Have read a lot on this forum and elsewhere about the predictable kick and chase approach of the South African teams and the need to go towards a ball in hand running approach like the NZ teams instead in an effort to play exciting rugby and embrace the "future" of the sport since the rules seem to constantly be changing to encourage that style

Interestingly enough in the past couple weeks there have been a couple articles by commentators and an opinion piece by Deans that points towards the predictable running style of the NZ teams as the reason for the Aussie teams dominance this year. Knowing the NZ teams will keep ball in hand enables them to put pressure on the breakdown and in the tackle and wait for the inevitable mistakes that will come.

A succesful team has to have the balance and ability to kick for territorial field position, run with ball and,  yes, execute the kick and chase. This requires a flyhalf that can read the situation correctly and execute what is most appropriate and effective. Bulls have caught fire as M Steyn has found his groove, not only with the boot but some great offloads. Cruden also has the ability  to run and kick and has the Chiefs up there in 3rd. Cooper is good with both adn has the Reds in 2nd, Brumbies have a running flyhalf (Toomua) and a kicking inside centre (Lealifano) and the Cheetahs have consistently shown the best balance of any of the SA sides all competition long and have won more games than any other so far. How much better will the Saders be with Carter back? although I think their problems go deeper as Bleyendall has not done badly.

Given this indication of how successful the balanced approach is then to me the Waratahs are the dark horse of the tournament should Berrick Barnes get healthy soon and take over the flyhalf position. They will be very difficult to beat as he would bring an aspect with the boot (both at goal - where McKibbin is just not good enough - and territorially) that Foley just does not have while also retaining a lot of the same ability with ball in hand. Big pack, attacking fullback, good (if not great) backline - all the ingredients.

@oimatey,
i agree completely and the predictable running game of the kiwis in general have had me worried for a while now.
i also often get frustarted at watching the crusaders spread the ball out wide, and not staightening up the line of attack, or the highlanders just run without any direction.
i would rather see the predictable running game of the kiwis then the predictable kicking game of the saffas, but a more balanced and controlled style is better, IMO thats what thAll Blacks do, so i dont know how the All Blacks in the NZ spXV franchises havent helped spread this theme, o_O
i think the reds and brumbies are the most balanced teams in the comp at the moment,t hey have the ability to play all styles and are very inteligent at applying it. the bulls are also getting very close, but like last weeekends games, they still rely heavily on the boot of morne, but why wouldnt u, as thats paying of dividens at the moment.

IMO the waratahs are better of with foley at flyhalf then barnes, foley has uncanny knack to attack with ball in hand. he plays more like a rugby league flyhalf, where his passing game is a real asset to the waratahs and coaching maestro cheikas attacking rugby plan.
i dont think theyre the dark horse, but i do think they and the cheetahs are the most improved team from 2012.

i also dont think the waratahs will make the finals, this is the closest tournament to date and in the middle of the comp, the brumbies and reds are really hitting their straps and are the form teams, the saffas are in a dog fight with each other, but still making head way, while the kiwis are in a bit of a slump at the moment, and all teams have no momentum and plenty of issues to deal with at the moment.
right now im predicting the final 6 to be
1 reds
2 chiefs
3 sharks
4 brumbies
5 crusaders
6 stormers/cheetahs
