth, Snyman and Mostert we are well served.

We need an 8 that's all over the park, all the time ... not one playing in spurts of 10 minutes and gasping for breath the next 10.

Vermeulen was an awesome player ... in his day. Those days are gone.

He has had ample time to work on his fitness this year but it seems he's been assured of his spot in the Goat mix so why bother. The hunger we saw in him when he was younger is also a thing of the past. He's just winging it now ... waiting for the big payday ... eager to claim another world cup under his belt ... like Matfield ... without contributing anything of value.

Some even say that we should wrap him up in cotton wool ... save him for the WC ... limit his time on the field ... to prevent injury. My response to that is ... if he's the answer at 8 then why is it necessary to protect him like that?

I'll tell you why ... he's old ... a spent force ... with a body that's taken a beating over the years ... a body that can't anymore ... tired ... in need of a little lie down.

It's time to move on.

Mozart ... you tried your best to have us believe that Matfield was the star of the show under Meyer ... I suppose we can expect the same from you regarding Vermeulen.

Regarding the capt. What options are there?

Beast is not a natural leader ... he tends to take things personally and this results in a sulking, capt the rest of the match.

Eben is just too damn dumb ... besides that ... we need him to play the enforcer role and being the diplomat just doesn't suit his style of play.

Kolisi is a moron ... constantly in search of a helping hand. He shouldn't be anywhere near the Goats.

Marx doesn't have enough experience to lead a side.

Lood seems a little injury prone. We need a capt on the field.

Jaco Kriel won't make the mix ... the quota is assured of the 6 jersey.

Whiteley is also injury prone. Besides that, he's not the best in his position.

Vermeulen is just too damn old ... and also not the best in his position.

That leaves us with ... Pollard.

Have you seen that load f utter garbage Mozart came up with about Du Toit and his happiness about the injury to Du Toit caused by the clumsy Snyman.

Do I understand it correctly - a shoulder injury prevents a player from walking?????????

I have seen virtually limitless hatred of players - but the above BS takes the cake.

I think that Pollard is not an inspiring captain - he was the captain of the 2013 Rugby WC team and in the final lost the plot.   Maybe I should be less harsh and say that we should be patient with him on that score - after all in that game the clueless Esterhuizen knocked on a ball with an open tryline in front of him that would have won the game for the Juniors,

I stated before that Pollard is the best flyhalf we have - my reservations are about his captaincy,   I think Pote Human is not an idiot.   He handles his players very well -  for example Nyakane dominating Kitshoff on Saturday - but he does not see Pollard as a captain and used everyone else besides him before he ended up with Pollard,   Why?         .

Mike ... Mozart will never say anything positive about Du Toit. If he did, it would mean that you were right and he was wrong.

What are the chances of that EVER happening?

His reaction above is a little over the top ... but that's because you ruffled his feathers. His emotions got the better of hm and he tried to be hurtful.

As for walking properly with a shoulder injury ... haaaaahahahaha ... unless he's walking on his hands, it shouldn't be an issue. Maybe Mozart enjoyed a little too much wine with his lunch and saw things that weren't really there.

He's a strange one.

I don't like Pollard as a captain either. Nothing about him inspires one ... but who else. He is the best in his position and so should be a starter every match.

Jaco Kriel brings a brotherhood to the mix. The boys under him would give their best for him and that's what you want.

Who would you suggest, Mike. Lood? You really think he'll be able to inspire his boys more so than Pollard?

I dunno.

We don't really have a stand out captain, do we? I guess anyone will do ... just s long as it's not that damn fool Kolisi.

Today you say you want merit selections! It all goes to show what a profound effect I have had on you.

I would go for Eben as captain. He commands huge respect and clearly is far smarter than that halfwit wee cc thinks.

Rassie needs to say to Vermuelen show me what you can do for 80 minutes.

I suspect Vermuelen is coasting. Probably learned the art from the haplles pap Matfiled.

Cioetzee is the best number 8 I have seen this year.

Steph the best 7.

I was watching what happened in team discussion on the field on Saturday and noticed one thing in particular,   The person that did the talking was Du Toit - not Kolisi.   That indicates to me that the effort of players was enhanced in what he told them.   It was not only in that game the case - but in virtually all the games this year.

Fact is I would prefer him to be captain ahead of Pollard - but am afraid Erasmus is using Kolisi as captain to get past some other ridiculous  quota selections like Am and co.
