Post Mortem of the Boks vs Wales 2nd test

Sharkbok allow me to explain. The Sharks front row were flat. They are tired. Managment of them has been atrocious. No central contracting system.
Then we have pap matfield - he must go. Then we have Flip short of game time and not quite his best. Result pack did not do well. Only Duanne and Flouw played really well.
Consequence - big Welsh backs got lots of good front foot ball.
The pack was the big problem. It did not dominate for reasons mentioned. lack of intensity until the end when the fear of losing lifted the guys for a supreme effort.


 

 Without the "Willie" magic once again in this test the Springboks were absolutely one of the poorest performers  in the Green and Gold.
The rot starts at the top.
Poor management.Poor selections.Poor captaincy.Poor veterans.
This squad will not make the quarters in WC15.
The Welsh deserved to win but a silly foul by their #15 cost them the victory.

I already gave my assessment elsewhere.  In essence our inside backs and center pairing is deficient - Pietersen never was and never will be a decent 13.   Serfontein struggled because of the gaping holes in defense on both sides.   Morne was clueless and it is time we start looking at alternatives at scrumhalf.
The sooner we get the Tight 5 right the better it would be - Matfield looks good in  line outs - but that is where his usefulness ended.  He is physically not up to standard .  Flippie is at best a card seeking individual and a serious selection risk.   
Alberts is a serious liability while he was on the field and to be quite frank - I was not overly impressed by Burger either.  He tried to look busy - but was not really successful with that achieving nearly nothing in the process.        

The ratings of 365 are pretty much the same as the assessment that I gave players
5 Willie le Roux:
Like most of his teammates was somewhat error-prone before the break, but then showed his class with ball in hand - including a crucial try inside the final 10 minutes.

14 Cornal Hendricks:
The rookie wing looked threatening with ball in hand, including a sublime break late in the game that set up Willie le Roux's try and another brilliant run that resulted in the match-winning  penalty try.

13 JP Pietersen:
Some early handling errors, but once he settled made all but one of his tackles and also had some handy runs.

12 Jan Serfontein:
Was rock solid on defence, missing just one tackle, and got over the advantage line a few times.

11 Bryan Habana:
Looked for work and won a crucial turnover penalty early in the second half, while he had a couple of promising runs.

10 Morné Steyn:
His game was littered with errors, but on defence he stood his ground and came into his own late in the game.

9 Fourie du Preez:
He struggled behind a pack of forwards that was unusually sloppy and only looked at ease once the game opened up late in the second half.

8 Duane Vermeulen:
Early mistake, when the sun appeared to be in his eyes, then missed a tackle and struggled to make ground with ball in hand. Also stood off the scrums far too early. But on defence he was a monster.

7 Willem Alberts:
Made nine tackles in his 20-odd minutes on the field and missed one.

6 Francois Louw:
He was one of the more accurate Boks, made his tackles (which went into double figures) and carried hard - with little reward.

5 Victor Matfield (captain):
Made his tackles and was dominant in the line-outs, including his customary poach.

4 Flip van der Merwe:
His eagerness cost his team at times, as he conceded a couple of penalties and was yellow carded in the second half. Continued working hard.

3 Jannie du Plessis:
His scrumming power was very evident in this game, even though he was handed two questionable penalties. Was very effective on defence.

2 Bismarck du Plessis:
Crucial turnover early in the match, but his line-out throwing not always accurate and he missed a few tackles.

1 Tendai Mtawarira:
Powerful in the scrums and made a mountain of tackles. Didn't make much ground with ball in hand.

Replacements:

16 Schalk Brits (on for BW du Plessis, 65th min):
Had one decent run, but then knocked the ball on. Made all his tackles.

17 Gurthrö Steenkamp (on for Mtawarira, 65th min):
Monstered the scrums after he came on, but could work harder off the ball.

18 Coenie Oosthuizen (on for JN du Plessis, 58th min):
Made all his tackles, but made no ground with ball in hand.

19 Lodewyk de Jager (on for van der Merwe, 45th minute - blood):
Not enough time to be rated.

20 Schalk Burger (on for Alberts, 24th min):
His workrate, energy and physical presence had a huge impact on the game.

21 Ruan Pienaar (on for Steyn, 23rd min - blood):
Not enough time to be rated.

22 Wynand Olivier (on for Serfontein , 74th min):
Not enough time to be rated.

Some players were over-rated by up to 2 out of 10.  Burger was active - but nFlip ot effective at all.   Same with Matfield and Alberts.  At least the following were rated 1 out of 10 too high:-
Pietersen,  Morne Steyn, Fourie du Preez and  Flip van der Merwe (serious ill-discipline).
I do not argue with the stats quoted - what made a serious sifference is the effectiveness of plays involving the above players.
The other issue is that Hendricks did well when put into space by Le Roux - but L Roux is given less points out of 10 than Hendricks.   Without Le Roux the test would have been lost and badly so.         

Sharkbok  do you get it now, Old Scumbag has just laid out the 233 rd version of his standard diatribe. Absent Matfield, Wille and Hendricks we don't win that game...one vet and two newer players. It's easy when you aren't biased.

Mozart 
I wanted more points for Willie and less for the two poor geriatrics.  They definitely deserve nothing more than 4 ratings.
Be it as it may - even the present ratings is dismal enough - and should show warning lights flashing all over the show that things have gone awry with Meyer going back more and more to his non-performing pals and favourites.
