At fullback we have the very impressive Fassi who looks to have star written all over him. A bit of gym work and he’ll be the finished article. Wings - we have Dyantyi and Nkosi having come from nowhere to test stars. Tambwe looked promising but has not had much game time with the Lions. Zas always had promise and looks to have come back from injury bigger and stronger. At centre Esterhuizen has come of age adding good touches to his initial instinct to crash it up. Louw of the Sharks has really impressed me at 12, looks the real deal. Young Similane of the Baby Boks and Lions looks a great prospect at 13. At 10 Willemse has been great and Libok very creative. At 9 Ivan v Zyl has provided a great service for the Bulls. The jury is out on Papier who seems to have made it to test rugby on the strength of age group reputation for I am yet to witness anything of note. At loosehead Pierre Schoeman was brilliant for the Bulls but is sadly now lost to a Scottish club. His older brother for the Sharks has been very good. At tighthead Thomas du Toit has come of age, solid in the scrums and a giant in the loose. I like the look of Kumbiria of WP and Jonker of the Lions. At hooker I like the power of Dweba of the Cheetahs - built like a brick shithouse. At lock JD Schickerling has been brilliant and I like the look of Koeklenberg of the Sharks and Stassen of the Bulls. Loosies to impress have been Kwagga making an impression in 15’s, Wiese at 7 for WP, Augustus looks promising at 8 as does Dayamani of the Lions but needs to muscle up. Tyler Paul has been good for the Sharks at 7.

Top post Saffex. What a breath of fresh air to see some real optimism around here and I can't fault any of your picks.

Yep Rooi it’s the reason I have migrated away from the site, so much negativity regarding our players and all the boring bickering. I used to be a culprit myself but it bores me now. Rassie has proved we have the talent, something we have always had but unfortunately with no one to guide them. To think that in my opinion anyway, Rassie is only getting about 60% of his selections right, imagine what we could do if he got it up closer to 100%. We have more depth in talent than ever, that talent needs to be directed by merit coaches - something Rassie is I think

Finally, more black talent has hit the scene to select from at Super Rugby and for the Boks- and not just in the wing position.
Quotas are terrible, so it is now great to be able to select from a larger resource pool - particularly now on merit alone.
Given the depth of wingers, converting a test quality player to outside centre is an option, with both Dyanti and Nkosi likely to also be able to cover outside centre.

Dyanti looks like the Bok player of the year, not just the new Bok of the year.  Apparently, he can also play outside the centre, so that may also be an option for him with the number of top quality black wingers around.
Nkosi is solid and has the physicality for test rugby. As long as he stays injury free, he will score lots of tries for the Boks. He has the power game to play to potentially play at outside center.
Fassi has skill and speed, but also looks like a player that could be count on as the last line of defence. A smart thinking player, not just a finisher that can take attacking opportunities. If he can catch international wingers with 10-metre advantage, he could provide good cover to either winger on defence.
Dayamani seems good, but should he be playing as an outside center?  He has pace, and may get more oppertunity to use it as an outside back.
Curwin Bosch is another player with potential, other than his defence. If he can bulk up and retain his pace and skill, he could be an option. At this stage, he is not strong enough to carry the ball up in contact or to tackle players in the flyhalf spot. However, he is probably the best pole kicker in SA and is really fast.

I have a bad feeling about Dayimani as an 8, and I'm not a big fan of players switching positions so I'm a bit perplexed as to whether he'll make it for the Boks.
Simelane is the one I look forward to watching, but I have a bad feeling about him moving out onto the wing to accommodate less talented players with no future getting the nod ahead of him at 13.

Shark keep an eye on the very elusive Similane at 13 for the Lions, quick and one hell of a step. Dyantyi has been amazing and I think we would have been saying the same about Nkosi had he not got injured. He is a bigger more powerful version of Dyantyi. Willemse is amazingly talented at 10, so much flair and creativity

All amazingly amazing....and yet we are at 50/50 with 6 out of 9 tests at home, one neutral. And the CC visually a romp in the park. Some folks have very low standards.

The Currie Cup, certainly the games I watched, were poor. It's like Serie C compared to Serie A. It's obviously an important step for players, but the leap they take into super rugby is enormous. From there into test rugby is almost as daunting, if not more so. We can't make so many of these rash proclamations based on so little.

Mozart and AO

You both see minimal rugby in SA and your assessments of player performances prove that.

It never hit home yet that the last year under Meyer was a disgrace and you find all kinds of excuses but never was prepared to really discovered why it happened.   Whatever you came up thus far is total and utter BS.

Now back to the CC.   Just a  question is there a difference in the quality of rugby played  in the CC in the period 2014 and 2015 compared to the quality this year.   There is substantial proof that the present season was much better than what was played in 2014 and 2015.

The cc is the feeding ground for SR - where all bar a few  will beat the NH club teams.   There are virtually no players who do not perform well on CC that do not play in the  SR series and who in the end becomes Springbok candidates.

There is a difference - unlike Meyer whose selection norms rarely contains reference to performance.   It was al about anything but - while Erasmus norm is based on performance.

Nothing wrong with the standard of the CC. Omlett and Omellette are just rubbishing the world's greatest domestic rugby competition as they do endlessly every year. Same old bleating from the rugby noobs.
The only disappointing thing for me about this year's CC was the poor crowds at some games. The rugby itself has been great as usual.
Can't wait for the Final tomorrow! Come on Sharks!!!

