I don't want to be too critical of the squad and go too much in depth about the problems that remain in the squad but I'll give a brief summary of the clear issue in the squad.
I've said on the other thread there is no ideal fullback in the squad apart from Willie Le Roux, that's a obvious problem. Does Meyer really expect Goosen or Lambie to cover fullback? What a disaster that would be, both players are natural fly halfs, at fullback they wouldn't be able to control the game well, both are not great under the high ball and defensively it would be a problem especially for Goosen. If Willie Le Roux is somehow or another injured or is in a blood bin I would be very much concerned.
Cheslin Kolbe was a stand out player in Currie Cup, he's a brilliant counter attacking fullback who can also kick good, not bad under the high ball either. What exactly does this player have to do to earn a bok spot? The player has been completely overlooked. And don't talk this rubbish about weight being the cause of him not being in the squad. Patrick Lambie is 83KG's and Cheslin Kolbe is 85KG 's and yet Lambie is still the squad.
It would be logical to at least have Cheslin Kolbe as a back up for Le Roux.
Problem in EOYT bok squad
OK, if we look at fullback position only.
WIllie has improved his aerial skills, but is by no means brilliant, the best exponent of the high ball in SA is Bjorn Basson in my opinion, but that is if you look at aerial skills only.
However he is certainly no fullback.
Kolbe has one major problem in Meyer's eyes, and that is his size, look at Aplon, he was and is a great talent, but in Meyer's eyes too small.
We need a playmaker at 15, that is why Willie has been exciting for us regardless of his weaknesses, he can roam and join the line and understands what is needed to create space.
At Fullback I man not too concerned about having the best defender, look at Dagg, he is kak, then look at FOlau, positionally he is very poor in defence.
You have to trade off what you lose in one area to what you gain in another.
Besides that the back three hunt as a pack.
My biggest concern is the balance in defence of our back three, I really like what Hendrics brings to the party on attack, he is a brilliant finisher, but poor very average in defence and pathetic under the high ball.
I think if you are going to look at fullback you look at the combination of your back three.
We can foget about Kolbe, Meyer has made his selections and I cannot see anyone else getting in now.
The question is who do we have to fill the back three positions, what combination is the best, and who can be replacements.
The candidates are.
Habana
Hendricks
le Roux
JP Pietersen
De Allende
Lwazi Mvovo
Patrick Lambie
Johan Goosen
I don't think Meyer is going to look at adding to that list.
The back three does worry me to be honest.
Morne is not an option insofar as flyhalf play is concerned and the fact that Meyer ignored him after the Aussie test fiasco is an indication that he is out of contention. There would have to eb injuries making Le Roux, Pollard, Lambie, Goosen and even Pietersen, to get ot sthe stage where Morne would be in the mix.
In the absence of Le Roux - it is likely that Lambie or Pietersen would be brought on as a replacement.
It is highly unlikely that that number of players will eb injured on a short tour and some of the selections are passengers.

Nope I have Kolbe's weight spot on, it may show it differently on a other source because the bio wasn't updated but 85KG's is correct as it stands.

I think comparing Kolbe to Gio Aplon in terms of weight and size is pretty far off the mark. Gio Aplon has always been around 75KG's and 78KGs. Also if you look at Kolbe's upper body physique in comparison its much larger. His defence and strength more superior. The 20 year old is way more talented than him also.
Jerome, far off the mark?
I cannot disagree with you more strongly. Have you seen Aplon defend?
I have seen him knocked out by taking on big men whilst putting everything into a tackle , I have seen him make try saving tackles, He isn't that much lighter than Kolbe, I suspect he is taller than Kolbe, Their weight cannot differ more than a few KG's.
Both are extremely talented footballers.
The point is neither will make a selection under Meyer due to his obsession with size.
I think that Meyer did call Aplon up for one test - if I am not wrong it was the PE test against the Englishin 2012 - but then he did not repeat it afterwards.
Aplon is a very good player - on Super series level - but he did himself no favours when he was in the Springbok squad in 2010-11 and he ahs always had a major problem in defnese.
I like Kolbe as a hrard worker showing up all over he show - and he is excellent when he has even the smallest of spces to use. However he reminds me a lot of Brent Russell - oustanding on lower level, but never really a good enough player on Springbok level.I may be wrong - but I have a feeling that Kolbe will end up as a top 7's player.
Lambie is too small for fullback. Kolbe is a scummie and is being wasted playing fullback where he will always struggle against t op sides. The fact is 85 kg fullback have all but disappeared. But far be it for me to gainsay anyone on the subject. Give it a shot and let's see what happens. Kolbe gentlemen has yet to play through a Super Rugby season. I would like to see him doing well enough there first.
Willie is not that big either.
