To settle an argument - help needed.

How did Natal gain promotion from B division to the A div.,was it back in the late 80's?

Did they gain promotion by winning a play off,or was it a board room decision from S A Rugby?

Alastair.

There were definitely promotion/relegation games in those days. The semi-final also involved the "B" Division. The winners of the A div played the second guys in the B Div, and the second teams in the A Div hot to play the winners of the B Div. The promo/relegation games was then between the last team on the A Div log and the winners of the B Div as well. I can clearly remember when WP scarped through in a semi-final against Wynand Claassen's B Div Natal side and IIRC, that was the year that Natal got promoted to the A Div by beating N OFS in the promo/relegation games.

There was also a next tier competition, called the Sport Pienaar Competition. That was the one where many of the old sub-unions used to play in as well. Those were teams like South Eastern Transvaal (the current day Pumas, who used to be a N Tvl sub-union), Stellaland, Lowfeld (who became a South Eastern sub-union when the South East became and independent union), etc.