Beating NZ in NZ and then dominating them for 70min (subs fucked it up)at home tells me more than I need to know. The Boks will have turned the corner under Rassie after the NZ encounters.

Give it less than two years and most of these hot prospects will have bellied up.

Not an issue for SA rugby tale mill, as SA keep pushing out way too many wannabee rugby players relatively to the market, a new list will be issued.

Rinse.

Repeat.

Well it's the domestic rugby competition of a country ranked somewhere between 5 and 7.....how good could it be? And watching those early Bools tries last week, the standard was truly miles below Super Rugby ...which is itself no great shakes. What our press never mentions is NZ made some incredibly stupid mistakes in Wellington...they were careless. In South Africa Rassie completely abandoned the 'expansive rugby ' nonsense and we ran a tired NZ team close. But shouldn't we always expect to do that? Hell Coetzee lost by only 1 point against NZ last year. All this hubris is so typical.....and so premature.

Another covert attack by Mozart on Erasmus.   The negativity has its origins in the hubris  so adored by YOU - the madness called the Meyer era.

Just the facts....I think Rassie has been spot on tactically, shedding the laughable 'expansive rugby' you support, for a balanced game including tactical kicking. He has been less clear in his selections and blundered with the bench in the last test. That leaves us at 50/50....which doesn't attack Rassie just the overblown hype.

No Mozart

What you wrote above is quoted:-

"I think Rassie has been spot on tactically, shedding the laughable 'expansive rugby' you support, for a balanced game including tactical kicking. He has been less clear in his selections and blundered with the bench in the last test.

The "expansive game" I support has never been something you knew anything about.   It entails in the main using of all 15 rugby players in both defense and attack and requires variation in attacking or even defending mechanisms.   The story about kicking was also misrepresented - I believe in strategic kicking as a variation - you never understoo d the meaning of that term,  Recently you even queried whether there is anything like "aimless kicking".

After years of preaching by you to the effect that 90% of the functions of flyhalfs relate to kicking of balls and the BS we suffered under Meyer and Coetzee - Erasmus is doing exactly what I have been advocating for years and you have been opposing for years.

Still smarting about being caught out iro the replacement of Le Roux?

I hope to see Nkosi starting  next weekend. If not for his injury I think he might have been the talk of the town rather than just Dyantyi.

Mike, stop embarrassing yourself. The Boks are playing exactly the brand of rugby you said was backward doff rugby. As I showed in the stats comparison between this year and last, there is a significant drop in ball-in-hand rugby this year. All those aimless kicks, Steph at flyhalf, all that defending. No, Rassie is making a complete mockery of your devotion. I love it!

AO

If you cannot read and understand English - please do not come up with nonsense,   I never said anything about the brand of rugby that Erasmus is playing other than praising it.

The rugby I criticize that was dof was the BS we got used to under Meyer and Coetzee - which was totally different from what the team under Erasmus produces

You wrote some daydreams of the game plan of Meyer - if there indeed was one - that was never seen on the field of play in the last two years of his coaching.   What you wrote was indeed BS in buckets.

There are zero similarities between what Meyer's teams produced and the rugby played under Erasmus, Whereas I criticized both Meyer and Coetzee for having coached players to play a game plan that could not produce 15 man rugby and in the amin centers around 10 or 11 man rugby, you two cwas in all-out support of the BS dished up.   Now suddenly you two are the ones who claim you support the rugby game plan of Erasmus - something both of you were vehemently against in the past.

IT IS REALLY FUNNY TO SEE HOW DESPERATE YOU ARE TO TRY AND DISOWN THE BS YOU WROTE IN THE PAST.

You are right Tokkie.....the brand of rugby under Erasmus is totally different to Coetzee, it focusses much more on possession and territory. Just like HM. Which of course is why we pressured NZ through 60 minutes. The one thing that is better under Rassie is the push defence....harking back to it's inventor Jake White.

Are you really serious in crediting Meyer with any such game plan?  Fact is Meyer had a game plan that strictly forbid playing a ball in hand game.  He was  the one who said that the Springbok backline players do not have the skills to play such a game,   He also picked loosies some of whom were totally incapable of ball protection and recovery.

His so-called territo ry game consisted of two many aimless and possession turnover kicks and his selections from November 2014 and the EC squad was crazily based on reputation players without regard to performance,   Some of hiss elections for the WC squad did not even play rugby for up to 18 months before the WC.  Meyer himself said that reputation was the norm for his selections and the unfortunate part was that those players were incapable of playing the rugby you  describe as  equivalent to what the Springboks played this year.

No Mozart the story about defense is another issue that can be due to a vast improvement I the tackling by especially Du Toit at loosie.   Players like Louw, Vermeulen, Burger  and Alberts never made more than 10 to 12  tackles a game.  For that reason you invented the mystery term  "process tackles" in a n effort to cover up for the deficiencies of your favoured players.

What you and AO are totally silent about are the try-scoring issue, because it put pay to all the myths spread about Meyer and Coetzee coaching terms.   That on its own showed in 2018 more of a 15 man game with most of the tries actually scored by backline players.

The one topic that started sliding backwards as early as 2014 was the issue of the effective usage of driving mauls in tests. You tried to sidetrack discussion on that issue coming up with really trivial issues and OA ran for cover.  That remains the key poor element Erasmus inherited from his predecessors and he has not solved as yet.
