RWC winner odds
  • New Zealand: 11/8
  • South Africa: 7/2
  • England: 4/1
  • Wales: 8/1
  • Ireland: 18/1
  • Australia: 25/1
  • France: 40/1
  • Japan: 40/1
Ireland is obviously low because of playing the ABs. Australia handily beat the ABs in the RC, at 25/1 they look like smart bet.

25/1 for aussies seems about right to me... would have to win 3 big matches in a row... I think this aussie team good for 1 maybe 2 wins in a row at best...

They haven't even decided on fly half........... let alone a decent goal kicker... happily be surprised but wouldnt be advising anyone to jump onboard the gold...

History is against Ireland. They've come to the tournament with powerful squads and floundered in the past. Can they take the next step?

Past Results:

  1. 1986: Australia (33) vs Ireland (15) - QF
  2. 1991: Australia (19) vs Ireland (18) - QF
  3. 1995: France (36) vs Ireland (12) - QF
  4. 1999: Argentina (28) vs Ireland (24) - QF Play-Offs
  5. 2003: France (43) vs Ireland (21) - QF
  6. 2007: Didn't Qualify for QFs
  7. 2011: Ireland (10) vs Wales (22) - QF
  8. 2015: Ireland (20) vs Argentina (43) - QF

In 2007, Ireland were amongst the three favourites, alongside France and New Zealand. It was a very strong side pre-WC.

New Zealand's pedigree, and winning record away from home in recent times is a considerable advantage, even though they remain a largely unimpressive unit. It will be quite the achievement for Ireland to win. It would certainly add some interest to the WC, and would also be unprecedented success for Irish rugby.

England are the more likely winner, but Australia can realistically defeat them. If Australia turn up and bring a determined level of physicality, they'll be a handful.

South Africa are favourites. It seems almost ridiculous that they should lose, but we've already been bitten by the confidence bug in even unlikelier circumstances. It really depends on the Boks, if they allow Japan to control their own possession this becomes Fiji 2007, or worse. If they play smart, and accurate, they will keep them at arms length. Problems arise when our line is breached. If we keep opponents in front of us, we can be very difficult to pry open. One missed assignment and we look helpless. Against Australia earlier in the season we only made 77% of our tackles. Throughout the season we've been missing tackles at critical moments of games for big gains. We don't possess a defence that can reliably close out a game.

Wales should really beat France. They are much the better side.

SA  beat Australia earlier in the season with 15 players sent to NZ early and  beat them 36-17m enough to go on his wildly inaccurate drivel.   Lizatjie is the simpleton who write on site that the SA performances in the RC and winning the trophy was worse than it was in 2015 when the Springboks lost all three matches and ended up bottom of the log,    The logic was that of the worst simpleton ever on site.

Unlike in the 2015 WC when the Springboks lost against Japan he is clueless about why it happened and praised the total failures in the game and attack the better players in the game.

However, what happened in the Fiji 2007 game in the WC quaterfinal?   The Springboks won 37 -20 in that game - so what was "even worse" about that,   Should they have won by 40 points dimness?

One cannot make out what was the rest of the dribble about?   In the series the Springboks defense was very good - but for a few tackles missed by individual players like Mostert prior to one of the AB tries.   In 4 matches played the Springboks gave away 3 tries.  What the hell is wrong with the birdbrain?

SA beat Australia at Ellis Park after Oz was the better side for much of the first half....and Australia beat NZ convincingly at home. They are always WC over achievers, beating us twice to one loss. There, now you're informed.

I can only see the top 4 as contenders. If the All Blacks can beat England, I think they have a good chance of winning the world cup.

Shifty Schiff-Strzok

How do you get to the fib about - "SA beat Australia at Ellis Park after Oz was the better side for much of the first half."?

The score after 24 minutes in the game was SA leading 14-3.  Then the Aussies scored a converted try in minute 24.   They never scored a point after minute 24 and neither did the Springboks.   That does not make for the Ausies being the better team for much of the first half, but if SS-S says so how dare I disbelieve his twaddle?

Anyway - that is the kind of tripe you routinely write on site.   In the second half the Springboks dseservedly outscored the Aussies by 21 points to 7 - but that is not material according to SS-S argument.

In the first half Oz  had 61% of possession and 65% of the territory...in the match as a  whole they beat 26 tackles to 15 by the Boks, made13 clean breaks to 10. They blew it and botched several tries. A knockout game against them in Japan would be a toss up .

Yet they never led in points and was behind in the first 24 minutes by 14 points to 3.   And in the second half they scored exactly one try as against 3 scored by the Springboks.  Two tries to 5 shows ZERO dominance in the game.

And then we have the 15 top players sent to New Zealand before the game with shrieking hysteria about the arrangement from the normal Idiot Speakers,   No SS-S you are a fool and will always be one until you get over your prejudice mental disease.

Well if you couldn't see the Aussies were competitive in that game, it simply confirms your poor grasp of what's happening on the field. Here's the big picture, generally we win at home and lose in Oz. The last time we won in Oz was back in 2013...the last time they beat us at home was in 2011 at sea level.
So expecting Oz to win at Ellis Park was unrealistic. They showed enough to suggest they would be a challenge at a neutral WC venue.

At 18/1 Ireland are over the odds....seems like the smart bet.

Yes, England won 7 from 41 times since 1905, last time being 7 years ago at home....only 2 victories away from Twickers...in 114 years! Yes, clearly you've got this. No luck needed. Poms FTW!
