Have read a lot on this forum and elsewhere about the predictable kick and chase approach of the South African teams and the need to go towards a ball in hand running approach like the NZ teams instead in an effort to play exciting rugby and embrace the "future" of the sport since the rules seem to constantly be changing to encourage that style
Interestingly enough in the past couple weeks there have been a couple articles by commentators and an opinion piece by Deans that points towards the predictable running style of the NZ teams as the reason for the Aussie teams dominance this year. Knowing the NZ teams will keep ball in hand enables them to put pressure on the breakdown and in the tackle and wait for the inevitable mistakes that will come.
A succesful team has to have the balance and ability to kick for territorial field position, run with ball and, yes, execute the kick and chase. This requires a flyhalf that can read the situation correctly and execute what is most appropriate and effective. Bulls have caught fire as M Steyn has found his groove, not only with the boot but some great offloads. Cruden also has the ability to run and kick and has the Chiefs up there in 3rd. Cooper is good with both adn has the Reds in 2nd, Brumbies have a running flyhalf (Toomua) and a kicking inside centre (Lealifano) and the Cheetahs have consistently shown the best balance of any of the SA sides all competition long and have won more games than any other so far. How much better will the Saders be with Carter back? although I think their problems go deeper as Bleyendall has not done badly.
Given this indication of how successful the balanced approach is then to me the Waratahs are the dark horse of the tournament should Berrick Barnes get healthy soon and take over the flyhalf position. They will be very difficult to beat as he would bring an aspect with the boot (both at goal - where McKibbin is just not good enough - and territorially) that Foley just does not have while also retaining a lot of the same ability with ball in hand. Big pack, attacking fullback, good (if not great) backline - all the ingredients.
